Of course the Lord of the Rings is perfect.
The narration of by Andy Serkis, is likewise incredible. While very different from Rob Inglis, they both have wonderful strengths. If you want stately and delightful, I would say Rob Inglis. If you want exciting and dramatic, go with Andy Serkis. Both excellent.

Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn famously said that one of the biggest mistakes people make is assuming totalitarianism can't happen in their country. Many American Christians are making that mistake today, sleepwalking through the erosion of our freedoms. Live Not by Lies will wake them and equip them for the long resistance.

Great encouragement and food for thought for the modern Christian. The stories of dissidents are humbling. The last chapter ties it all together well.

At the heart of our current moment lies a universal yearning, writes David Zahl, not to be happy or respected so much as enough - what religions call "righteous." To fill the void left by religion, we look to all sorts of everyday activities - from eating and parenting to dating and voting - for the identity, purpose, and meaning once provided on Sunday morning.

Historia
From influential British historian A. J. P. Taylor comes the audio edition of The Origins of the Second World War. Controversial for its thesis that Hitler was an opportunist with no thorough plan, The Origins of the Second World War is an extensive exploration of the international politics and foreign policy that led up to the one of the bloodiest conflicts of the 20th century.

Dense but very enlightening
Revisado: 08-07-21
This book is not so much a point by point narrative, but much more interpretation and explanation. It assumes you are already familiar with the basic knowledge of prewar years and the actual event of World War 2. But it is quite fascinating if you do.
Taylor sets out his thesis at the beginning. To simply blame all of World War 2 on Hitler’s grand plan is far too simple. Hitler was evil certainly, but he was an evil opportunist and gambler more than a grand strategist. There were many mistakes by all the other nations along the way. And when war did come, it was probably not what hitler actually wanted. It also shows the complexity of alliances that existed in the late 1930s. Italy and Germany were not as in lock step as we might assume looking back. And Britain and France often had divergent goals.
If you want to dig deeper into the complexities of the events than a simple “this side vs that side”, you will enjoy the book.
Also, Not sure why people saw as an American you will dislike this book. America hardly comes up at all. It is much more indicting of France and England.
The narrator does sound a little condescending, but that fits the flavor of the book pretty well and I grew to enjoy it.

Historia
The First World War is one of history’s greatest tragedies. In this remarkable and intimate account, author G. J. Meyer draws on exhaustive research to bring to life the story of how the Great War reduced Europe’s mightiest empires to rubble, killed 20 million people, and cracked the foundations of the world we live in today. World War I is unique in the number of questions about it that remain unsettled. After more than 90 years, scholars remain divided on these questions, and it seems likely that they always will.

Brilliant Summary
Revisado: 02-11-18
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Any friend interested in hIstory certainly. Meyer does a very good job of telling a narrative, focusing on characters, and making a compelling story. He also is able to navigate a very complicating story in an understandable way. His chapters on background make little prior knowledge of the conflict necessary, and add a great amount of depth to the story.
What other book might you compare A World Undone to and why?
I started listening to this after listening to the Guns of August by Barbara Tuchman. This was an excellent way to continue the interest in the topic.
Have you listened to any of Robin Sachs’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I have not listen to his other performances, but I would listen to him again. At first I was worried he had a dry voice, but he does an excellent job, and after 20+ hours I was not tired of listening to him.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The whole book is a sad story. It was tragic to see how self destructive the Germans were, especially under Erich Ludendorff, whom I knew nothing about before this book. The other tragedy seems to be that everyone in this war constantly learned the wrong lessons. And how their decisions doomed the end of their world, and turbulence for the rest of the century.
Any additional comments?
9/10, would listen to again!

Historia
In this Pulitzer Prize-winning classic, historian Barbara Tuchman brings to life the people and events that led up to World War I. This was the last gasp of the Gilded Age, of Kings and Kaisers and Czars, of pointed or plumed hats, colored uniforms, and all the pomp and romance that went along with war. How quickly it all changed...and how horrible it became.

I didn’t want the story telling to stop. Very powerful performance and writing. Will be listening again.
Also if you want more, I recommend “the World Unmade”. Also very good and goes through the whole war.
I am looking for a good recommendation of the interwar period if anyone can help with that!
