Historia
Werner Herzog was born in September 1942 in Munich, Germany, at a turning point in the Second World War. Soon Germany would be defeated and a new world would have to be made out the rubble and horrors of the war. Fleeing the Allied bombing raids, Herzog’s mother took him and his older brother to a remote, rustic part of Bavaria where he would spend much of his childhood hungry, without running water, in deep poverty. It was there, as the new postwar order was emerging, that one of the most visionary filmmakers of the next seven decades was formed.

Living by walking, reading, recording for others
Revisado: 01-11-24
Long ago I saw Herzog’s movie about Kaspar Hauser which has never left me.
When I saw this title, Every Man for Himself God Against All, that story came rushing back and I had to listen to Herzog’s own telling of his nomadic life of observation. That he knew Bruce Chatwin, another nomad, so well, and whose Songlines meant so much to me, it occurred I maybe “missed my calling”!
This is read almost as a stream of consciousness. How beautiful it is to be given this gift of vicariously walking alongside a life apart, a life headlong, both with this book and the films. Worthy, metaphoric, fascinating, unintentionally intimidating!

Historia
Some people's lives are entirely their own creations. James Rebanks' isn't. He's the first son of a shepherd who was the first son of a shepherd himself; his family have lived and worked in the Lake District of Northern England for generations, further back than recorded history. It's a part of the world known mainly for its romantic descriptions by Wordsworth and the much-loved illustrated children's books of Beatrix Potter. But James' world is quite different. His way of life is ordered by the seasons and the work they demand.

Thank you for a perfectly read insight into a shepherd’s life revealing the intimate and intelligent bond between humans, sheep, dogs, and seasons.

Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Endless Dialogue
Revisado: 07-20-22
Of course we women easily identify with a strong female heroine. This story is written as if it’s a stage play so it is not surprising that it is being made into a series for tv which will suit it especially if the humor is there. The fatigue of endless dialogue (a script) and zero beautiful writing makes me run immediately to the likes of Tolstoy or Proust, Cather or Allende or Marquez just for the relief of expressive thought and descriptive poetic prose over talk talk talk, endless dialogue.

Historia
One of Jane Austen’s most beloved works, Pride and Prejudice, is vividly brought to life by Academy Award nominee Rosamund Pike ( Gone Girl). In her bright and energetic performance of this British classic, she expertly captures Austen’s signature wit and tone. Her attention to detail, her literary background, and her performance in the 2005 feature film version of the novel provide the perfect foundation from which to convey the story of Elizabeth Bennet, her four sisters, and the inimitable Mr. Darcy.

Austen’s humor is missing in this reading.
Revisado: 07-20-21
Sadly the very key to Jane Austen’s work, her subtle and persistent humor, is nowhere to be found in Pike’s reading.
