Historia
Peri, a wealthy Turkish housewife, is on her way to a dinner party at a seaside mansion in Istanbul when a beggar snatches her handbag. As she wrestles to get it back, a photograph falls to the ground. A relic from a past - and a love - Peri had tried desperately to forget. The photograph takes Peri back to Oxford University, as an 18-year-old sent abroad for the first time. It also takes her to her home with her two best friends, Shirin and Mona, and their arguments about Islam and femininity and to the scandal that tore them all apart.

I am drained!
Revisado: 01-22-20
I dozed off quite a lot listening to this, even though I love Alix's reading and Elif Shafak's writing.
I don't know who to be mad at over how this book made me feel, so I will just shelf my anger in the crook of my throat and try to wash it down later with a better book.

Alix really did try for this one, but this whole book is impossible to follow for me. I can't continue listening past chapter 8.

Historia
From the Orange Prize-winning, internationally best-selling author of The Song of Achilles comes the powerful story of the mythological witch Circe, inspired by Homer's Odyssey. In the house of Helios, god of the sun and mightiest of the Titans, a daughter is born. But Circe has neither the look nor the voice of divinity and is scorned and rejected by her kin. Increasingly isolated, she turns to mortals for companionship, leading her to discover a power forbidden to the gods: witchcraft.

Historia
Our brains stay active for 10 minutes after our heart stops beating. For Leila, each minute brings with it a new memory: growing up with her father and his wives in a grand old house in a quiet Turkish town; watching the women gossip and wax their legs while the men went to mosque; sneaking cigarettes and Western magazines on her way home from school; running away to Istanbul to escape an unwelcome marriage; falling in love with a student who seeks shelter from a riot in the brothel where she works.

Revisado: 11-27-19
I am breathless. I have been a fan of Elif Shafak for long, and clearly that's not about to change any time soon. You should buy this. It's worth every dollar!
The reading is perfect, the story a sad nectar, and the writing is plainly gorgeous.

Historia
Eltahawy knows the patriarchy is alive and well, and she is fed up: Sexually assaulted during hajj at 15. Groped on the dance floor of a night club in Montreal at 50. Countless other injustices in the years between. Illuminating her call to action are stories of activists and ordinary women around the world who are tapping into their inner fury, crossing the lines of race, class, faith, and gender that make it so hard for marginalized women to be heard. Rather than teach women and girls to survive the poisonous system they have found themselves in, Eltahawy arms them to dismantle it.

LET US CELEBRATE WOMEN AND GIRLS WHO SIN!
Revisado: 09-24-19
"Fuck the patriarchy!"
It is typical Mona Eltahawy, same theme of fighting against the patriarchy, same signature passion, yet a dash more intense with the contemporary examples of patriarchy's violations even as recently as 2018. It screams "How the FUCK is this still happening?!"
I am ANGRY!!! And YOU SHOULD BE TOO!

How did Fidel Castro fool the CIA for a generation? Why did Neville Chamberlain think he could trust Adolf Hitler? Why are campus sexual assaults on the rise? Do television sitcoms teach us something about the way we relate to each other that isn't true? While tackling these questions, Malcolm Gladwell was not solely writing a book for the page. He was also producing for the ear. In the audiobook version of Talking to Strangers, you’ll hear the voices of people he interviewed - scientists, criminologists, military psychologists.

I actually liked the content of this book
Revisado: 09-13-19
I may have rushed to buy this one, maybe had I read other reviews I'd have known that it's in Podcast format.
The content is superb, the narration, although it may appeal to many is just not my cuppa tea.

Historia
This live performance of a powerful police procedural comes to life through the artistry of Celeste Lecesne and is accompanied by the original music of Duncan Sheik. Celeste portrays every character in a small Jersey Shore town as they unravel the story of Leonard Pelkey, a tenaciously optimistic and flamboyant 14-year-old boy who has gone missing. A luminous force of nature whose magic is only truly felt once he is gone, Leonard becomes an unexpected inspiration as the town’s citizens question how they live, who they love, and what they leave behind.

Historia
The seminal rap group A Tribe Called Quest brought jazz into the genre, resurrecting timeless rhythms to create masterpieces. This narrative follows Tribe from their early days as part of the Afrocentric rap collective known as the Native Tongues, through their first three classic albums, to their eventual breakup and long hiatus. Throughout the narrative, poet and essayist Hanif Abdurraqib connects the music and cultural history to their street-level impact and draws from his own experience to reflect on how its distinctive sound resonated among fans like himself.

I don't even love hip-hop all that much!
Revisado: 08-31-19
I spread this over a drawn out week, first because of how beautiful the narration is I want to listen to this man forever, but most importantly due to the fact that I had to look up so much while listening. I didn't know jackshit about hip-hop herstory before now, but I'm an expert now, give me all your money! 😂
