Historia
Learn Spanish curse words when Michael has a lively discussion with a couple of loose-lipped party goers who drop a wide range of Spanish swear words at each other. Afterward, we have a fun time translating some of the more colorful Mexican Spanish expressions from the dialogue and Paulina helps us distinguish the mild Spanish curses from the more vulgar ones.

I’ve got both sets of these conversations, two years. I’ve listen to all of them. I have listened to many Spanish language lessons, but these really are the best if you’re at a low, intermediate or intermediate level. They are so well produced, too. Hats off to the producers.

A very enjoyable and sobering tail of the media landscape in New York in the 2010s.
Revisado: 07-02-23
Having spent my career in New York City during this exact same time. I really enjoyed hearing the backstory of numerous media institutions that I both admired and reviled. We all know the ultimate outcome, which is probably what should have happened. Although they had garnered for themselves, a small amount of credibility through Ben Smith’s BuzzFeed news, for the most part, these institutions, gawker, BuzzFeed, and the rest were lame and harmful. They played on many of our worst instincts and monetized them. I admire Ben Smith and Jonah, but I’m glad that they’re ilk finally got their comeuppance.

Historia
Little more than a century ago, the southern coast of California - bone-dry, harbor-less, isolated by deserts and mountain ranges - seemed destined to remain scrappy farmland. Then, as if overnight, one of the world’s iconic cities emerged. At the heart of Los Angeles’ meteoric rise were three flawed visionaries: William Mulholland, an immigrant ditch-digger turned self-taught engineer; D.W. Griffith, who transformed the motion picture from a vaudeville-house novelty into a cornerstone of American culture; and Aimee Semple McPherson, a charismatic evangelist.

Must read for any Los Angeleno
Revisado: 09-26-18
The history of Los Angeles is told in this book through the lives of three larger than life characters. William Mulholland, D.W. Griffith and Aimee Semple McPherson, who helped made the city what it is. One of the great books of all time that tells the Mulholland story is Cadillac Desert by the late Marc Reiser. This audiobook tells the creation story of Los Angeles through the lives of Mulholland, Griffith and Aimee Semple McPherson, the tireless, and widely popular (at the time) Canadian-American Pentecostal evangelist who, Krist argues, gave birth to the spiritual side of the city, helping create the notion of LA as a place of spiritual awakening and fulfillment. The audiobook is an easy listen, the narrator has a very even but charismatic voice. The audiobook is strewn with fascinating details about how Los Angeles grew from the 35th largest city in the early 20th century to the second largest by the 1950s. It's a really interesting and enjoyable listen. Highly recommended.

Historia
Regarded as a masterpiece today, 2001: A Space Odyssey received mixed reviews. Despite the success of Dr. Strangelove, director Stanley Kubrick wasn't yet recognized as a great filmmaker, and 2001 was radically innovative, with little dialogue and no strong central character. Author Michael Benson explains how 2001 was made, telling the story primarily through the two people most responsible for the film, Kubrick and science fiction legend Arthur C. Clarke. Benson interviewed Clarke many times, and has also spoken at length with Kubrick's widow, Christiane.

A thorough and deeply enjoyable story about the making of an epic film
Revisado: 08-17-18
Younger people have little idea how impactful the film 2001: A Space Odyssey was when it first came out. It inspired a whole generation of filmmakers, including major names like Steven Spielberg, George Lucas and James Cameron. The film is visually sumptuous, employing cutting edge special effects, many of which were pioneered by Stanley Kubrick and his team. This book is a wonderful romp through the making of the epic, revolutionary film. It provides so much wonderful detail about Kubrick's obsessiveness, his attention to factual detail and his often-times tyrannical style of directing. I loved every second of it, and went back right after finishing it to watch the film again. Doing so right after reading the book opened my eyes to many details I had missed the first (and second and third) time around watching it. I confess I even learned a lot more about the plot, which was very confusing to me at times. It's an excellent summer read.

Historia
Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859) was an intrepid explorer and the most famous scientist of his age. His restless life was packed with adventure and discovery, whether climbing the highest volcanoes in the world or racing through anthrax-infested Siberia. He came up with a radical vision of nature, that it was a complex and interconnected global force and did not exist for man's use alone. Ironically, his ideas have become so accepted and widespread that he has been nearly forgotten.

Excellent look at a somewhat forgotten but immensely important historical figure in science.
Revisado: 04-02-18
I’ve always been a fan of Alexander von Humboldt, but until now I had not read a biography quite as entertaining and current as this one. It did a magnificent job making Humboldts achievements relevant too many issues we face today, while also satisfyingly covering his incredibly adventuresome and important life. I particularly liked the chapters on his influence on Darwin, Bolivar, Ernst Haeckel and Muir. I was never bored.
