I've read a lot of the stoics, and this is surprisingly the worst by far. doesn't live up to the hype. Go and read On The Shortness of Life by Seneca instead. Also, the narrator tried so hard to be stoic that has was monotonous and hard to even follow at 2X speed.

These Russians wrote stories way ahead of their time. there is so much going on and they are so vast that they are better suited to modern TV series.

it was enjoyable, but so long that it took me about 8 months to get through. it's nothing life changing. the narrator was absolutely amazing and I will be looking for more of her works.

I didn't hate it, but I don't feel like I got much out of it, as I have with his other books. of course it doesn't help that Alan couldn't record this one.
it just felt like a mishmash of quotations eventually.

I really struggled to listen to this garbage. there was some decent science in there, and there were a couple good points. but it's mostly pat yourself on the back bull. if you want to understand how to live, go read philosophy. if you want to heal from trauma, go read The Body Keeps The Score. if you want to understand the brain, go listen to Andrew Huberman's podcast.

and the voice actress sounded like she was reading a children's book.

it's ok if you don't know anything about the brain.
some good insights, but repetitive as hell.

Modern man doesn't pay enough attention to philosophy, the art and science of how to live well.
Yet we need it more than ever...

Derren has brilliantly introduced the core concepta of ancient philosophy, in an easy to digest form for the modern reader.

As an avid reader of philosophy, I was not sure I would get much from it, but he brought a ton of extra value to the table.
10/10, he has written another life changing book. I say another, because Tricks of the Mind changed the course of my life, many years ago.

it's perfect except that with modern software, it would be so easy to get rid of the horrible hissing noises and stuff. and the 20 seconds of jingle between chapters was annoying and unnecessary.

I don't believe I could have finished this book if it was not passively coming into my ears from Jeremy Irons, as an audiobook. I don't think I could have forced myself past the first few pages.
It's amazingly well written, but the first person excitement of a pedophile brought out more disgust in me than the vivid accounts of Nazi executions and tortures I have read about. At least none of those accounts were in the first person, of the rare guards who actually delighted in their savagery.

It gives a good look into the life and times of Seneca, touching on some of his philosophy, and how and when he used it or ignored it, in his own life.
Will read again.

It's a literal copy paste of Seneca's letters from other books. So disappointing. I thought it would have anything to tie Seneca to the Tao (which is pronounced heretically wrong in the book).
