I thought about giving this a 4 star rating, but I really couldn't justify it other than the fact that the story was just not really my taste. It had elements that I typically respond to positively (a story layered by the passing of time, it felt genuine and believable) but the "Our Town" central theme was lost on me as I'm not huge into theater. It was beautiful and much like a modern "Little Women."

Damn... I couldn't put this one down. Be prepared for all of the hard topics (suicide, abortion, hate crimes, etc.) but know that in the end it's an epic tale of love.

I wanted so badly to love this. I selected this for an enlightening summer read, hoping for some of that classic Offerman dry humor seasoned with delicious vocabulary and craftsman/nature-loving wisdom. The first chapters were fantastic and everything about his time helping his shepherd/author friend was sweet and meaningful, but by the end I got really tired of him apologizing for being who he is (a white guy) and I wanted so badly to just skip entire chapters where he rambled about his frustration with our government. I can sign on to any social media app to find all of that, so it's really not what I signed up for when I downloaded this audiobook. A fraction of his political concerns dealt directly with the subject of the book and America's grimy acquisition of sacred native lands and it's criminal treatment of Native Americans, but by the end it just became a rant against one particular administration and their rhetoric. Because of those ramblings, this book is probably not going to stand the test of time. With a little more editing, this could be a 5-star book, there are just too many parts where his rants get away from him and I feel like he is just saying things that he thinks we all want to hear. Finishing the second half of this book felt like a chore which was a really disappointing feeling.

If this had been the first thing I had ever read about Fred Rogers, I probably would have been more impressed with this work. However, after having listened to the official Fred Rogers biography, I found much of the information and anecdotes to be almost verbatim from the biography. My hope from this book was to have more about applying Rogers' philosophy and methods to today and the text only gets around to this in the second half of the book.

It's February 8th on 2022. I am finishing an audiobook written and read by John Green that took me only a week to consume despite the busyness of my life. My current self and all of my future selves are nourished by Green's words. This art gave me moments of learning and moments of personal awareness. I give the Anthropocene Reviewed 5 stars.

As a sucker for art history and museums, I thoroughly enjoyed this. The narrator has a soothing, but not boring, voice like the quiet kind of museum guide who is full of stories to share. I will keep this on my stack of books to repeat.

I absolutely loved this! It was not just a book that examined the exceptional minds, but it was a book about how exceptional all of our minds are. There were little brain exercises and experiments throughout the book that really helped to relate to those with such interesting cognitive operations. I loved the narrator's voice, too.

Great Art Historical Fiction

As an art historian myself I am picky about works of historical fiction involving the art world. What really worked for this story as opposed to others is that all of the characters were fictional but loosely based on real artists, so I never found myself calculating inaccuracies, I just enjoyed the story. It also stands to be noted that Cassandra Campbell is a phenomenal narrator! If you love art, strong female characters, architecture and modern art history, this is a great listen!

This satisfied my desire to just have Stephen Fry read me stories. As he explains in the end, this is just a beautiful telling of stories with no interpretation or psychological analysis, and that is exactly what I love about this audiobook!

I am really interested in criminal justice as a concerned citizen who works with youths. I have always understood that there is a correlation between mental health and our imprisoned population, but I was not really sure of the actual relationship between mental health care and criminal justice; this book did a great job of explaining how that relationship looks from region to region and the complexity of the issue of this relationship. I wouldn't say that I "enjoyed" this book because of the heaviness of it's content, but I feel more connected and concerned to these issues.
