Historia
The 1980s were a transformative decade for the NBA. Since its founding in 1946, the league had evolved from a bruising, earthbound game of mostly nameless, underpaid players to one in which athletes became household names for their thrilling, physics-defying play. The 1987–88 season was the peak of that golden era, a year of incredible drama that featured a pantheon of superstars in their prime—the most future Hall of Famers competing at one time in any given season—battling for the title, and for their respective legacies.

Great for any Basketball fan
Revisado: 05-27-24
I grew up in the 1980s and enjoyed watching Bird, Magic, Jordan, and others. This book examines those players and their teams in an interesting way. The interviews and information collected by the author are all enjoyable. The author also did a good job of reminding me about the talent of Isiah Thomas. As a Bulls fan in the 1990s and coming off of the recent "The Last Dance" miniseries, I had come to remember Thomas as someone who was decent but mostly a poor sport when the Pistons were finally overtaken by the Bulls, This book does a good job of giving Thomas his due along with all of the other stars of the time--enough to make me realize that my memory of Thomas was not fair and that he really was an amazing star in his own way. The stories about Bird, Magic, Jordan, and others are all what I expected. The story about Isiah Thomas was not what I expected, but I enjoyed it and the book made me think of him differently, which I appreciate.

Historia
From the moment he set foot on it, Karl Rove has rocked Americas political stage. He ran the national College Republicans at 22, and turned a Texas dominated by Democrats into a bastion for Republicans. He launched George W. Bush to national renown by unseating a popular Democratic governor, and then orchestrated a GOP White House win at a time when voters had little reason to throw out the incumbent party.

A bit too “brief” without connective tissue
Revisado: 12-14-23
He is clearly very smart and the book includes some interesting facts, but it was more like bullet-point topics than an overarching narrative. It did seem to get better as it moved along. But overall, it was very “meh”. He is a very good reader of the book, however.

Historia
Francis Parkman's journal - written more than 150 years ago, in 1846 - provides an eye-witness account of one of the grandest adventures in American history. At age 23, the Harvard-educated Bostonian traveled the Rocky Mountains, living among the Dakota Sioux. In his journal, he captured the color, spirit, and perspective of his era, as well as the exuberant confidence that was the mark of his time. Frank Muller's dramatic reading brings this captivating record to life.

An interesting historical account

An interesting recollection of a few months traveling West from St. Louis in the 1840s. It does give context into what it was really like for the travelers back then.

Historia
When Forrest Fenn was given a fatal cancer diagnosis, he came up with a bold plan: He would hide a chest full of jewels and gold in the wilderness, and publish a poem that would serve as a map leading to the treasure's secret location. But he didn't die, and after hiding the treasure in 2010, Fenn instead presided over a decade-long gold rush that saw many thousands of treasure hunters scrambling across the Rocky Mountains in pursuit of his fortune.

Slow beginning but it gets better as you go
Revisado: 01-04-23
For the first 30% of the book, I was a bit disappointed as the approach to the story was not at all what I had expected. However, as I continued on I found I was more interested in the final outcome each successive chapter. I feel like the payoff was worth it in the end and I was sad the book was over--so clearly I came around to the story and the author's approach. So this book went from what was initially seemed like 2-3 stars up to 5 stars. I'd recommend it to any reader who finds the story summary interesting.

An enjoyable analysis of a serious in our country
Revisado: 09-21-22
A very interesting and enjoyable book. While I have grown up following politics, I am saddened by the tone of the political debate over the last 10-15 years between fellow citizens and equally frustrated at how the media on both sides intentionally adds fuel to the fire. Stirewalt does a great job pointing out how assumptions across the political spectrum cause people to assume the worst about those who disagree with them. If more people read and digested the themes outlined in this book, we would have a country that is more civil, more respectful, and more focused on policy discussions to help move our country forward. I always appreciate seeing Stirewalt on TV and listening to him on various podcasts, and this book (also read by the author) does not disappoint.

Most of us have had this experience: browsing through countless options on Netflix, unable to commit to watching any given movie—and losing so much time skimming reviews and considering trailers that it’s too late to watch anything at all. In a book inspired by an idea first articulated in a viral commencement address, Pete Davis argues that this is the defining characteristic of the moment: keeping our options open. In Dedicated, Davis examines this quagmire, as well as the counterculture of committers who have made it to the other side.

Interesting, but repetitive...
Revisado: 02-08-22
The overall theme of the book is interesting, but about 75% through it seemed I had heard the same thing over and over again with similar examples across similar-themed organizations. It would have been more insightful if the author had found examples in organizations that were more varied in their purpose, theme, or political leaning. The book is 7.5 hours and I feel like 3-4 of those hours could have been trimmed out from the current content and the listener would essentially absorb the same message as the full-length book. Nevertheless, I think it had a solid beginning and I believe the last hour was interesting enough so that it was worth the wait.

Developing video games—hero's journey or fool's errand? The creative and technical logistics that go into building today's hottest games can be more harrowing and complex than the games themselves, often seeming like an endless maze or a bottomless abyss. In Blood, Sweat, and Pixels, Jason Schreier takes listeners on a fascinating odyssey behind the scenes of video game development, where the creator may be a team of 600 overworked underdogs or a solitary geek genius.
