Fabulous story-telling that weaves in personal details against a history that we all need to know about.

Excellent narration also!

More policy than I hoped

This is an important topic, and I think Jo Ann Jenkins does a good job of highlighting many substantial issues about aging today. But t
he second half of the book deals mainly with policy issues. I guess this is typical for the CEO of AARP -- that she should use her platform to urge policy changes in aging. But I was hoping for more personal tips on living my own life.

"Quiet" was a terrific book, and I recommend it to both introverts, who want to understand themselves better, but also to extroverts, who often judge introverted behaviors as "shy" or "lacking initiative," when really they/we don't understand the behavior's basis -- and further, how having an introvert on their team can really help them.

The author uses interesting case studies to illustrate her points and hold your attention, and the narrator does a good job to bring this non-fiction book to life.

I found the subject relevant to social relationships, work issues and parenting. I wish I had known some of these things when my kids were younger!

Buy this book and give it to your introverted and your extroverted friends.

Southern classic, well-performed

Will Patton does an excellent job with this Southern classic, as he narrates the story with appropriate accents and a pace that goes along with the unhurried pace of the protagonist's journey. A wonderful way to re-acquaint yourself with a famous work, or to explore it for the first time.

Good info but boring narration

I enjoyed the content of this book, and I liked the various anecdotes and illustrations. However, it is fairly heavy on the Jungian concepts and jargon, so at times it seemed rather abstract and hard to follow on an audio basis.

Also, the narrator has an even, expression-less style that perhaps is useful because it conveys no judgment -- but it also conveys no excitement or interest. Indeed, my player (the Audible app for iPhone) would go right from one chapter into the next without even a pause.

Perhaps would be better to read in print?

Great message but too much social science jargon

This book has a great title, and an excellent message with good stories of individuals who have "reinvented" themselves in midlife. But I pretty much got the point after about 3 chapters and wasn't sure what value was being added by making the book longer. Also, the social science language and vocab kind of got on my nerves after awhile.

Narrator has some odd pronunciations, e.g. "pedagogy." But overall, a good message, if you can ignore some of the academic aspects of the book.

Would you listen to Beautiful Ruins again? Why?

I enjoyed listening to Beautiful Ruins -- a nice story for audiobook where you could usually tell what time and place you were in, despite the movement of the narrative across continents and years. I didn't consider it a "masterpiece" and would not listen to it a second time, but I was definitely glad to listen to it.

I found it well-performed and paced, and at no point did I consider "putting it down," one of my personal barometers of how good an audiobook is.

Any additional comments?

This is a good book to "read" as an audiobook -- you can enjoy the story, and you don't need to see it in print to understand, or go back to refresh your memory of a complicated plot.
