Structure is tedious
Revisado: 04-11-25
Using what’s-app, emails, etc communication as the structure made this so repetitive that the clues and mystery got buried. The characters were also not really all that believable - esp Gem and Gella - so annoying.

Subtle and real
Revisado: 04-03-25
The narrator’s voice was really soothing. The story was as much an homage to the narrator’s mother and her mother’s kind nurturing ways as anything. Wise women both mother and daughter. Loved it!

Historia
Everyone expected Violet Sorrengail to die during her first year at Basgiath War College-Violet included. But Threshing was only the first impossible test meant to weed out the weak-willed, the unworthy, and the unlucky. Now the real training begins, and Violet’s already wondering how she’ll get through. It’s not just that it’s grueling and maliciously brutal, or even that it’s designed to stretch the riders’ capacity for pain beyond endurance. It’s the new vice commandant, who’s made it his personal mission to teach Violet exactly how powerless she is–unless she betrays the man she loves.

Meh…too much fighting ugh
Revisado: 03-23-25
The fights between V & R were silly and went on and on 😏 Also, the descriptions of the battles dragged on, too. The narrator’s voice has the most annoying edge. Story is good.

Historia
Eighty-one-year-old widow Maggie Burkhardt came to the Royal Karnak to escape. But not in quite the same way as most other guests who are relaxing at this hotel on the banks of the Nile. Maggie, a compulsive fixer of other people’s lives, may have found herself in hot water at her last hotel in Switzerland and just might have needed to get out of there fast. But here at the Royal Karnak, under the hot Saharan sun, she has a comfortable suite, a loyal confidante in the hotel manager, Ahmed, and a handful of sympathetic friends. One morning, however, Maggie notices a new arrival at check-in.

Much ado about a so-so book
Revisado: 02-05-25
There was so much chatter about this book I really thought it would be a good read. It was just ok, honestly. The story was not really all that predictable but when all the reveals happen so close to the end, it feel’s gimmicky.

Love the connection to historical events
Revisado: 01-20-25
Good story, good narration (if a little too nasally at times - not too distracting though!). Love the Brits and their peculiar class traditions. I figured out the end long before the story ended so this was more about how the characters got there - nice read. I would want to live in a world with these characters.

Meet Jessica Jones: retired superhero, private investigator, loner. She tried her best to be a shiny spandex crimefighter, but that life only led to unspeakable trauma. Now she avoids that world altogether and works on surviving day-to-day in Hell’s Kitchen, New York. The morning a distraught mother comes into her office, Jessica would prefer to nurse her hangover and try to forget last night’s poor choices. But something about Amber Randall’s story strikes a chord with her. Amber is adamant that something happened to her teenage twins while they were visiting their father in the UK.

These stories work better as movies or comics
Revisado: 01-05-25
The narrator’s voice was actually sort of punishing at times - I think because of the sharp, repetitive tone. Also, her accents were meh - not horrible but they felt fake. The story was ok but too predictable to really sustain high interest. I love the character (JJ) and her rough-around-the-edges trauma survivor vibe.

First of all the narrator was SUPERB. The story was a little complicated in parts but this is what made it interesting. The protagonist was a cheeky girl who surprised me all the way through.

Historia
For decades, Sandra Brown’s life has been intertwined with someone she has never met: an eleven year-old girl named Moira Anderson – who disappeared from their hometown of Coatbridge, Scotland, in 1957. It became one of the oldest cold cases in Scottish history. Sandra lived just around the corner from Moira. She grew up hearing about the missing girl, whose memory haunted the town. But she never imagined that, one day, she would be the one trying to uncover what happened. Or that her search for answers would reveal secrets and lies so close to home.

Ugh so dragged out
Revisado: 07-18-24
First of all, unless you’re Scottish, it’s really hard to understand most of the clips interspersed between narrations (so from
The pov of the production, I would have suggested NOT using those clips). Secondly, this could really have been 1-2 episodes, NOT 9. I’m all for creating suspense by setting up events but every set up was a let down. The bigger, more interesting story might be how a culture of abuse could have existed (and still does exist in many places in the world) so openly. Why does this happen and why aren’t children better protected!? I’d like to hear from the other women - like Mary, the narrator’s mother - who, for probably good reasons, felt they could not come forward and put these disgusting pedophiles in jail for life. Or your father’s aunt!? WT actual f*ck!! It sounds like he (Alec) may have been abused - which does not excuse his behavior but may explain it a bit? I’m so sorry this happened to you and you show such courage by tenaciously dogging your own father all those years but that story could have been a lot shorter, more condensed, more concise.

Revisado: 01-10-24
I’ve never met more vapid characters. A couple that has been together since they were 16 but can’t tell anything about each other? Implausible and annoying. Readers are smarter than that.
