A lot of yarn but no thread
Revisado: 03-25-25
I thought maybe I was missing something but reading other reviews made me realize I wasn’t. I like Mark, his work is solid. Will have to listen to it again to piece it together better but maybe I’ll wait for the next book to come out to try and make sense out of it.

Good story, bad mix
Revisado: 08-23-24
Had to really crank up the headphones to even hear the narrator. He does what some narrators do like they’re talking next to a room of light sleeping infants. His voice often got drowned out by any exterior noise. Performance was good but overly somber throughout even during periods where the characters were experiencing heightened emotion.

A slow burner
Revisado: 08-10-24
After writing such a successful action packed series like The Expanse it was at first off putting to listen to a story that moves so slowly. It’s definitely a departure from their previous work but that’s not at all a bad thing. I’m looking forward to seeing how the next book will be.

Historia
From the acclaimed military historian, a new history of the outbreak of World War I: the dramatic stretch from the breakdown of diplomacy to the battles - the Marne, Ypres, Tannenberg - that marked the frenzied first year before the war bogged down in the trenches. In Catastrophe 1914, Max Hastings gives us a conflict different from the familiar one of barbed wire, mud, and futility.

Humanity in brutality
Revisado: 12-09-22
Hastings does a very good job in bringing forward many human viewpoints and quotations into what is normally taught only at a macro political level. Sometimes goes into the weeds a bit and my focus would waver but that’s just my opinion, your mileage may vary. More than worth your time and Simon Vance is a top notch narrator for this type of material.
