A Modern Greek Tragedy
Revisado: 03-20-25
You know how the book ends. You read it anyway.
Suzanne Collins has done something incredible with these prequels. Heartbreaking, true to the tone of the original series, but with a more mature writer at their backs. Better, she’s still got something to say. If you worried these were going to be soulless cash grabs (a fair concern), don’t. They’re biting, deeply political, an unabashed love letter to art and philosophy and loss and the things that inspire or explain real, lasting change.
The narrator gives an irreproachable performance, turning the audiobook into a wholly different experience. He’s likable, charming, with an incredible sense for the subtleties of voice acting. Even if you’ve read the book on page, his work is worth enjoying.
Here’s to you, Mrs. Collins. You’ve done it again, better than ever.

Lovely short story
Revisado: 10-14-23
A lovely short story set at the end of the world which is also the beginning of the world. A good performance from the narrator - I found her voice to be perfect for the character she was reading.

The fantasy novel you’ve always wished Jane Austen had written. When Jane realizes that one of Melody’s suitors is set on taking advantage of her sister for the sake of her dowry, she pushes her skills to the limit of what her body can withstand in order to set things right—and, in the process, accidentally wanders into a love story of her own.

Really enjoyable
Revisado: 05-01-23
I wasn’t sure if this would be a retelling of PandP or something else but I have been in a Regency mood and thought I would give it a try. The concept was fun, the Regency setting as accurate as I could evaluate, and while it was not a direct PandP retelling, you could see the influences. The reader, who is also the author, has a pleasant voice and great pacing. But I docked a star for the affected accent :) This last decade has made me more particular about accents. So my only complaint is while I know it was cost saving to self read (and the author is a good reader), I would have preferred an authentic accent.

Historia
Nell Young’s whole life and greatest passion is cartography. Her father, Dr. Daniel Young, is a legend in the field, and Nell’s personal hero. But she hasn't seen or spoken to him ever since he cruelly fired her and destroyed her reputation after an argument over a cheap old gas station highway map. But when Dr. Young is found dead in his office at the New York Public Library, with the very same seemingly worthless map hidden in his desk, Nell can’t resist investigating. To her surprise, she soon discovers that the map is incredibly valuable, and also exceedingly rare.

Beautifully written and somewhat flawed
Revisado: 05-20-22
This author’s voice is amazingly beautiful. The concept here is so intriguing. But this book feels like it needed a much more brutal editor. The action wasn’t well paced. The flashback scenes were awkwardly detailed and written with incongruous language considering the supposed audience and 25 years that had passed. I made the villain quite early on and no amount of yelling at the book got the characters to do the same. I didn’t really like the familial mystery or resolution, didn’t find it believable or the consequence high stakes enough to justify the plot - even in this book about magical realism. I would love to see a well edited version of this story.

Historia
Multiverse travel is finally possible, but there’s just one catch: No one can visit a world where their counterpart is still alive. Enter Cara, whose parallel selves happen to be exceptionally good at dying—from disease, turf wars, or vendettas they couldn’t outrun. Cara’s life has been cut short on 372 worlds in total. On this dystopian Earth, however, Cara has survived. Identified as an outlier and therefore a perfect candidate for multiverse travel, Cara is plucked from the dirt of the wastelands.

Historia
The Royal Society of Unnatural Philosophers, one of the most respected organizations throughout all of England, has long been tasked with maintaining magic within His Majesty's lands. But lately the once proper institute has fallen into disgrace, naming an altogether unsuitable gentleman - a freed slave who doesn't even have a familiar - as their Sorcerer Royal and allowing England's once profuse stores of magic to slowly bleed dry. At least they haven't stooped so low as to allow women to practice....

Revisado: 10-17-18
I’ve been expecting to read this for a long while and finally got the time. It isn’t a hugely novel storyline, kind of Hunger Games ish with video games. And I think that sat wrong with me. I believe my dislike is pretty personal so if this seems like the kind of book you’d like, this performance is worth trying.

Historia
A Great Winged One will soon arise and cast his fearsome shadow upon the land. And just as Night slays Day, and Day slays Night, so also shall another Black Witch rise to meet him, her powers vast beyond imagining. So foretells the greatest prophecy of the Gardnerian mages. Carnissa Gardner, the last prophesied Black Witch, drove back the enemy forces and saved her people during the Realm War. Now a new evil is on the horizon, and her granddaughter, Elloren, is believed to be Carnissa's heir—but utterly devoid of power in a society that prizes magical ability above nearly all else.

Did you hear about the controversy?
Revisado: 12-01-17
It’s not not a valid complaint. Anyone who objects to the racism in this book has missed the point entirely - or more likely, hasn’t actually read the novel. This is the story of a young woman raised with a limited worldview who’s advancement to university slowly opens her eyes. Without being accepting or apologetic, its possible to see how decent people could buy into such limited views. The kind of emotional turn-around illustrated here could come across as trite. In this case it’s quite masterfully handled with the characters having positive and negative experiences that shape their beliefs again and again in a very realistic way. Particular praise to the voice actor who reads the audible version. She did an amazing job with unique terms and names and generally made it possible for me to fall into this book hook line and sinker.

A Wonderful Story
Revisado: 04-18-15
This book is simply stunning. A strong yet human antagonist, a voice which I could swear I would recognize anywhere by now, and a thrilling story, just the right mix of romance, adventure, and sci-fi. Warranting a five-star rating and a round of applause, Amy Bartrol's second Kricket book did not disappoint after the high expectations set by its prequel. The narrator was wonderful, giving Kricket even more of a voice and character. I have a funny feeling that this will not be the only comment full of adamant praise for this book, and look forward to reading the opinions of others.
