Historia
In this powerful audiobook, pastor, professor, and leading cultural apologist Voddie Baucham explains the sinister worldview behind the social justice movement and how it has quietly spread like a fault system, not only through our culture, but throughout the evangelical church in America. He also details the devastation it is already wreaking - and what we can do to get back on solid ground before it’s too late.

one side of the story
Revisado: 03-04-24
I think it is important to hear from this side of the Fault Line. Even after reading this book, I am not convinced that Baucham is achieving the right balance to strike on issues of racial unity. I am convinced that CRT is a dangerous idea with Marxist roots. How to promote (and prioritize) racial unity and reconciliation, but do so while avoiding getting accused of employing CRT by Baucham, Ascot, MacArthur, et al.... that's another question.

It turns out giving up your "right" to be offended can be one of the most freeing, healthy, simplifying, relaxing, refreshing, stress-relieving, encouraging things you can do. It's a radical, provocative idea: We're not entitled to get offended or stay angry. The idea of our own "righteous anger" is a myth. It is the number one problem in our societies today and, as Dallas Willard says, Christians have not been taught out of it. But what if Christians were the most unoffendable people on the planet?

Fine content, just no epicenter. Easy read, but it's all over the place. Apparently a book about being unoffendable is a book about everything.

Historia
When a Victorian scientist propels himself into the year 802,701 AD, he is initially delighted to find that suffering has been replaced by beauty, contentment and peace. Entranced at first by the Eloi, an elfin species descended from man, he soon realises that this beautiful people are simply remnants of a once-great culture - now weak and childishly afraid of the dark. But they have every reason to be afraid: in deep tunnels beneath their paradise lurks another race descended from humanity - the sinister Morlocks.

Read for cultural relevancy
Revisado: 12-19-22
H.G. Wells is not my favorite author, but this dystopia came recommended. It was worth the time I spent on it, but not more. It's pretty forgettable, not the cultural touchstone of other entries in the genre.

Good for a diversion, but that's it
Revisado: 12-12-22
Jack Higgins is to WW2 Europe what Louis L'Amour is to western, churned out a lot of readable, shoot 'em up stories, the differences between which get blurry the more of them you read. This one was okay, but quite predictable. One nice little twist at the very end.

Historia
In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue - Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is - she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.

A worthwhile listen
Revisado: 01-19-22
I am a fan of the dystopian science fiction genre, so I'm not hard to please. I did enjoy the world that the author created. The conflicts were believable, and the characters were somewhat well-developed. There was a lot of brutalism, a lot of violence, a lot of bruises (it seemed like Tris was almost never free from bruises or soreness), and maybe that's par for the Dauntless course, but it seemed overplayed. Not for the squeamish. But I never lost interest in the story, and it held me all the way to the end.

Great for history and philosophy geeks
Revisado: 06-03-21
Oversold to me, but very insightful. By the end of the book, I felt like I had a much better understanding of the transgender movement and the sexual revolution more broadly. I was never fully informed how the historic ideas of the elites made the jump into the modern cultural imaginary of American street walkers, but okay. I'll buy the argument.
