Historia
Stripped of armor, might, and memory, the legendary Forerunner warrior known as the Didact was torn from the physical world following his destructive confrontation with the Master Chief and sent reeling into the mysterious depths of a seemingly endless desert wasteland. This once powerful and terrifying figure is now a shadow of his former self—gaunt, broken, desiccated, and alone. But this wasteland is not as barren as it seems. A blue light glints from a thin spire in the far distance.

Another win for Kelly Gay. I wish they wouldn't have mentioned that awful comic, but oh well, the book was good

Halo's Dune
Revisado: 12-17-23
I hated this book as a kid, but now as an adult I realize what a masterpiece it is. I recommend rereading it if you didn't like it in your youth.

Historia
One hundred thousand years ago, the galaxy was populated by a great variety of beings. But one species - eons beyond all others in both technology and knowledge - achieved dominance. They ruled in peace but met opposition with quick and brutal effectiveness. They were the Forerunners - the keepers of the Mantle of Responsibility, the next stage of life in the Universe’s Living Time. And then they vanished. This is their story.

One of the best Halo books
Revisado: 05-23-23
The Forerunner novels are basically Halo's Dune. They and Halo 4 were such a bright start to the reclaimer era. Sadly, 343 whiffed it with Halo 5, but at least this trilogy is still good

Good writing, but the story is lacking
Revisado: 01-26-23
Kelly Gay did a great job with the writing, as always. Though sadly her writing was wasted on what felt like a story being hamstrung by overall story direction from 343. It felt like every chapter had redacted information because 343 doesn't want to e.g. reveal the fate of certain characters. The end result was that not a lot happened in this book that was unique from the situations in the audio logs of Halo Infinite. This book probably should have been a tie in that released before the game, because it didn't tell us anything new other than that the team was able to send a message, and the last line of the book was written as if it was there to build hype for the game release.
That said, the author did a great job with what she was able to write about. The characters were all well written and no one had any obnoxious gimmicks — unlike most sci-fi characters these days. The events of the book are definitely more interesting than what happened in the campaign of Infinite. I kept thinking "wow this is so cool, I wish it had been in the game." Maybe she should be hired to write the campaign stories.
I'm glad she's moving back to the expanded universe with her next book because it feels like she was being stifled by 343's game writers and the overall dysfunction in Halo Infinite's story.

Historia
Obi-Wan Kenobi has not been apprenticed long to Qui-Gon Jinn, and he is chafing at Qui-Gon's training style: all meditation, no action. Obi-Wan yearns to prove himself on a mission, but when he and Qui-Gon are finally set to leave on an assignment, Qui-Gon is nowhere to be found. Angered by his master's abandonment, Obi-Wan sets out on the mission alone, determined to prove himself. On a mysterious planet he encounters a pack of feral, Force-wielding teens who seem to be the planet's only inhabitants.

Obviously a YA novel but still good
Revisado: 11-27-22
There were a few corny and cliche moments, but it's important to remember that this book was written for 11-18y/os. I think the fact that I, a grown man, was entertained despite those corny moments speaks to this book's strengths.
It definitely reminded me a lot of high school. It was also really nice to see where obi-wan met a certain character for the first time. And the book tidied up at the end to close off any questions about why certain things never appear in the lore again.

Needs dynamic range compression
Revisado: 03-14-21
This book is amazing, the music is amazing, the performance is amazing. All that said, this book has the same issue that every Star Wars book has where it's impossible to listen to in the car.
The alien and bad guy voices are much louder than the narration and sometimes the narration is just above a whisper. It's really good for immersion but it means you can't listen in a car which is where I do most of my listening. If I turn it up enough for the narrator than the voices blow out my eardrums. If I turn it down enough for the voices to be confident then I can't hear the narrator.
Either audible needs to add a way to compress the dynamic range or the books need to be normalized more during mastering.

Revisado: 03-19-19
Couldn't even get through the first chapter. I'll just have to read the book and return the audiobook. The story was good for what I've read so far. Don't skip the book, just skip the audiobook.
