He started the fire. Nate Shepherd's client didn't intend to kill anyone. That doesn't matter. After an old friend recruits him, Nate Shepherd heads north to defend a teenager charged with igniting a blaze that killed a toddler and a firefighter. When he arrives, Nate finds a neglected case and a looming trial date for double murder. As he scrambles to discover what happened, Nate is resisted by a stonewalling prosecutor and a grieving town, each bent on punishing his client. Worse, every fact Nate uncovers confirms that his client started the tragic Mission Road fire.

Enjoyable story, narration, and characters!
Revisado: 02-12-25
I've really enjoyed the entire Nate Shepherd series. The characters are interesting, the dialogue has a nice mix of humor and seriousness, and they are good mysteries. But this was one of my favorites. I hope there are more to come!

Historia
The weather is beautiful, work is slow, and her canine colleague could use a walk. But what begins as a fun field trip turns serious when a pair of rare hyacinth macaws named Fabiana and Fernando goes missing. Is the new custodian, a gentle soul who happens to be an ex-convict, to blame? Or is something far more sinister afoot? The birds are worth thousands of dollars, and the list of people on the premises who might have stolen them is long.

Another winner!
Revisado: 12-23-19
I love this series. The mysteries are light-hearted, without the dark creepy psychos that fill so many modern mysteries. The author thoughtfully weaves an important social issue or two into each book, and for "Paw of the Jungle," it's the illegal trade in exotic wildlife as well as well as the challenges ex-covicts face when they return to society. The narrator is fantastic, a perfect fit. She creates very sympathetic and likeable characters, and she brings to life exactly the right mix of superiority, playfulness, and disdain for human silliness in her voice for Bridget, the K-9 officer. Combined with the author's imaginative views into Bridget's mind, the occasional chapters from Bridget's point of view are pure delight. if you like deep, dark suspense, this probably isn't for you. But if you like to smile and feel happy while you listen, I highly recommend giving these books a try.

In a riveting debut thriller that has drawn comparisons to masters of the genre like Dennis Lehane and Michael Connelly, Brian Freeman weaves obsession, sex, and revenge into a story that grips the reader with vivid characters and shocking plot twists from the first minute to the last.

Too twisted for me
Revisado: 12-11-19
It started out as an interesting mystery, but as the story progressed, I felt rather disgusted by the author's repeated attitude toward sex. The message seemed to be that men are powerless over their lust for teenage girls and it's not really their fault. The girl and her beauty are to blame. Every relationship in the book involved sex, often overly descriptive and gratuitous. Additionally, the narrator's "female" voices sounded whiny or otherwise unlikable. The combination was disturbing to me. I will avoid this author in the future.

Spoiler Alert! Don't expect any resolution.
Revisado: 04-06-19
As many others have said, the plot twists are definitely intense and suspenseful, but just too improbable, and not adequately explained. I could live with that. However, the non-ending really made me feel cheated. it was as if the author couldn't figure out how to extricate himself from the mess he'd created and just quit. I enjoyed the first in the series, and so bought this without reading any reviews. My mistake. This is the first book in 10 years with Audible for which I will request a refund.

Disappointing!
Revisado: 12-28-18
I've enjoyed the first couple books in this series, mostly because I love that part of Ireland. This one was just plain bad. Moira, the main character, was not at all likeable, and her heroics and vanity are rather ridiculous. I'm not sure I can read another. Maybe it is partly the narrator, whose voice for Moira is a bit snobby, and not at all sympathetic. But the story, also, was just too simplistic and far-fetched. Moira snaps at the two men who care about her over stupid things, and it's a stretch to imagine why any man would like her, at least in this book.
