Historia
In the early 2000s, after years of hard work and determination to breakthrough as an actor, Bethany Joy Lenz was finally cast as one of the leads on the hit drama One Tree Hill. Her career was about to take off, but her personal life was slowly beginning to unravel. What none of the show’s millions of fans knew, hidden even from her costars, was her secret double life in a cult. An only child who always wanted a place to belong, Lenz found the safe haven she’d been searching for in a Bible study group with other Hollywood creatives. However, the group soon morphed into something more sinister.

Historia
No company embodied American ingenuity, innovation, and industrial power more spectacularly and more consistently than the General Electric Company. GE once developed and manufactured many of the inventions we take for granted today, nearly everything from the lightbulb to the jet engine. GE also built a cult of financial and leadership success envied across the globe and became the world’s most valuable and most admired company. But even at the height of its prestige and influence, cracks were forming in its formidable foundation.

Historia
Ever since he was a kid, kicking broken soccer balls on the run-down streets of East London, Gary Stevenson dreamed of something bigger. As luck would have it, he was good at numbers. At the London School of Economics, wearing tracksuits and sneakers, Stevenson shocked his posh classmates by winning a competition called “The Trading Game.” The prize? A golden ticket to a new life, as the youngest trader at Citibank.

Loved it
Revisado: 06-20-24
Appreciated the roller coaster ride of his life, from instant success to wrestling with emptiness. As a man I can relate to the different feelings, and highs and lows of his life. I appreciated his honesty and vulnerability in sharing his internal struggles, and trying to find meaning and purpose.
Authors voice was hard to follow at first, then soon grew comfortable with it, then before long began to like it! Just needed to hear used to his accent.
Loved the story!

Historia
The hour is critical. The American republic is suffering its gravest crisis since the Civil War. Conflicts, hostility, and incivility now threaten to tear the country apart. Competing visions have led to a dangerous moment of cultural self-destruction. This is no longer politics as usual, but an era of political warfare where our enemies are not foreign adversaries, but our fellow citizens. Yet the roots of the crisis are deeper than many realize. Os Guinness argues that we face a fundamental crisis of freedom, as America's genius for freedom has become her Achilles' heel.

Historia
Evangelical Christians are perhaps the most polarizing—and least understood—people living in America today. In his seminal new book, The Kingdom, the Power, and the Glory, journalist Tim Alberta, himself a practicing Christian and the son of an evangelical pastor, paints an expansive and profoundly troubling portrait of the American evangelical movement.

Excellent!
Revisado: 04-20-24
Having grown up in the church and being an avid Christian till about 2018.. Tim put into words so many of the experiences and feelings that I processed over those years. It is apparent that a significant amount of research was completed to put this together. And from my perspective care was taken to present with as little bias as possible. Listening to this helps me understand my journey. Thank you Tim.

Historia
In 2017, a routine network television investigation led to a story only whispered about: one of Hollywood’s most powerful producers was a predator, protected by fear, wealth, and a conspiracy of silence. As Farrow drew closer to the truth, shadowy operatives, from high-priced lawyers to elite war-hardened spies, mounted a secret campaign of intimidation, threatening his career, following his every move, and weaponizing an account of abuse in his own family.

too slow for me
Revisado: 01-25-24
book may have potential if half the length.. I made it almost half-way in, and quit. way too much time spent on detail and tangents, which seem to contribute nothing to the story. i kept hoping it would draw me in, but could take no more.
Hannah's book 'The Great Alone' was one of best stories i have read.. for me, this didn't come close.

Too slow and too long-winded
Revisado: 01-25-24
Interesting topic and i think i could have enjoyed it if it were 1/3 the length. story goes way too deep in giving what feels like a life story as background for each of the participants... i made it about a third of the way through and could no longer handle it and returned the book.

Historia
When a mass shooter killed five people in an LGBTQ nightclub in Colorado Springs, grieving people graffitied James Dobson's Focus on the Family headquarters with the words "Their blood is on your hands." Such an accusation comes as no surprise to Amber Cantorna-Wylde, whose father is a Focus on the Family executive and cast Amber out of her family when she came out in 2012.

Raw, Honest, heartfelt
Revisado: 01-06-24
I appreciate Amber's honesty and vulnerability in sharing her difficult journey from a 'Focus' upbringing to finding her true self and be able to live unashamed, with dignity and confidence. I was born in '62, and grew-up in tight religious (Mennonite) faith community (aligned w Focus teachings), and in recent years have left the church (and belief in god) as i could no longer be part of a community that seemed to me to be using scripture (and authority of god) to advance their desires at the expense of people (like Amber) on the margins... I have a younger brother who committed suicide when I was 15.. to this day, i wonder if he struggled with something that was unacceptable in our family, and the church, that he couldn't share with others...
A valuable part of my recent journey has been a commitment to reading the stories of those who are different or on the margins, to hopefully help is see how much we all share the same yearnings and desires, and to make the world a safer, more inclusive and loving place. Thank you Amber for helping us all along that path.
