What did you like best about The Obstacle Is the Way? What did you like least?

I felt like the book could have been done and dusted in 2 or 3 chapters. There wasn't much new content, it was the same stuff over and over. Maybe I'm just jaded because I've already read a lot of books with this sort of content.

If you’ve listened to books by Ryan Holiday before, how does this one compare?

I really enjoyed "Trust Me, I'm Lying". It was engaging because I suspected what was going on in new media but this book really laid it bare. I think the difference is that instead of re-presenting other peoples ideas the author was giving insight into something he knew inside and out.

What didn’t you like about Ryan Holiday’s performance?

His voice was nasal because I think he had a cold or a blocked nose. This was pretty hard to listen to.

What disappointed you about The Fold?

I really enjoyed 14 so when I saw there was a new book by Peter Clines I bought it straight away. I felt that The Fold was a rehash of 14 but with flatter, more annoying characters and it didn't really add to the cosmology Clines has been working with in any meaningful way. Mostly I was just hoping for all the irritating protagonists to get eaten by the giant alpha predator.

How could the performance have been better?

I don't really enjoy male narrators who change the pitch of their voice for female characters. It sounds weird and actually makes me annoyed with the characters!

What character would you cut from The Fold?

Sasha! By half way through the book every phrase she uttered was "Fuck me". I was actually hoping she'd get killed off so I wouldn't have to listen to her again.
The main character, Mike, was also infuriating. We were told over and over again how super intelligent he was, but he acted like an idiot most of the time. He had a method of seeing and remembering that was conceptualised as 'ants' working in his brain. The 'ants' were brought up so many times that I kept forgetting they were to do with his thought patterns and had moments of wondering if there was a plague of mutants ants coming through from the other dimensions.

What made the experience of listening to The Ritual the most enjoyable?

The pace is good, it keeps you engaged and wanting to find out what is going to happen next.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Ritual?

It's genuinely creepy, the first half of the book in particular. The story was unusual and interesting, the characters were engaging and you never knew quite what was going to happen until the very end.

What does David Thorpe bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I really loved the narrator! A good narrator can make the experience of listening to an audiobook so much better.

Any additional comments?

I decided to listen to this book because I wanted to find out what the Pick Up Artist community is all about, why it exists and what they do. I find the whole PUA culture weird, disturbing and rather tragic, but I found this book very interesting and compelling.

It doesn't say good things about our society that the PUA community is so large and that guys feel this is the best, or only, way to meet women. I understand that part of the process if to make men feel more confident in themselves and therefore make them happier and more attractive. This seems like the positive part of the process, but they way they go about it and their attitudes towards women are just WEIRD. It seemed like they saw women as another species who have to be tricked and manipulated, or even a collectible card game where you try and get the special edition card that the other guys covet the most. It didn't seem like they were getting to know women or picking up girls they were personally interested in, but trying to score the 'prizes' they thought would most impress other men.

I don't think this is a book to listen to if you want to learn the PUA techniques, but it's very entertaining if you want to find out about the culture and what they were up to at the time this was written (apparently things have changed and the movement has split into competitive factions all trying to cash in on some mens inability to talk to women).Overall, although I enjoyed the craziness of the car-crash being played out in the book, it made me feel pretty sad about the state of male/female relationships, and I had to keep reminding myself that these guys are in the minority. The narration is good and the pace of the book is good too.

Fairly Tedious

Although this isn't quite as bad as some other reviewers have said, it is tedious, especially towards the end.

It actually starts out quite well and initially I was very engaged and interested in the story. Once the characters get to the mound everything starts to drag on and a very simple storyline that would have been better as a short story is dragged out into novel-length.I fastforwarded through the last few chapters because i was so sick of waiting for something to happen.

The author goes into great depth with what each person is thinking, doing, saying but still manages to create very one-dimensional and irritating characters. I think he is trying to create a feeling of claustrophobic tension but it just doesn't work and becomes repetetive and boring instead.

The narrators blocked nose is also very annoying. I think i should have got the abridged version...
