Historia
For a thousand years the ash fell and no flowers bloomed. For a thousand years the Skaa slaved in misery and lived in fear. For a thousand years the Lord Ruler, the "Sliver of Infinity," reigned with absolute power and ultimate terror, divinely invincible. Then, when hope was so long lost that not even its memory remained, a terribly scarred, heart-broken half-Skaa rediscovered it in the depths of the Lord Ruler's most hellish prison.

Masterful tale and performance
Revisado: 04-12-25
Well fleshed out world and characters. I’m looking forward to many more books from this author. The narrator, who I’m familiar with from other books, was great as always.

Those who don’t know history are doomed to repeat it.
Revisado: 02-13-25
Excellent historical fiction on the eugenics movement that started here in the United States and moved to Germany to be “perfected” in the Nazi regime. That’s right - we were the first. And anyone who thinks this ideology no longer exists only needs to look at the life of Margaret Sanger and her plans to wipe out the negro race through abortion. Planned Parenthood is the product of that plan. Let that sink in.

As a midwife and healer, she is privy to much of what goes on behind closed doors in Hallowell. Her diary is a record of every birth and death, crime and debacle that unfolds in the close-knit community. Months earlier, Martha documented the details of an alleged rape committed by two of the town’s most respected gentlemen—one of whom has now been found dead in the ice.

Interesting story
Revisado: 10-31-24
I found this to have a slight modern feminist tone, which I didn’t care for. Also, why do some narrators think they have to read stories in this sort of breathless, intense, almost whisper?? Didn’t like that either. Overall though, it was an interesting story with a good main character and storyline. I’m not sorry I listened to it and would recommend.

Very interesting story about black culture. I enjoyed this love story very much, but I believe I wouldn’t have enjoyed it half as much without the narrator. She was absolutely phenomenal.

Interesting Fable
Revisado: 10-09-24
Let me preface this review by saying - I really did not like the narration. I think, with a different reader, I would’ve given this five stars overall as it was very well written with good characters and enough tension to keep me very interested in the story. I do recommend it, especially if you like the fantasy genre. And perhaps you will like the narrator!

The last thing Gwen Cooper wanted was another cat. She already had two, not to mention a phenomenally underpaying job and a recently broken heart. Then Gwen’s veterinarian called with a story about a three-week-old eyeless kitten who’d been abandoned. It was love at first sight.

I’m a cat lover, having owned cats all my life, and the author is very good at capturing the wonderful world of cat personalities and adventures while still involving their humans’ lives and adventures as well. The narration was excellent.

Inspiring story with a great narrator
Revisado: 09-23-24
It is hard to imagine in our cynical world that you can go through something like this and come out the other side having an even stronger faith in God. So many use suffering as an excuse not to believe. Satan is a great deceiver. My husband and I listened to this book as we drove back and forth to my cancer treatments, and it was terrible, frightening, poignant, funny at times (she has a great sense of humor), and very inspirational. The narrator read it as though she was Darlene herself and made the story come to life. Highly recommended!

Needed a male reader
Revisado: 07-10-24
Typical Christian historical romance, so if you enjoy that sort of thing, I think you’ll like this. However, it really could’ve used a male and female reader. There were a lot of strong male characters in the book, and the female reader, while having a pleasant voice, was not suited to male character voices. I found that distracting and it decreased my enjoyment of the story.

Historia
Though they've lived their entire lives less than five blocks from each other, Reuven Malter and Danny Saunders exist in very different worlds. Reuven blends easily into both his secular Jewish faith and his typical American teen life, while Danny's conservative Hasidic clothes and appearance make him stick out in any crowd. Their improbable friendship teaches them that the differences separating people through cultures and generations are never as great as they seem.
