Historia
My name's Griz. I've never been to school, I've never had friends, and in my whole life I've not met enough people to play a game of football. My parents told me how crowded the world used to be, before all the people went away. But we were never lonely on our remote island. We had each other and our dogs. Then the thief came.

Not what I’d expected. And that’s a good surprise.
Revisado: 07-25-20
There were moments when I didn’t want what was clearly about to happen to happen at all. Painful moments. Turns in the tale that were both unexpected and heartbreaking. In the end, the unexpected made for an ending I was happy to experience.
I’m not a huge fan of post apocalyptic stories. This had the benefit of long and mostly undocumented time spans.
There was much I did not expect and I’m glad of that.
I recommend it.
Good characters. Not too many (of course - it’s the end of the world, after all). And I love the dogs.
And Brand is complex enough that we care about him as much as Griz.
And as mentioned, the surprises: I didn’t see them coming. Maybe you will, but I’m very happy with them.
I’ll be buying this as a gift sometimes, I can tell, as I’ve done with Greyhound and Ordinary Grace.

Long, yes, but not too long.
Revisado: 06-26-20
I put off listening to this one based on bad reviews, but of all the Penn Cage books so far, this may really be my favorite. Such a complex story. So many characters. A lot of pain and suffering, but a good long listen.

From Martin Clark - praised by Entertainment Weekly as "our best legal-thriller writer" - comes a wickedly clever, tenderhearted, and intricately plotted novel about a hard-luck lawyer's refusal to concede defeat, even as fate, the court system, and a gang of untouchable con artists conspire against him.

Smart legal drama with good characters and twists
Revisado: 04-12-20
I enjoyed this so much. A legal “thriller” without the typical thriller plot points: no murder, no violence (but thrilling throughout, regardless), and full of intrigue and what seem to be impossible odds for the protagonist from the earliest scenes. Engaging relationships, clever twists, and hard to hit pause. Much recommended.

Such an original and engaging tale
Revisado: 03-31-20
So happy I got to experience both books, especially book 2, which provided some of the most imaginative and exciting ideas about space time, multiple dimensions, community, and creation of places, spaces and characters I’ve rarely enjoyed so much.
It’s tragic that Paul just last month passed away from cancer, after he learned of the diagnosis mere months ago.
He wrote in a Facebook post, back in November or December, that a writer friend had worked with him on the plot and plans for book 3, just in case...
I hope that can happen. This author deserves to be WIDELY read, this series, especially.
Kate Reading did a fine job of narration, engaging me with every character.
I want to see these books jump the boundaries of the inexpensive Kindle book world, and find the audience that will make it a cult favorite. I want to see that popularity create the recognition income for his family that the work deserves.
Highly recommended. Bizarre and fun and almost impossible to stop reading/listening.

As good as Ordinary Grace, in the end.
Revisado: 02-20-20
This is a story broader and more complex in many ways than Ordinary Grace, and it took longer to hold my attention. Part of that was, I think, the mismatch of narrator. At least that’s what I thought at first.
I’ve loved Scott Brick’s narration in many books. This one was slow to catch on for me, maybe because his voice is so good for adult voices, and seemed a little too serious, solid, powerful for the voices of children.
I got used to it, though, and came to love these characters as I did Frank, Jake, and the others in Ordinary Grace.
There is mystery and myth, even magic in this story that grows and captures the audience. And there is love and faith amidst the terrible hard times.
It’s a beautiful story, rich in the history and geography of the region and the rivers.
I recommend it.

Historia
Award-winning author William Kent Krueger has gained an immense fan base for his Cork O’Connor series. In Ordinary Grace, Krueger looks back to 1961 to tell the story of Frank Drum, a boy on the cusp of manhood. A typical 13-year-old with a strong, loving family, Frank is devastated when a tragedy forces him to face the unthinkable - and to take on a maturity beyond his years.

Beautiful, human story, filled with heart and mystery.
Revisado: 02-11-20
I just finished this book for the second time. First time was 5 years ago, about the same time of year. Enough space between made this experience even richer, because I remembered just enough to find the characters familiar, while forgetting enough detail to be deeply interested in the story again.
Characters are pretty well developed, according to their places in the story, and the setting made me nostalgic for the past world of small town familiarity, churches, shops, and neighbors.
It’s a moving story with mystery and heart in appropriate measure. I was never bored in either listening, and I know it would be an excellent paper or e-read, too. The writing is clean and human, decent, and engaging.
It would be a fine movie, too.
Highly recommended.

Nothing ever changes in Sanders. The town's still got a video store, for God's sake. So why doesn't Eli Teague want to leave? Not that he'd ever admit it, but maybe he's been waiting - waiting for the traveler to come back. The one who's roared into his life twice before, pausing just long enough to drop tantalizing clues before disappearing in a cloud of gunfire and a squeal of tires. The one who's a walking anachronism, with her tricorne hat, flintlock rifle, and steampunked Model A Ford.

They must have an even shorter attention span than I’ve been accused of having over the years. This is an excellent, imaginative, very fresh story worth every minute and credit. I enjoyed it every bit as much as 14 and The Fold.

Raised in the historic southern splendor of Natchez, Mississippi, Penn Cage learned all he knows of honor and duty from his father, Dr. Tom Cage. But now the beloved family doctor has been accused of murdering Viola Turner, the African-American nurse with whom he worked in the dark days of the 1960s. Penn is determined to save his father, but Tom, stubbornly invoking doctor-patient privilege, refuses to even speak in his own defense.

The best narration so far!
Revisado: 05-04-17
This was a really long book, and I like long books. This one could have been a little shorter in places, but it continued the Penn Cage saga very well, with more suspense and dire situations than ever.
I recommend it as a continuation of the series.
Unlike some other reviewers, I think David Ledoux was exceptional. His reading was even. It was not theatrical. It has integrity in its consistency, and I really appreciated that after two books read by Dick Hill.
Not that Hill isn't a fine reader. He is. But I disliked his work on this series. It varied in pitch and volume to an annoying degree. Some voices were so shrill I had to turn the volume down, then the next lines would be spoken so softly I couldn't hear them. The two readings made for a collectively unpleasant audio experience, the first of which I felt so strongly about since joining Audible in 2001.
I'd like to hear more from Mr. Ledoux.
I've certainly enjoyed the books and the stories of Mississippi woven into them.
