Another excellent story from Alice Coldbreath, narrator not up to snuff

As always, Alice Coldbreath delivers: exceptional character development, an impeccable sense of time and style of the era, and a firm hand on the rein with pacing. Unfortunately, I don’t believe the narrator complements the style of the novel. Alice Coldbreath is a master of highlighting and dramatization of disparate characters meeting and finding common ground. The prude and the scoundrel. The innocent and the jaded. Beauty and the Beast.

In previous narrated books with Anne Flosnik or Carmen Rose, you have a partner in playing up the juxtaposition and journey of the different characters. Each of these narrators have an incredible range and really complement the work.

Unfortunately, Abigail Langham’s range is sadly limited. She has a whispery youthful and feminine voice that isn’t unpleasant, it just doesn’t really go anywhere. Of note, she could not bring Jeremy (MC) to life and I found that many nuances of humor and substance that are characteristic of this author were missed. Perhaps it is simply her lack of experience, but I find that she is just not a good fit for an author of this style and caliber. I purchase all of Alice Coldbreath’s books as well as the audiobooks, but sadly will not be purchasing further books from this narrator.

This is a great book. Coming from the bottom and working your way through the dregs to something better is inspiring. Offers an lovely fantasy that mentally ill and socially awkward people will encounter a village of people that are emotionally stable and available and willing to envelop you in your journey to a better you. Oh and a guy who is a) emotionally healthy, b) empathetic and understanding of your mental issues c) hot, and d)single. Unicorns and cotton candy and rainbows.

It was hard to focus on the story when every time a new female character is introduced, we first learn about her breast size (author seems to like them small and PERKY) and pretty soon after, there is some very awkward, clunky sex scene where the OC is absolutely the best lover of all time, even with very little foreplay and seemingly no game.

All through these books the females are just absolutely throwing themselves at him and he is not into it, trying to tell them “no” but then his little Kaiyer just cannot stop himself and they are doing it. Friends who he knows love him but he doesn’t love them in return. Girls his friends love. Enemies who are skanky as hell. This guy gets ALL THE LADIES, and he will bone them all.

This guy who is supposedly thousands of years old and the best warrior general of the ages cannot manage his emotions or his hormones. I was hoping for some epic battles and strategy and other than the some minor battles with the wyrms under the castle and the (admittedly) cool scene with the dragon, we just got bogged down with his emotional constipation. Smh

The only thing keeping me reading is the super interesting concept re: different worlds and time travel. I want to know more so will probably stick it out while the books are included in my membership.

Unfortunately, the writing for the character Samantha seemed more appropriate for a mid 20th century American, not late 19th. Way too modern, which was a shame, because the character was an intriguing one. It was so jarring and asynchronous I kept thinking I was reading an “out of time” character. My recommendation: read any other of this series, they are better.

The story wasn’t bad but the female narrator was so wooden and lifeless. This just goes to show that just because your voice is pleasant doesn’t mean you can act. FLAT. I was interested in the story but ended up 2x the formal narration and skimming past a lot of her content because it was so bad. I will avoid this narrator moving forward.

This was a really enjoyable listen. I wasn’t a big fan of the Kelsey character before this book so actually almost skipped it but I am glad I didn’t. Theo was written as lovable and sexy but not over the top perfect as an introverted guy who loves numbers and has a WILD streak, WHEW these two! Intense but sweet. . By the way: can we just talk about how great this author is with naming her characters? Nothing weird or pretentious and the way she blends her MCs into relationships with peripheral characters is natural. Dialogue is easy to settle into and immerse.

Narrators: these two are a great fit for the material and style and really contribute to the story.

Look: this is not that deep. Written for the girl gaze, another reviewer said it best when they called this middle of the pack quality “ billionaire becomes inexplicably obessed with an average girl” fics. I don’t mind them, I mean…I am not the kind of person that goes to Taco Bell and complains that they can’t get sushi. This kind of work is not designed to make you think about your life or your choices, it is what it is-smutty escapism for middle class women. Period.

The narrators are doing their jobs. Mostly pleasant and inoffensive, not here to elevate the material. The female narrator has made the most constipated choice for voicing the male romantic lead. Like, it would be grating for any character, but this choice makes him sound like a middle aged man in need of a root canal. WHY? I couldn’t make it past the first 10 chapters. Maybe you can but there are other options from these narrators or these authors that I would go to first.

Pros: I truly enjoyed learning more about the culture, food, and traditions of the two families

Some sweet family elements; interesting perspectives on regret and changing viewpoints and forgiving others; change and growing up

Cons: oddly preachy? It often feels like a cautionary fable that already feels quite dated with the COVID emphasis rather than a fully fleshed out story. Perhaps cultural norms that simply do not translate?

With these elements the story can feel a little trite

Also, I just cannot classify this as romance.

Very compelling and interesting premise and awesome worldbuilding here. I do wish there was less time and energy spent on the “coming of age” self-focused existential angst. I find myself super interested and left hanging with little snippets of detail about the prophecy, lore, and background, would really love more fleshing out there.
