Historia
Just as Fred is settling down in his new abode, he receives word that a favor is being called in, one he promised to a dangerously powerful member of otherworldly royalty. Bracing danger, adventure, and unknown threats, Fred is instead asked to take on an entirely different role than anticipated. Acting as interim professor at one of the few universities for supernatural entities, Fred will have to navigate a strange environment, eccentric coworkers, and unenthusiastic students. Yet that alone won't be enough, for this college has more history than the tales in its tomes.

I am waiting for the let down.
Revisado: 01-18-23
so far, I have enjoyed every book in this series and the NPCs series. I seem to start each book expecting a disappointment, only to be pulled into Drew's theatric writing style. I like the spin on the old tropes without the emo versions that seem to be popular to write these days.
OK, there is some emo with the heroes or what I would think of as overly emotional, but in general, I enjoy the characters and would suggest it to anyone that wanted the fantasy monsters interacting with our world.

The adventuring industry drives the economy of Arth, a world much like our own but with more magic and fewer vowels. Monsters' hoards are claimed, bought by corporate interests, and sold off to plunder funds long before the Heroes' Guild actually kills the beasts. Of course, that's a terrible arrangement for the Shadowkin; orcs, goblins, kobolds, and their ilk must apply for to become Noncombatant Paper Carriers (or NPCs) to avoid being killed and looted by heroes.

I didn't think I was going to enjoy this saga, and then listened to the series back to back; and may have put off some sleep. Many other reviewers have given great synopsis and I don't want to remake better statements poorly.
edit: I originally was not fond of the narrator but he's grown on me.
some topics you might recognize that the author touches on: the financial crisis, the opioid crisis, social issues, trolls, dwarves, and the undead.

a great addition
Revisado: 02-25-19
I have listened to this book several times. I think the world of Fred the Accountant is beautifully whimsical and offbeat. This book is great because the protagonist offers a deeper insight into that world. if you enjoyed the other Fred books, I find it hard to imagine you would not enjoy this one as much.

Historia
Sheila Bair is widely acknowledged in government circles and the media as one of the first people to identify and accurately assess the subprime crisis. Appointed by George W. Bush as the chairperson of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) in 2006, she witnessed the origins of the financial crisis and, in 2008, became - along with Hank Paulson, Ben Bernanke, and Timothy Geithner-one of the key players invested in repairing the damage to our economy.

Wow! Bair Hates Geithner
Revisado: 01-16-16
What did you like best about Bull by the Horns? What did you like least?
I suppose I like hearing another point of view about the crisis. Sheila Bair really turned this into a Geithner bashing book
What could Sheila Bair have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
I think she could have been a little more realistic. The others that wrote about the subject admit they made mistakes and tried to describe situations, Mrs. Bair treats her opinions as the perfect and correct choices every time. She basically makes herself a hero that is the victim of a huge conspiracy.
What does Joyce Bean bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Mrs. Bean reads it in a tone that I could really imagine Mrs. Bair using. She just sounds grouchy, but that could be the material.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
I probably would just because of the subject, and then leave the theater mad at myself.
Any additional comments?
The first half seemed ok, but after about the 5th hour it turns into a Tim Geithner bash. I think she mentions him more than anyone else. If what she says is true then Geithner is a mastermind and one of the most powerful men in America, because he runs a huge conspiracy that controlled everyone and may have actually caused the Recession to benefit Citi.

Historia
Anything can be measured. This bold assertion is the key to solving many problems in business and life in general. The myth that certain things can't be measured is a significant drain on our nation's economy, public welfare, the environment, and even national security. In fact, the chances are good that some part of your life or your professional responsibilities is greatly harmed by a lack of measurement---by you, your firm, or even your government.

A "Quantum Leap" married with "Hitchhiker's Guide.
Revisado: 09-08-12
I liked the way this book hopped around a bit, but was always in a specific direction. It put me in mind of "The Hitchhiker's Trilogy" but had the odd bouncing feel like the old Quantum Leap TV show. I enjoyed it overall.
I think Fenton-Stevens did a good job and most people will probably like his style. I personally tend to enjoy a lot more animation in narrators like a lot of inflections and voices for the characters. I didn't feel like his narration moved a lot. My favorite narrator so far I think is Stephen Briggs, so if you have listened to other Pratchett audio books, then you may understand my personal preference.
I think the people that complain about discworld being stagnant but like the Pratchett style, will find this book significantly different. It is not full of that "matter-of-fact" style humor but has a few humorous moments that are mostly toned down.
The story is nice, and bounces around nicely, but still has a direction.

The town of Ankh-Morpork is in big trouble, and the City Watch is desperate for a few good men to protect it. But all they've got are the dwarves Corporal Carrot and Lance-constable Cuddy; the troll Lance-constable Detritus; Lance-constable Angua, who is believed to be a woman; and, worst of all, Corporal Nobbs, who has been disqualified from the human race for shoving!

A great book, Narrator seems a bit congested...
Revisado: 08-21-12
Would you listen to Men at Arms again? Why?
I would listen to it again, because the story is wonderful. This is the second book in the Night Watch part of the discworld series. I loved i when I read it, and I love it now
What other book might you compare Men at Arms to and why?
If you are looking for the cynical satire, then Douglas Adams' Dirk Gently is a great read, if it is another night watch book, then the Fifth Elephant is a fun read
What aspect of Nigel Planer’s performance would you have changed?
I like the fact that Nigel is a very Dynamic reader, but he sounds congested all of the time. I also think the voice dynamic he picks for some of the characters is incorrect of the character. Now with this said I have read these books several times so I'm sure my own preconceived notion is causing some irritation.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
When the machine is about to breakdown, it is time to call in the best of the worst.
