This is an endearing story of hope and open hearted friendship. Young Lucy’s love of sea stars and science sparks her and her friends to action to help save their dwindling numbers on the Oregon coast. At the heart of the story, the author reveals the complexity of every day life and how taking the time to try to understand each persons story makes a difference. It is full of strong young female characters and highlights the power of kindness and shared community. This book is a great listen and thoughtfully opens up opportunity for discussion on challenging topics such as homelessness, poverty and loss of a parent. It inspires the reader to help Lucy and her friends by providing concrete action the reader can take to affect change in the real world. The narrator’s clear, matter of fact storytelling makes the tough subjects both accessible and relatable and the humor that much sweeter.

Ensemble cast took some getting used to...

The ensemble cast was very hard to wrap my head around at first, but then I fell in love with the readers. Lyra's small, fierce voice made her decisions more powerful as she gained momentum (might have watched Brave too many times with my girls to have an accurate first impression). With Julian Elfer's velvety reading I could only imagine Lysander retelling his story sitting curled around an espresso with a cigarette dangling from his fingers like this thing that happened was no big deal. John Curless reading is gritty, tired and bitter - perfect pitch. New times - new voices. Still, took some time to get used to- made more difficult by my complete and utter devotion to Tim Gerard Reynolds masterful narration. (Tim=squeeee!) The separate voices made sense to me- made them distinct from Darrow's narrative. Gave them their own life.

Totally agree that the sound balancing could be improved.

The book itself is fantastic. A stressful read because we care about the characters so much and the story is so intense (people die!!!, sadness, heartbreak, seriously poor decisions, betrayal, intrigue, so much blood!, characters who just want to open zoos! yeeaaasss). I loved hearing Ephraim's back story and Darrow, Sevro and Cassius' experiences as parents and the fallout of regime change. A Great sequel, a great beginning - can't wait for Sons of Ares.
