The authenticity and honesty of her recollections brought back 100 memories that sent me to Google to look up snippets of watching her with Sonny during my childhood- singing I Got You Babe, later on the Sonny & Cher show, her solo music, career and brief marriage to Greg Allman, fabulous outfits designed by Bob Mackie, and more. I really like how the woman who reads some of the chapters has a voice similar to Cher’s and as they trade off back-and-forth, it was seamless. No nasty revelations here - just truth without skipping over hard details. Definitely worth the read.

Sean Penn did a great job reading Bob Dylan's memoir; sounding much like I'd imagine Dylan's low key expression. However, I wish it had been the unabridged version, so I can accurately review. Several things seem cut short but wasn't sure whether that was the abridgement or if he intentionally left things out or cut them short. That being said, I very much enjoyed what I heard. This was no tattletail memoir, but a wholely respectful one, in my view. Really clarified how he suffered through fame and then everyone wanting him to be their warrior. I concluded that the incredibly important and poetic music he gave us was enough. Was impressed how he spoke of and respected his family of origin and fought hard to stay on his own course. It's amazing he made it out alive. Seriously - what pressure that man went through just to be himself.

Ina Garten goes deep in this whole-hearted memoir that includes fabulous stories about her work, her background, and her marriage. I've always loved her food and shows, but now I feel like I know the woman. This book is honest, smart, funny, poignant, and a joy to experience. Her reading is superb.

Elizabeth Strout has worked her magic once again through telling slow, interwoven stories about everyday people living lives that reveal fundamental truths of humanity. This immensely brilliant tale involves familiar and beloved characters who live in various towns in rural Maine. Bob Burgess, Lucy Barton, Olive Kittridge, and others share their day-to-day wonder, struggles, heartbreaks, and desires - every single thing it means to be alive. The result is deeply moving and feels like gold. She catches the reader off guard with her unique signature pacing and respect for her characters. I am profoundly enriched every time I read one of her brilliant novels.

Beautiful & Entertaining Memoir of a Hollywood Dynasty

I have loved actor, producer, director, Griffin Dunne since I first saw him as the lead in the 1980s movie, After Hours - which I consider to be one of the most smart & brilliant comedies of all time. He has somehow gathered the stories of his renowned and complex Hollywood family and melded them lovingly into a beautiful, wildly-entertaining, sometimes tragic - but hopeful memoir. Rather than exploiting unrelated details of his famous family’s lives (Aunt Joan Didion, father, Dominic Dunne, and sister Dominique (tragically, murdered by a boyfriend), he includes only that which is relevant and intersects with his life. Same with his BFF Carrie Fisher. I couldn’t put it down. Treat yourself to this rare find, thankfully, read by the author.

EXXXXCELLENT - This book is right up there with Trevor Noah’s “Born a Crime” in terms of hilarity, vulnerability, honesty, and wisdom. Leslie recounts her life, loves, and lessons in her own words - not read. It’s like having a conversation with a best friend and when she laughs, you will get a hit of endorphins like nothing else. There is not an ounce of bullshit in this book. I f*cking loved Leslie F*cking Jones before I read this book but now, I love her even more. This book does not disappoint. What a talent who is still not done with us.

I finished the author’s remarkable ‘A Covenant of Water’ last month, and - hungry for more - delved into this book to discover another amazing saga. I am so picky about my fiction, but this author is a master at weaving heartfelt and authentic stories within historical events. Verghese is a modern day Scheherazade.

Engrossing Coming of Age memoir set in the Florida orange groves of the 1960s. Saturated with the hard work and sweet aroma of orange blossoms and the hard work it takes to grow them. Read by the Pulitzer prize winning author, I found the story to be greatly relatable and nostalgic, beautifully told, yet does not shy away from any family shadowlands.

Perfect, Important American Story

Black author James McBride captures beautifully the story of his being raised by his white mother, Ruth McBride Jordan, whom he later learned was Jewish and a victim of racism herself. This is a story of how Ruth parented twelve loving and successful children with quiet strength and faith - even after each of her two soulful, dedicated, and strong black husbands unexpectedly passed on. "God is the color of water," she tells the author as a little boy. It is the most inspirational of American stories.
