Historia
Empathy is in short supply. We struggle to understand people who aren’t like us, but find it easy to hate them. Studies show that we are less caring than we were even 30 years ago. In 2006, Barack Obama said that the United States was suffering from an “empathy deficit.” Since then, things seem to have only gotten worse. In this groundbreaking book, Jamil Zaki shares cutting-edge research, including experiments from his own lab, showing that empathy is not a fixed trait - something we’re born with or not - but rather a skill that can be strengthened through effort.

It’s fine.

This book has more chaff than wheat. There are some interesting acknowledgments of other people’s research that I am grateful for but so much of this book will be forgotten. Narration was decent. Always nice to hear from the author.

Historia
lf a man cannot stand freedom, he will probably turn fascist. This, in the fewest possible words, is the essential argument in this modem classic, Escape from Freedom. The author, Erich Fromm, is a distinguished psychologist, late of Berlin and Heidelberg, now of New York City.

A stirring treatise for understanding “the way it is” and how to possibly defy it.
Revisado: 09-11-23
Escape from Freedom is a classic text written at time when the threat of fascist nation states was visceral and very real. The threat today is different but the ideas expressed in this book are relatable and cogent.
Odds are good you’ll finish this and wonder why you haven’t read this before and what can you do to better express your individuality. Please read it. You won’t regret it.

Historia
A groundbreaking book about personal growth that presents a uniquely effective set of five tools that bring about dynamic change. The Tools offers a solution to the biggest complaint patients have about therapy: the interminable wait for change to begin. The traditional therapeutic model sets its sights on the past, but Phil Stutz and Barry Michels employ an arsenal of techniques - "the tools" - that allow patients to use their problems as levers that access the power of the unconscious and propel them into action.

It worked for me
Revisado: 03-01-23
I’ve read this book and listened to the audiobook several times and I can affirm that it has been useful.
At the time of my first reading I had started therapy and was seeing my therapist for a couple of years by then. My therapist did not recommend the book but I found it complemented what I was working on at the time. I have since changed careers, invested in loving relationship, and overall feel happier.
All of that to say, it’s a short book that offers practical tools most people can pick up and use right away. It alone probably will not “fix” your problems but if you’re serious about changing how you live and relate with others, why not try it?
And to the people who offer negative reviews, I hope you found the resources that gave you the support you needed.

I enjoyed this audiobook but I think to benefit from its advice you need to read the book & write your notes about it. Good entry point though.

Historia
By the time he was 27 years old, Kwame Onwuachi had opened - and closed - one of the most talked-about restaurants in America. He had launched his own catering company with $20,000 that he made from selling candy on the subway, yet he’d been told he would never make it on television because his cooking wasn’t “Southern” enough. In this inspiring memoir about the intersection of race, fame, and food, he shares the remarkable story of his culinary coming-of-age.

Excellent book for fans of celebrity chefs, cooking shows, and foodies. The fact that Kwame narrated made the telling all the more authentic.
