Historia
Africa has long been considered the cradle of life - where life and humans evolved - but somewhere west of Munich, Germany, paleoclimatologist and paleontologist Madelaine Böhme and her team make a discovery that is beyond anything they ever imagined: the 12-million-year-old bones of an ancient ape - Danuvius guggenmos - which makes headlines around the world and defies prevailing theories of human history and where human life began.

I enjoyed this book. I am fascinated by the constant advances in our understanding of how we got here. This book makes that topic interesting and understandable. The narration was excellent as well.

Historia
Roy Adkins, with his wife, Lesley, returns to the Napoleonic War in The War for All the Oceans, a gripping account of the naval struggle that lasted from 1798 to 1815, a period marked at the beginning by Napoleon's seizing power and at the end by the War of 1812. In this vivid and visceral account, Adkins draws on eyewitness records to portray not only the battles but also the details of a sailor's life: shipwrecks, press-gangs, prostitutes, spies, and prisoners of war.

a human side of the war
Revisado: 08-20-20
Not as much a history of events as it is a history of ordinary sailors who fought the war. Whatever you know of the Nspoleanic wars on land and sea, this will be a valuable augmentation. You will find that in the years from then to now much has changed, except for the men fighting the wars. For them it remains the same.

Best Ham study guide!
Revisado: 10-31-19
if you want to study for your Technician class ham license and dont have a lot of time you can devote to reading, this is an excellent, effective, entertaining and. yes, even amusing way to acquire the information you will need. Michael reads the questions, gives you the answers and then explains why the right answer is the correct one. A very good way to help with retention of pretty dry material. Highly recommended by this Technician class student.

For years, rumors of the "Marsh Girl" have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand.

Historia
Like Gettysburg, Stalingrad, Midway, and Tet, the battle at Dien Bien Phu - a strategic attack launched by France against the Vietnamese in 1954 after eight long years of war - marked a historic turning point. By the end of the 56-day siege, a determined Viet Minh guerrilla force had destroyed a large tactical French colonial army in the heart of Southeast Asia.

An epic battle- the fight to retain an empire
Revisado: 02-07-19
I served in Viet Nam and I suppose I always had a general idea about Dien Bien Phu having been a major battle where the French lost control of Viet Nam and that it was inflection point were the U.S. became the owner of "the problem". What I didn't know is how valiantly the French soldiers and their allies fought in this epic battle for the soul of a nation. My God, what a story, what courage, what a fight!. Just like my war, brave men fighting a stupid war, lead by myopic generals implementing an impossible strategy with tepid support from home - but what a fight by the soldiers - on both sides. Carnage and suffering last seen in WW I - and Bernard Fall tells it with a skill that puts you inside the wire. If you read military history, read this one.

An underwater exploration that overturns myths about fishes and reveals their complex lives, from tool use to social behavior. There are more than 30,000 species of fish - more than all mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians combined. But for all their breathtaking diversity and beauty, we rarely consider how fish think, feel, and behave.

Who knew fish were so smart?
Revisado: 02-07-19
If you have any interest at all in other intelligent life forms on this planet then give this book a listen. Fish may not be working out theoretical calculus in their schools but they are far more intelligent and their social lives far more interesting than I ever would have imagined.Definitely worth a listen if you have even a passing interest in biology.

Historia
In the fifth century BC, a global superpower was determined to bring truth and order to what it regarded as two terrorist states. The superpower was Persia, incomparably rich in ambition, gold, and men. The terrorist states were Athens and Sparta, eccentric cities in a poor and mountainous backwater: Greece. The story of how their citizens took on the Great King of Persia, and thereby saved not only themselves, but Western civilization as well, is as heart-stopping and fateful as any episode in history.

Ancient history comes alive
Revisado: 02-07-19
I listen to a lot of books. To some degree, they are back ground noise while I am engaged in other tasks. I was maybe 3 chapters into this when I realized- Hey - this is good - listen up! Tom Holland brings Greek and Persian history - and their wars - alive and as fresh as today's newspapers. I am a history buff and have read about this period and these cultures in other venues but the way it is presented here it comes alive. The personalities seem real and alive. Great read, well narrated, well done.

Historia
It was an explosion that reverberated across the country—and into the very heart of early-twentieth-century America. On the morning of October 1, 1910, the walls of the Los Angeles Times Building buckled as a thunderous detonation sent men, machinery, and mortar rocketing into the night air. When at last the wreckage had been sifted and the hospital triage units consulted, twenty-one people were declared dead and dozens more injured. But as it turned out, this was just a prelude to the devastation that was to come.

Engaging, intersting story but could use an editor
Revisado: 02-07-19
This was an interesting story about a period in American history that does not get much coverage anywhere else. It attempts to weave several threads together as the story line progresses, but I found the story line too complicated, disjointed and the connection tenuous at best. Still, a good story, history you might not already be aware of, well narrated and interesting. So, overall - worth the read.

To most of us, learning something 'the hard way' implies wasted time and effort. Make It Stick turns fashionable ideas like these on their head and will appeal to all those interested in the challenge of lifelong learning and self-improvement.

Good coverage of How We Learn
Revisado: 02-07-19
I bought this title hoping it would help me retain more of what I have been reading. Turns out I have to work for it. This is a good coverage of how humans learn and how to retain what you learn. Well written, well narrated and backed by science and studies, it tells you how actual humans can become masters of their subject matter. But, there are no tricks or shortcuts - you have to do the work. It explains why you have to do the work and how to do the work. Alas, you still are stuck with having to do the work.
