This is a totally absorbing story: interesting characters and an intricate plot. The narrator does an excellent job of conveying the emotions and portraying the variously different characters. Granted that his version of these Danes all have British accents, somehow they are all appropriate to their roles in the story.

And the story itself was so involving that I hated it when I had to stop listening in order to get on with my actual life, and could hardly wait for my next chance to catch up with Carl and company.

I highly recommend this book and this narrator.

I have been binge reading the Lucas Davenport series for more than a dozen titles now and am thoroughly hooked. Each plot is different enough from its predecessors that it keeps you completely engaged and clueless as to the ultimate outcome. The characters are interesting and three-dimensional, often leaving you feeling that you've grown to know them personally. And the writing is remarkable! I'm in awe of the ease with which the author evokes entire scenes and locations and atmospheres! And Richard Ferrone is an absolutely marvelous narrator; he may not always get the pitch of the characters' voices quite right but the tone and emotion are ALWAYS spot on. Makes for such entertaining listening, especially on those otherwise mind-numbingly boring bumper-to-bumper commutes back-and-forth to work every weekday!

Why oh why would the producers choose someone with a weird American accent to read this English detective novel? Why would they choose someone who pauses after every third or fourth word, whether or not a pause is necessary? I just got through with the first two books in this series, read and wonderfully performed by the marvelous Julia Farhat, only to be brought up short by this substandard rendition. I can't even realistically rate the story because I'm so put off by the narrator(s); if the story itself as good as the previous two, then it deserves more than the 3 stars I'm giving it, but I can't honestly give it any more than that because I don't think I'll be able to stand to listen to the whole thing. Also, I should mention that Julia Farhat performs all the roles herself - men, women, and all nationalities - with entertaining versatility. This version has an additional narrator voicing the female parts and while she imparts more emotion to the roles than the male narrator/reader, her voice is rather shrill and piercing, so not at all enjoyable. I was looking forward to continuing with this series but I'll have to pass on any books that are read by these narrators.

Great story, marvelous performance. But be warned: If you can't stand violence or gore this is probably not for you.

At first I wasn't sure that I was going to like this book; I wasn't sure that I was going to care enough about the characters to invest my time in it. The main character seems, at first, to be mad at the world, depressed, and disgusted with everything. He works with people who don't like him, don't trust him, and take every opportunity to make his life as miserable as possible. And even the universe is conspiring against him. How can you relate to someone like that?

But hold on! The longer I listened, the more I started to realize that underneath that grim exterior was someone who actually believed in the worth and value of (some) of his fellow humans, in spite of his life experience, and who was determined to make the best he could out of some truly unfortunate situations. So by the middle of the book I was firmly on the side of the protagonist...even as he continued to be the butt of the universe's cruelest jokes.

I also truly enjoyed so much of this author's clever and unexpected, but fitting, metaphors. How many times his very original turns of phrase evoked that mental "Oh yeah!" reaction: That in itself was enough to keep me hooked.

So I would advise anyone who starts this book to hang in there - it will be finally and ultimately be time well spent.

Having read the Peter Diamond mysteries, I knew I would enjoy this story. But narrator Simon Prebble made this a truly wonderful and entertaining experience! His rendition of the various characters is truly inspired, and makes listening to this intriguing mystery almost like listening to a radio play with different actors voicing each of the roles. Inflection, tone, attitude - Mr. Prebble has them all down perfectly. I was very sorry when the recording was over...

These stories may be more than 100 years old but they are still intriguing and entertaining. Sir Arthur is a wonderful storyteller who translates as beautifully to the spoken word as to the written page. Simon Vance does a marvelous job as narrator and seems to be having as much fun presenting the works as we have listening. I have spent many happy hours commuting in bumper-to-bumper stop-and-go traffic while communing with Simon and Sir Arthur, and not regretting a minute of it!
