Sexy, sometimes silly fun
Revisado: 01-11-16
Would you recommend Jezebel, Daughter of Darkness to your friends? Why or why not?
Sure. It actually reminded me a little of Lost Girl. I liked the idea of a succubus trying to help humans with their issues. I'm interested in the upcoming parts as well.
Which character – as performed by Nina Sumter – was your favorite?
Alex :P I always love her flamboyant male characters.
Any additional comments?
This was a fun story. I liked the premise, though honestly, I was more interested in Jezebel helping the humans with their problems than I was with all of the paranormal creatures and Jezebel's family. I did find the fantastical creatures interesting, especially the BEK. The comment about them sounding like the name of a band was also pretty funny.
Some things were silly and cliche, like, "Vlad is your father!" I laughed. I also saw the twist at the end coming.
I love the effort Nina puts into all of her characters, especially the accents. I found all of the characters to be believable.

Pointless, sounds like a teenager's first draft
Revisado: 08-20-15
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
I would absolutely not recommend this book to anyone I like. This should be prescribed as punishment.
What was most disappointing about S.M. Knowles’s story?
What was the point?! The book dragged on about how sad and mopey the main character was that her dad had gone off to Afghanistan. It's not until she FALLS INTO A BUS that it starts to get somewhat interesting, and even then it sounded like the author didn't know where her own story was going. Mysterious stuff started happening, and oh, is that the main character's dad's voice? NO! It's the voice of a teenage girl, who's speaking directly to the main character's head because the main character is friends with the guy the witch wants to bang! How can a girl who's so close to her dad mistake a teenage girl's voice for her dad's voice?
This is just the beginning of the main character's stupidity. Like I said, she falls into a bus. She's also a terrible person and contradicts herself. She says that she doesn't want to make people worry about her, and then she does something stupid like lying to her best friend that she's not going to the winter formal, simply because she finds it funny that her best friend is so upset about it. She also muses, "Ohh, WHAT is this mysterious stuff that's happening?!" as if to play up the supernatural element, but all it does it make her look even more stupid.
There are also some pretty weird metaphors, like trees swaying like sad children whose toys were taken away.
I was waiting for something exciting to happen, but all I got in the end was nonsense trying to sound profound. Even the "antagonist" had a weak motivation. Much of the plot sounded like an afterthought and none of it was developed thoroughly. It seemed as though the author wanted to write a heartwarming family story, then kept adding on elements that only added confusion to the plot.
Which character – as performed by Heidi Tabing – was your favorite?
I think I like the mom the best. There was one scene toward the end where the main character confronts her mom about being absent after dad had left. That scene was the saving grace that led me to rate the story two stars instead of one.
The narrator has a soothing, rather expressive way of narrating the book. I also liked how she voiced the twins. For the most part, her narration kept me engaged in the nonexistent plot, though there were a few times it sounded as if she was bored with narrating the pointless story. Those parts, however, were written pretty blandly in the first place.
Was Unusual Awakening worth the listening time?
No. It kept me somewhat entertained during my work day, but most of the time I wondered, "WHAT is happening in this story?!"
Any additional comments?
The author needs to work on her craft. I am appalled that this was published. Most of it sounded like something a junior high or high school student would write.

Side story way more engaging than main plot
Revisado: 08-20-15
Would you try another book from Cassie Alexandra and/or Nina Sumter?
Cassie Alexandra showed some promise in her book, but unfortunately, I felt that the romance overshadowed the more interesting aspects of the book. Nina Sumter, on the other hand, is absolutely amazing.
What does Nina Sumter bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Nina is excellent at providing voices for both male and female characters. It was a rather large cast, especially with all of the bikers. Some of the bikers' voices did sound a bit silly, but I applaud her for giving them distinct voices. The other comment about Nina being the worst narrator ever is rubbish.
Nina made some of the scenes, especially with Adriana's mother, much more emotionally engaging.
Any additional comments?
I was quite engaged with a rather deadly subplot involving drugs, a kidnapping, and a double murder, and I was even glad that the story had taken the turn. However, after the funeral, I felt that the situation had gone unresolved and it focused more on the romance between Adriana and Trevor. At that point, the story dragged on too long, and I thought that the characters talking about getting hitched was eye-roll-worthy. I never found the romance to be believable.

Typical Eye-Rolling Cheesiness
Revisado: 05-13-15
Would you try another book from Maggie Marr and/or Nina Sumter?
I would absolutely love to hear Nina narrate another book, but if this book is representative of Maggie's other work, I'll pass.
What was most disappointing about Maggie Marr’s story?
The beginning of the book showed promise about being insightful on the entertainment industry, but as soon as Lane and Dillon began a relationship, it quickly went downhill into typical jealousy, puppy love, and moping. It has all the tropes and cliches of contemporary romance. There's the staple club scene in which he gets jealous. He thinks she's too pure and perfect for her. He's a jerk in the beginning but she manages to break through his hard exterior. Not to mention all of the sexual cliches I've heard in every book. The guy gets hard in every scene, always has to mention, "You're so tight, you're so wet." She always comments, "You're so big, you're never going to fit!" They each become their everything, and she becomes his drug. I'm probably not the right audience for this, but I do NOT find it attractive when a man can't control his sexual addiction and even resorts to thinking about locking up a woman so no one else can touch her.
My favorite character has to be Choo, and I especially love how Nina portrayed him. He was especially likable, but the downside is that I felt like he was a huge cliche.
The entire last half of the book tried too hard to make the reader want Lane and Dillon to be together. I started off not minding either way, but once Lane became mopey and jealous, I was wishing they wouldn't be together. I felt like their experiences didn't merit such overdramatic, long, drawn-out scenes in which they were longing for each other.
As for the ending, in which--as if he isn't creepy enough--Dillion follows Lane back to Kansas and proposes to her, I literally exclaimed, "OH MY GOD, ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!" I'm sure others would find this crazy romantic, but I thought it was ridiculous and juvenile.
What about Nina Sumter’s performance did you like?
Nina has an amazing ability to switch from female to male voices flawlessly. Lane and Dillion's voices were especially distinct, and she even added an extra flair to minor characters to distinguish them from the others. As I said above, her performance with Choo was fabulous and made him even more likable.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
Nope.
Any additional comments?
The story is formulaic, the characters are often-seen cliches, the emotion is juvenile. It's a typical contemporary romance and you get exactly what you expect. I guess the sex scenes were okay.
