It has always seemed that Sofia was a bad ass, going in power book by book... Then we hit "The Elemental War" and she became a complete weak piece of shit. I'm struggling to finish. Her boyfriend gaslights her and apologizes. She learns how to cope from her spirit grandparents then 5 mins later is overcome in battle and nearly raped then when her boyfriend takes care of the would be rapist she becomes catatonic and is sent home... I want to kill Sofia myself at this point....

This is all very disappointing because I've quite liked the story so far.

I have to start this review by stating that I wrote this review when I was only half way through. If my opinion changes I will modify my review.

That said, I've read over 100 of the books in the Kurtherian Gambit Universe. I have loved all of them so much. I saw that there was a boxed set for the first four in this branch (Ascension Myth). I bought it and the first book really wasn't very good but I had bought the boxed-set so I read all four. I didn't care for books two or three either but book four seemed to be a bit better and I was optimistic. I bought book five with much hope. However Molly and her team are irritating. What was the author thinking... let’s build a kick ass team and then hamper them with the attitude of peace loving hippies. It seems this crew should form a commune and become pacifists, I mean they are pretty much there already meditation… and non-lethal aggression (kind of pointless). I’m very glad I didn’t start with this branch series of the Kurtherian Gambit Universe, I would’ve never read any of the others.

The characters are weaker versions of Bethany Ann and the Bitches, only rather then kicking ass they should hold hands a sing Kumbaya. I can say at this point I pretty much hate this crew and unless the second half of the book is completely different then this will be the last Ascension Myth book I read, it might be the last Ell Leigh Clarke book I read, but I did think that The Second Dark Ages was an ok read. So time will tell on that one.

Bottom line: If you like other books in the KG Universe you might want to skip this series.

while I've enjoyed the series I found the constant phrase of "God doesn't make mistakes..." quite annoying. If I'm honest it was a struggle to keep listening. None of the other books had this underlying ideology. Every time it came up I wanted to throw my phone across the room. We get it the author is obviously religious, but please stop hitting us in the head about it. If god doesn't make mistakes the he/she/it has a lot of explaining to do.

I liked the story, but to be honest it felt very derivative. At some points along the way I almost expected some character or another to say "May the force be with you". I belive the author felt this way as well as there were several allusions to the movie.

Apparently only Christians are smart enough to survive and every single person who is not a Christian is a sexually perverted marauder/ looter. That is when the story is moving forward at all, mostly it's just a meticulous list of gear. By the way is there anything that "the group" has need of. I guess it's nice to have everything. Given the preachy stance of the book it should be listed in the religious section.

I gave it one star because I couldn't give it less. I'd not recommend this book to anyone.

I don't usually write reviews however after having just finished the book I'm reeling with emotion. (the sign of a good tale). I have to warn you that even though you get the "happy ending" you are left with a since of profound sadness (or at least I was).

Not that I didn't love the book. I really did. Unfortunately I didn't realize that it was abridged. I suppose that is my own fault, but if you are thinking of buying be sure you know that your only buying about half of the book.

Feeling robbed,
Holly
