Not good for audio
Revisado: 09-26-22
I love her writing. It’s so rich and the complex relationship between Robin and Strike is so compelling. The book is not my favorite of the series but possibly because it just doesn’t translate to audio because the meat of the story takes place deep in the internet. It’s terribly challenging to follow. Would be much better as a read.

Historia
Retired publisher Susan Ryeland is living the good life. She is running a small hotel on a Greek island with her long-term boyfriend Andreas. It should be everything she's always wanted. But is it? She's exhausted with the responsibilities of making everything work on an island where nothing ever does, and truth be told, she's beginning to miss London. And then the Trehearnes come to stay. The strange story they tell about an unfortunate murder that took place on the same day and in the same hotel in which their daughter was married fascinates Susan and piques her editor's instincts.

Did someone say Poirot?
Revisado: 12-30-20
The book was incredibly clever and in an era where I have to search hard for a good mystery that’s not torture, kidnapping, child or animal abuse, or blood and guts gory - I find that delightfully refreshing!!
I too was a bit confused going from the book to the novella but I got to listen to it again. I love a book of this length that is this much fun as the enjoyment lasts long
I miss Agatha’s Hercule, but the clever Atticus has so many of his qualities I felt like I had come home!

Loved this book. Loved the character development. Loved the way the author let us into Ben’s head. The scene where he was deposing was priceless. I listened to it three times. Laughed out loud. His insecurities and corresponding metamorphosis are enchanting.

I thought I was reading Michael Connelly for a moment! I shy away from Audible Originals for obvious reasons. It’s like self publishing. Since no one else would pick it up - you get the picture. But really I am a convert. This mystery was smart, interesting, suspenseful with complex characters. Felt like Harry Bosch’s other brother. Loved it!!

As good as ever
Revisado: 11-16-14
What did you love best about The Burning Room?
Classic Bosch. Smart, confident, complicated...maybe not his best but no dissapointment from this Connelly fan. Don't like when authors try to get creative with their beloved characters.
What other book might you compare The Burning Room to and why?
Each of Connelly's books stands on its own. I don't like to compare.
What about Titus Welliver’s performance did you like?
I read the criticisms on Wellivers performance and I just don't agree. His smooth, cool tone and unemotional affect is exactly what I would like expect from Harry.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
I find the evolution of Harry's relationship with his daughter particularly touching. I was afraid when they introduced her she would unnaturally dominate the plot lines. But she remains a backdrop with just enough presence. Also liked his relationship with the journalist...nice to be inside his head to see his vulnerability.
Any additional comments?
Still one of the best detective series out there. Never a wasted credit.

Plot soars, ending bombs
Revisado: 03-04-13
Would you try another book from Ann Leary and/or Mary Beth Hurt?
Yes.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
The book had a great plot line with a good deal of suspense. The ending just plain fell flat. I went "what the heck" why did you bother to build us up like that only to let us down.
What about Mary Beth Hurt’s performance did you like?
She really got into the heads of characters and her portrayal was on point!
Do you think The Good House needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
No, there really isn't anywhere to go with this character.

Revisado: 01-23-12
Would you try another book from Stephen J. Cannell and/or Scott Brick?
I have read other Cannell books and loved them. He is a talented author, Which is why I chose this one. Cannell says in the beginning he wanted to write this for years. I can't imagine why. The story was tedious and the characters were extremely unlikeable. I had to fight to finish it. Yulk. As for Brick, as others have said, he could read the phone book and I would buy it!

Revisado: 01-22-12
If you could sum up The Cut in three words, what would they be?
Complex young anti-hero exuding sex appeal unafraid to confront the baddest of bad
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Cut?
Don't want to spoil it
What about Dion Graham’s performance did you like?
Abilty to pull off inner DC dialects; ability to personify Spero's coolness flawlessly
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes, but wouldn't let myself as it so infrequent you get a book you want to savor

thank you Ms. Light!
Revisado: 10-12-10
Whatever flaws the book had, and there were many, I have yet to be as captivated with a narrator as I was with Ms. Light. She was amazing. I agree with many of the reviewers who felt the book was entertaining enough, but predictable and light. But I couldn't stop listening due soley to the ability of Ms. Light to so wonderfully portay each of the main characters. I particularly loved her depiction of young Milo, .

Historia
Why we think it’s a great listen: When it comes to author/narrator pairings, nobody tops James Lee Burke and Will Patton in the Robicheaux thrillers. Beloved Burke hero Detective Dave Robicheaux here returns to New Iberia to solve a series of grisly murders. Seven young women in neighboring Jefferson Davis Parish have been brutally murdered. While the crimes have all the telltale signs of a serial killer, the death of Bernadette Latiolais, a high-school honor student, doesn’t fit.

Got to luv em!
Revisado: 08-30-10
You absolutely know what you are going to get with the Dave and Clete show -- the bad guys lose, the good guys win (not without a lot of blood and guts), a cold hard look at the underbelly of society, and an absolutely magical, poetic picture of bayou Louisiana. You can smell, feel and even taste the sights and sounds of this mystical place with all its haunting beauty. And Will Patton, well no one else could do justice to the brooding, complex character of Dave like he can. Yes, it was slightly predictable...but hey, that's why we love him. Don't give up on Dave and Clete ...in a literary world that is becoming increasingly commercialized, and novellsts offering up cookie cutter characters and flimsy plots, Burke never fails to deliver a profoundly well-written piece of work. One point -- do agree that Alafar is by far a bore as a character...totally unbelievable....with no real depth.
