Historia
The lives of Leonardo da Vinci, Henry VIII, and Queen Victoria fill bookshelves and fascinate scholars all over the world. But little attention is given to the ferret who posed for the Renaissance master, the servant who oversaw the Tudor’s toilet time, or the famous horse who thrilled the miserable old monarch. These supporting cast members have been waiting in the wings for too long, and Adrian Bliss thinks it’s high time they join their glory-hogging contemporaries in the spotlight. Fortunately, now they can.

Not really that good if you aren’t familiar and enjoy the author’s other work (I believe he is on YouTube). In fact, not even worth a credit funny. I’m sure it is a matter of taste, but be forewarned.

Historia
It can come in waves - like tidal waves. It changes societies. It disrupts life. It ends lives. As far back as 3000 B.C.E. (the Bronze Age), plagues have stricken mankind. COVID-19 is just the latest example, but history shows that life continues. It shows that knowledge and social cooperation can save lives. Viruses are neither alive nor dead and are the closest thing we have to zombies. Their only known function is to replicate themselves, which can have devastating consequences on their hosts.

The deliberate and liberally biased mispronunciation of Fox News (Faux) in the Covid segment did not go unnoticed by me. When will people learn that if your goal is to only tell half of the country a story, tailor your story to one bias. Better to keep your politics out of my buying choices.

The racial slurs were rampant, and I am no prude about language that pertains to the story. But this was way over the top. I understand it was about a different time, but some trimming is in order.

Colin Dickey is on the trail of America's ghosts. Crammed into old houses and hotels, abandoned prisons and empty hospitals, the spirits that linger continue to capture our collective imagination, but why? His own fascination piqued by a house hunt in Los Angeles that revealed derelict foreclosures and "zombie homes", Dickey embarks on a journey across the continental United States to decode and unpack the American history repressed in our most famous haunted places.

Excellent example of a beautifully written story woven like lace
Revisado: 06-26-24
The author wove the story as though words were a paint being delicately placed on a large canvas. Creating her story slowly, weaving the tale that slowly grows with a background of descriptive beauty rarely seen in modern books. An utter joy that leaves other books lacking.

Many of us learn about the major inventions that shape our world. But we too often overlook the objects we use every day. In The Story Behind, Emily Prokop, creator of the Webby Award nominated podcast, explores the who, how, and huh? of everything from Band-Aids to bubble gum; hypnosis to Hula Hoops; and lullabies to lead pipes. Along the way, she demonstrates how the major events of history - from wars, plagues and revolutions to historic achievements and discoveries - have influenced some of the world’s most pervasive inventions.

I had to look that up, so I must not be the target audience.
In first part of book she states that all she knew about inventions was that “white men invented them”. Perhaps a little history lesson about the massive contributions Asian, Arabic and African cultures made in the early history when white people were scratching out a life in Europe…

Historia
For most of its 5,000-year existence, China has been the largest, most populous, wealthiest, and mightiest nation on Earth. And for us as Westerners, it is essential to understand where China has been in order to anticipate its future. These 36 eye-opening lectures deliver a comprehensive political and historical overview of one of the most fascinating and complex countries in world history. You'll learn about the powerful dynasties that ruled China for centuries; the philosophical and religious foundations-particularly Confucianism, Daoism, and Buddhism-that have influenced every iteration of Chinese thought, and the larger-than-life personalities, from both inside and outside its borders, of those who have shaped China's history. As you listen to these lectures, you'll see how China's politics, economics, and art reflect the forces of its past. From the "Mandate of Heaven," a theory of social contract in place by 1500 B.C.E., 3,000 years before Western philosophers such as Thomas Hobbes and John Locke, to the development of agriculture and writing independent of outside influence to the technologically-advanced Han Dynasty during the time of the Roman Empire, this course takes you on a journey across ground that has been largely unexplored in the history courses most of us in the West have taken. In guiding you through the five millennia of China's history, Professor Hammond tells a fascinating story with an immense scope, a welcome reminder that China is no stranger to that stage and, indeed, has more often than not been the most extraordinary player on it.

Great idea. Not a great, even good, book.
Revisado: 03-28-23
The bones were great, but the book did not deliver. Hard to follow and get invested. Side story with father was overdone to the max and general family dynamics (present day) were confusing and added little to the story…. In fact it would have been a better story if the WW 2 story had been told without the “current” story line.

Historia
Caroline Overington's stunning fiction debut is a multi-voiced novel centred around a child's death and its terrible repercussions. In 1982 Victorian police were called to a home on a housing estate an hour west of Melbourne. There, they found a five-year-old boy lying still and silent on the carpet. There were no obvious signs of trauma, but the child, Jacob, died the next day. The story made the headlines, and hundreds attended the funeral. Few people were surprised when the boy's mother and her boyfriend went to prison for the crime.

Not your usual book….
Revisado: 03-08-23
I had a hard time with the Australian jargon referring to public housing and “welfare”. Was also struck by some of the characters open contempt for Aboriginals. I am not a person who would yell racism but the attitude was distasteful and yet interesting, if not uncomfortable. The book was also an indictment to the foster care system and to the attitude toward people who are “not quite acceptable to societal norms”.
The insight of the author is amazing and lends her apparently real life knowledge, be it as a ward of the “system” or an administrative person in the system to the story.
