Historia

Revisado: 12-09-23

Historia
The quest to understand the mind has motivated some of history's most profound thinkers. But only in our own time are we beginning to see the true complexity of this quest, as today's philosophers draw on the latest evidence from neuroscience, psychology, artificial intelligence, linguistics, and other fields to probe deeply into the inner workings of the mind.

Very good presentation.
Revisado: 06-08-23
Some parts are just discussed in a superficial way, but this is understandable considering the complexity of such a vast subject. The depth of parts of the presentation will need to be listened to again. I will listen to this again, but now taking notes and a review of the PDF documents.

Historia
What is love? It's more scientific than you think. Through 10 lectures, Dr. Wind Goodfriend surveys the biology of interpersonal attraction, sexual preference and desire, and conflict resolution. You'll look at a variety of romantic notions, common myths, and love stereotypes through the lens of science in order to break them down and better set expectations when it comes to keeping a long-term relationship happy and healthy. You'll apply biology, psychology, and anthropology to that "spark" we feel when we are attracted to someone, to better understand what that feeling is.

Excellent review! Quite well researched and presented.
Revisado: 05-20-23
This was a excellent review with good supportive references to formal studies from the biochemical/hormonal level to then support the behavioral studies and observations of people falling in love through those couples in relationships lasting decades and also presenting date of those relationships that end in failure. She even includes good data on the topic of domestic violence.
The narrator gets 4.5 stars, but this is irrelevant to the fact that the author’s skill to deliver her knowledge and expertise in 5 star book.
Very highly recommended.

Excellent. Well structured and without excessive medical jargon. Just enough to understand.

She did a great in presenting this topic to the lay reader and still kept it a level that medical students will appreciate.
Also, good narrative voice.

How did Fidel Castro fool the CIA for a generation? Why did Neville Chamberlain think he could trust Adolf Hitler? Why are campus sexual assaults on the rise? Do television sitcoms teach us something about the way we relate to each other that isn't true? While tackling these questions, Malcolm Gladwell was not solely writing a book for the page. He was also producing for the ear. In the audiobook version of Talking to Strangers, you’ll hear the voices of people he interviewed - scientists, criminologists, military psychologists.

Misleading title & terribly distracting background music / weird sounds
Revisado: 11-21-19
The book title is misleading.
This is a hodgepodge of partial narratives of some crimes, of pedofilia, of depression and suicide, of terrorist interrogations, of police interventions, etc.
These narratives are not even in the form of short stories.
The author tries to interpret (or invent) a common element from the cases he describes: talking to the people (strangers) in these narratives. The cases are so different from each other that, at best, there may be a weak trace of a line connecting a couple of the cases, like police violence.
When I finished the audiobook my wife asked if I was angry for some reason. I realized that while listening to the audiobook I was working hard to focus on the narrative because there were odd pauses, some background music and strange sounds. The effort to avoid distractions caused a buildup of unnecessary tension. The volume of music and sounds was, at times, so low that I thought it was a sound coming from somewhere else. I had my ear buds in place, and removing the earbuds confirmed these sounds and musical tones were part of the audiobook.
It is obvious that the narrator is a well prepared professional, so why do the audiobook editors ruin the performance by adding backgrounds music and odd sounds?
Think about this: when we are in a conversation with someone, we usually try to avoid distracting background sounds, voices & music. It’s not common for there to be background music during the dialog of a theatrical play, a movie or even a newscast.
On the other hand, a musical play needs the music for the songs, but when there are snippets of dialog in the musical... the music stops.
The editors forget that the most important part of the audiobook is the performance. Please do not ruin a good professional performance of an audiobook by adding background music or other sounds.
A poor narrative performance can ruin an excellent story and a mediocre story is improved by a good performance.
An “enhanced” audiobook should only be enhanced by having more voice actors playing the different characters of the story and some music when it is appropriate for the story.
What choice of music would be appropriate for this book: none. No music. No background sounds.
Other books by Mr. Gladwell are much better than this one.
I do not recommend this book.

Historia
Mitza Maric has always been a little different from other girls. Most 20-year-olds are wives by now, not studying physics at an elite Zurich university with only male students trying to outdo her clever calculations. But Mitza is smart enough to know that, for her, math is an easier path than marriage. And then fellow student Albert Einstein takes an interest in her, and the world turns sideways. Theirs becomes a partnership of the mind and of the heart, but there might not be room for more than one genius in a marriage.

Excellent!
Revisado: 10-09-19
Well written.
Excellent layout of the parts of a novel.
Easy read (no theoretical physics and very few German words).
The focus of the book is well maintained throughout: a story based on the correspondence between Albert Einstein and his first wife, Mileva Maric and other factual information from their lives.
The author notes clarify the sections where her creativity was used to facilitate a smooth flow of the story.
The narrator voice is excellent for this novel. It is evident that she has a professionally trained voice. Her oral grammar is quite good and she avoids excessive modulation and emotional overtones. This allows the reader to keep a focus on the characters, not on the voice.
I truly enjoyed this audiobook. It will now go on my list of “second reads.”

Heavy with anecdotal material and the voice performance varied from quasi-emotional tones to a dull slow down.
Revisado: 07-01-18
Overall, the book was dull and the voice performance did not help.
The title suggests that at some point there will be some reasonable evidence that supports the reason why Buddhism is True. This was not clearly presented. The author appears to be aware of the deficiencies and attempts to justify the title in the last section.
The book is heavy loaded with personal anecdotes, many of which are not related to the title.
The voice performance was mediocre. In addition to what I mentioned in the title of this review. MY MOM mind wandered off because of the slow reading.

Historia
Early studies of the human brain used a simple method: Wait for misfortune to strike - strokes, seizures, infectious diseases, horrendous accidents - and see how victims coped. In many cases their survival was miraculous, if puzzling. Observers were amazed by the transformations that took place when different parts of the brain were destroyed, altering victims' personalities. With the lucid, masterful explanations and razor-sharp wit his fans have come to expect, Kean explores the brain's secret passageways.
