Historia
The Culture - a human/machine symbiotic society - has thrown up many great Game Players, and one of the greatest is Gurgeh. Jernau Morat Gurgeh. The Player of Games. Master of every board, computer and strategy. Bored with success, Gurgeh travels to the Empire of Azad, cruel and incredibly wealthy, to try their fabulous game...a game so complex, so like life itself, that the winner becomes emperor. Mocked, blackmailed, almost murdered, Gurgeh accepts the game, and with it the challenge of his life - and very possibly his death.

Historia
The war raged across the galaxy. Billions had died, billions more were doomed. Moons, planets, the very stars themselves, faced destruction, cold-blooded, brutal, and worse, random. The Idirans fought for their Faith; the Culture for its moral right to exist. Principles were at stake. There could be no surrender. Within the cosmic conflict, an individual crusade. Deep within a fabled labyrinth on a barren world, a Planet of the Dead proscribed to mortals, lay a fugitive Mind. Both the Culture and the Idirans sought it....

Unique plot & story line
Revisado: 01-15-24
Predictability at moments only serve as bait to complacency, where preconceived notions soon die. The story is as raw, emotional and brutal as the depth of the existential questions it begs. I will be sharing this story and seeking out other titles by its author. I only wish the authors consciousness could have been uploaded before their passing, so that I could have had a chance to interview them.

Historia
We are living through the most prosperous age in all of human history, yet we are listless, divided, and miserable. Wealth and comfort are unparalleled, but our political landscape is unmoored, and rates of suicide, loneliness, and chronic illness continue to skyrocket. How do we explain the gap between these truths? And how should we respond? For evolutionary biologists Heather Heying and Bret Weinstein, the cause of our troubles is clear: The accelerating rate of change in the modern world has outstripped the capacity of our brains and bodies to adapt.

Perfectly imperfect
Revisado: 02-01-22
This volume is poignantly composed from a salient perspective of evolutionary biology. The few trepidations I have with principles espoused in the middle pale against the accomplishment of the purpose. Accounting our predicament, options, tools, strengths and weaknesses in an applicable framework is a powerful achievement.

Historia
Coming home from the war in Iraq, US Army private Roy Scranton thought he'd left the world of strife behind. Then he watched as new calamities struck America, heralding a threat far more dangerous than ISIS or al-Qaeda: Hurricane Katrina, Superstorm Sandy, megadrought - the shock and awe of global warming. Our world is changing. Rising seas, spiking temperatures, and extreme weather imperil global infrastructure, crops, and water supplies. Conflict, famine, plagues, and riots menace from every quarter.

Historia
Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859) was an intrepid explorer and the most famous scientist of his age. His restless life was packed with adventure and discovery, whether climbing the highest volcanoes in the world or racing through anthrax-infested Siberia. He came up with a radical vision of nature, that it was a complex and interconnected global force and did not exist for man's use alone. Ironically, his ideas have become so accepted and widespread that he has been nearly forgotten.

Historia
Stephen Miller is one of the most influential advisors in the White House. He has crafted Donald Trump’s speeches, designed immigration policies that ban Muslims and separate families, and outlasted such Trump stalwarts as Steve Bannon and Jeff Sessions. But he’s remained an enigma. Until now. Emmy- and PEN-winning investigative journalist and author Jean Guerrero charts the 34-year-old’s astonishing rise to power, drawing from more than 100 interviews with his family, friends, adversaries, and government officials.

Exceptionally uncomfortable
Revisado: 09-17-20
Hard to listen to all the unnecessary deaths, suffering, pain and allegations of causal hatred, racism, bigotry and the like. Hard to hear this characterization of the division of my country by those who would seek to "save" it from threats that actually have not ever existed. Hard to realize that the awful behavior of rioters in our streets today is essentially a backlash against this behavior as it has ramped up over 4 short years, releasing pent up rage borne of pain and wiping away gains in civil rights that have come excruciatingly and unconscionably slowly over the last 150 years. Hard to face the facts and consequences of the nation's acceptance of and subsequent inability to heal from the deep wounds inflicted upon its very soul by institutional slavery. Hard to hold that responsibility. Hard to find hope for recovery. Impossible not to mourn.

Historia
If anyone could be considered a Russian counterpart to the infamous British double-agent Kim Philby, it was Oleg Gordievsky. The son of two KGB agents and the product of the best Soviet institutions, the savvy, sophisticated Gordievsky grew to see his nation's communism as both criminal and philistine. He took his first posting for Russian intelligence in 1968 and eventually became the Soviet Union's top man in London, but from 1973 on he was secretly working for MI6.

Riveting, painful, triumphant and profoundly sad.
Revisado: 09-10-20
This story cooks ideology, fealty, family, society, duty and morality all together in a boiling cauldron of the human condition. This is a gut wrenching true story of love, loss, loyalty, deceit and the high cost of choices that have shaped history. I couldn't put it down and when it was over, I wanted to go cry in a hot shower to wash away the pain.

Revisado: 03-03-19
I had not appreciated unauthorized 1st person narrative biographical sketches since a child and unshelved this one by accident of not previewing it. This moving and so very human story of the courtship of Marie Sladowski and Pierre Curie has changed my view of the genre. I might even give it another listen after I study up on the other characters in it!
