Ariana captures your imagination from the very first page. I could probably claim that I was entranced by the memoir of her Czech-born father because she is nearly my same age and she too was born in Venezuela, and my mother also was an immigrant. But that would be oversimplifying things.

She is a gifted storyteller and a committed researcher that didn’t let time or space get in the way of her goal to tell her father’s story and bring us along for the ride, as she was able to get to know him and understand him better in the process. This is, without a doubt my favorite read this year!

First Lady Michelle Obama speaks like a person. Like a friend. Like a mother and a daughter. Like a partner and a professional. She teaches but she’s not preachy. She shows, she doesn’t just tell. I enjoyed every moment of this book, and treasure the lessons it leaves me with.

I first listened to Nick Cave through one of his songs included in the soundtrack of Wim Wenders’ “Until The End of The World”. Years later, he popped up again in a movie during a beautiful scene in one of the Harry Potter movie that featured his song “Children”. In 2021, I stumbled upon his 2019 album “Ghosteen”, the first one he recorded after the death of his son, Arthur, and I was pulled deep into the rabbit hole of his work.

This book provides a unique perspective of his work against the background of his view of life, religion, pain, redemption… you cannot read (or listen to) this book, and remain indifferent. He stands firmly yet humbly as a sage, and someone that is not afraid to show his flaws and mistakes. Written in an interview format, it feels more like a conversation between friends. An instant all-time favorite, that I will reread again.

The best read and produced audiobook I’ve read in a long time

This is not just for the U2 fan, although those of us who have followed the band since their beginnings will find it amazing! The fact that Bono himself reads it, of course, is a big part of why the audiobook is fantastic. However, it’s packed with sound effects and song moments that accentuate the story. At times, it feels more like an audio version of a Netflix documentary than an audiobook.

P.S. like a little Easter egg, I recommend you listen through the very end… you will be delighted like Sting delighted us at the end one of his songs in the 90s with a “good night!”

Otro extraordinario libro de Juan Gabriel Vásquez. Lo escuché, narrado por John Alex Toro, y al igual que “El Ruido de las Cosas al Caer” lo disfruté profundamente.

I couldn’t get past a few pages… at least I can say the audiobook format doesn’t work here, even though Jerry himself is reading it. Or maybe it’s just not funny to read/hear stand alone jokes in the form of chapters of a book. Either way, after about ten jokes, I gave up on it.

While the start of the book was lengthy, once I entered the chapters that covered the steps, the book felt very actionable and shed precious light on difficult areas as you go through the journey of uncoupling from someone you never imagined life without.

It's remarkable to read this book and find the words in it resonate so strongly, considering how long ago it was written. This can be a quick read, but do not underestimate it's depth and potential to drive us to a more fulfilling life.

This is a book about the life and last few years of Paul Kalanithi, an incredible neurosurgeon that succumbed to lung cancer. His journey is painfully beautiful, inspiring, leaving you with a mix of joy and sadness. I couldn't have listened to this title last year, when my mother passed. But I was ready to take it all in now, and feel thankful I took the plunge and enjoyed every moment of it.
