Historia
The year is 1920: Flying in the face of convention, legendary American adventuress Beryl Helliwell never fails to surprise and shock. The last thing her adoring public would expect is that she craves some peace and quiet. The humdrum hamlet of Walmsley Parva in the English countryside seems just the ticket. And, honestly, until America comes to its senses and repeals Prohibition, Beryl has no intention of returning stateside and subjecting herself to bathtub gin.

Disappointed
Revisado: 02-11-19
I usually like cozy mysteries. Not this one. I found this book boring on many levels. I did not find the main characters engaging, I had a hard time caring about them; the side characters were not interesting either. The story was very predictable, the murder motive made little sense to me. Barbara Rosenblat is one of my all time favorite narrators, but she seemed bored herself reading this book. There was hardly any difference in the voices (and she can do voices!), and the whole narration felt flat.

Historia
Germany, 1660: When a dying boy is pulled from the river with a mark crudely tattooed on his shoulder, hangman Jakob Kuisl is called upon to investigate whether witchcraft is at play in his small Bavarian town. Whispers and dark memories of witch trials and the women burned at the stake just seventy years earlier still haunt the streets of Schongau.

Could not get past the disturbing aspects of this
Revisado: 03-22-16
What would have made The Hangman's Daughter better?
Nothing. I found the idea of making the hangman the 'good guy' quite revolting. And the interview with the author, talking about his ancestor, and kind of glorifying him, even more disturbing. Could not get past that.
Has The Hangman's Daughter turned you off from other books in this genre?
No, just this author.
Which scene was your favorite?
None
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Disturbing.

Historia
For those looking for the real story behind the fictionalized movie account of the 47 Ronin story, this is the definitive, fascinating account of this unforgettable tale of a band of samurai who defied the Emperor to avenge the disgrace and death of their master, and faced certain death as a result. It led to one of the bloodiest episodes in Japanese history, and in the process, created a new set of heroes in Japan.

Interesting story - performance not so much
Revisado: 10-05-15
What did you love best about 47 Ronin?
An interesting look into one of the important stories of Japan culture, of which I am quite ignorant.
Would you be willing to try another one of David Shih’s performances?
No. I found his breathing so intrusive as to make it difficult to follow the story.
Who was the most memorable character of 47 Ronin and why?
The main character (no idea how to write his name), i.e. the samurai in charge of the group.
Any additional comments?
This book has awakened enough interest that I will read a history of Japan. I find their culture difficult to understand, and fascinating.

Historia
Georges Simenon's gripping tale of small town suspicion and revenge, part of the new Maigret series. There was an exaggerated humility about her. Her cowed eyes, her way of gliding noiselessly about without bumping into things, of quivering nervously at the slightest word, were the very image of a scullery maid accustomed to hardship. And yet he sensed, beneath that image, glints of pride held firmly in check. She was anaemic. Her flat chest was not formed to rouse desire.

Delighted to finally get Maigret audiobooks!
Revisado: 03-21-14
What did you love best about The Yellow Dog?
In this early story, we already see Maigret unique personality. And his approach to solving crimes by observing and understanding people's personalities. Quite different than the usual mysteries.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
Yes. I had not read this particular Maigret book, so I did not know the story in advance, as with other books. Nothing is what it seems, and people are revealed to be very different than what they appear.
Have you listened to any of Gareth Armstrong’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Yes, I have all his Maigret books, and will buy more as they come available. He is a bit dry, but does get the personality across.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
No, but I love reading Maigret stories, it is like meeting an old friend.

Young Lerris is dissatisfied with his life and trade, and yearns to find a place in the world better suited to his skills and temperament. But in Recluce a change in circumstances means taking one of two options: permanent exile from Recluce or braving the dangergeld, a complex, rule-laden wanderjahr in the lands beyond Recluce, with the aim of learning how the world works and what his place in it might be. Many do not survive. Lerris chooses the dangergeld.

Intriguing concept, badly developed
Revisado: 02-04-14
Would you try another book from L. E. Modesitt Jr. and/or Kirby Heyborne?
Will not try any L.E. Modesitt Jr. at this time. Kirby Heyborne is fine.
What was most disappointing about L. E. Modesitt Jr.’s story?
The main character is annoying. The continuous whining! Many times during the novel I felt - to use a Robert Jordan expression - like boxing his ears.
The story should have been written as a novelette. How many times do we need to know that Lerris's stomach is rumbling? How did the repetitive trivial details help create the world? Not at all, as far as I could tell.
The Sound effects! Even more annoying than the main character. The noise of the horse hooves made me think of the Monty Python Coconuts.
Did Kirby Heyborne do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
He is not a stellar performer, but he was adequate. Many people seem to blame him for the distracting sound effects, but he is just reading the text.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
I found the underlying concept very intriguing, chaos vs. order. This is why I listened to the book to the end. I kept hoping the concepts would be developed better.
Any additional comments?
I wanted to like this book, but I could not. Maybe one day I will try one of the other stories in the series, to see if indeed the author develops his concepts better.

Historia
When world-class biblical scholar Bart Ehrman first began to study the texts of the Bible in their original languages he was startled to discover the multitude of mistakes and intentional alterations that had been made by earlier translators. In Misquoting Jesus, Ehrman tells the story behind the mistakes and changes that ancient scribes made to the New Testament and shows the great impact they had upon the Bible we use today.

More of a reference book
Revisado: 07-09-13
What would have made Misquoting Jesus better?
Nothing really. The reader did its best, but the book is more suited for reading than listening to. Although I'm interested in the subject, it just put me to sleep (literally, I fell asleep listening to it)
Has Misquoting Jesus turned you off from other books in this genre?
No, I will probably look for similar books, just a bit less dry. I'm interested in the subject. Karen Armstrong, for instance, is a better writer.
Which scene was your favorite?
The only part that was really interesting was the introduction, where the author explained how he got interested in the research. As someone else noted, it would have helped if he had given some more information about his personal journey, maybe at the end, but also throughout the book.
What character would you cut from Misquoting Jesus?
This is not a book with characters.
Any additional comments?
This is probably and excellent reference book.
