I must admit I just listened to the whole series again for the 3rd time before this book came out and I just wanted to thank RC as well also for simply amazing narration, I fancy myself a narrator and I am working on a couple books, slowly, exploring different characters and the voices the more I do it, the more amazed I am at RCs world if characters in this series all delivered just perfectly. The subtleties are just amazing. RC you are a marvel and with this amazing work you have really been able to shine. Thanks to you both. You are truly an inspiration to me!

I am just amazed at some of the negative reviews. Sane old thing? Of course, that’s what the 95% of us who LOVE these characters to the point of missing them when they are gone. Milking it? Craig trees to end this book series 3 times. His fans keep harassing him to keep going ( myself included). And as for the action missing? This book has two of the most amazing, edge if your seat action sequences I have maybe ever read. I keep wondering how Craig could top the last one and he manages to keep doing it. And as for any woke nonsense, as one who’s quite bored with both sides of this debate, the book is suffering from woke nonsense because he has one, gay relationship in 16 books? JFC find yourself a cave so you can hide yourself from reality, and please stop making us pay for your ignorance with snotty reviews. This series is truly a marvel, and this comes from a physicist trained in science and an avid Sci breaded who has read ALL the other popular series out there, and this is the ONLY one that I went as far as buying a hat! And sure enough sone is at the gym noticed and we ended up talking for an hour about the glories of this series. Is it a bit repetitive, yes, but humans are repetitive, and reality does not follow the rules of plot development popularized in movies or single books. People don’t change that much. The only thing that bothered me in that score is Skippy still talks with such contempt for Joe and the monkies and you wish he would just grow a little beyond the brief moments of affection. But his ACTIONS speak louder than his words and shows the brilliance of Craig’s character development. Joe and Skippy are like an old couple that smile in each other continuously but I. A pinch would due for each other. They are utterly human and not idealized like most of these type of stories with hero’s that have one glaring flaw. These characters have lots of flaws. And yes the women are a bit enobled but they deserve it. They have been marginalized for centuries. Bug in the end it’s bumbling Joe Bishop and his snotty, all powerful AI that save the day. And yhd characters accept his flaws while admiring his strange genius. This story is just plain marvelous and I have read the whole thing now 3 times! The one benefit of an aging brain, you forget a lot of the details. And I LIKE the details. The arguments, The insults ( which do get a bit repetitive. ). I just like it all and now starting book 16 I will be ready for book 17 coming out in a couple weeks. I am always very disappointed when I have the abandon the pirates at the last book. I miss them in my life. Oh well. That’s the one down side to great stories. You miss them when they’re gone. Thanks Craig for a truly marvelous galaxy you have created and the endearing pirates, ( and Beetles!).

I enjoy all of Rick’s writing but I have 2 problems with this series. 1) the reader Mr. Self is using the exact same voices he used o. The John Ryan series. I know it must be difficult to come up with so many unique voices but I almost feel you need to explore another reader because it’s very weird to hear characters we know and live recreated in a similar story framework.2) I promised myself I would not buy books under 10 hours long. If that’s the story it’s one thing but in this one he split the story in two small half’s for no other reason than to make more money. I go through hundreds of books a year and it is just too much when they get down to 7 hours for a credit. IMHO. I know numerous writers that 10+ books into a series are still making books 12 hours long. It’s a matter of respect for your audience.

As a previous fan I have found Mr. Rickards insights into economics were very interesting in the past, but it’s getting to be a bit old crying the collapse is coming. The collapse is coming!!! He’s been saying the same thing for 20 years. Now it’s AI that the existential threat when in fact the real existential threat to life as we know it is the the patent foolishness that Mr Rickards politics represent. The last half of the book is a diatribe of political complaints as petty as Biden son’s laptop changing the election . On top of this he layers on a solid dose of bogus anti-vaccine statistics, and just about every Red hat talking point I could think of. Mr Rickards, as with so many truth tellers you have lost your way in a delusion of grand conspiracy and imminent threat, to the point that you will believe con men just because they say what you want to hear. I gave you two stars because half the book was interesting, the other half, just a compilation of 5 years of Red Hat greatest hits. I’m sure you’ll make big money on Truth Social with this crap, but you’ll not get another dollar out of me.

So I have enjoyed going through this book although the plots have become repetitive. The one thing that has kept me in it was my love for McGill and his selfless sacrifice over and over, and the hope that he would eventually get some appreciation from the brass. But after over a dozen books nothing changes. He just gets abused over and over with no recognition for saving the PLANETS ass over and over. So I am done. You can’t keep abusing this character we’re so fond of and keep my attention. The plots are getting weaker as well and the contempt for McGill just gets worse. Sorry, can’t watch it any more.

Not even close to Mitch Rap

Sorry. I saw some reviews here comparing this to the Rap series and it’s not even close. The great aspect of Rap is when he gets in impossible situations he figures out an incredibly clever solution that also requires stupid bravery. And he typically comes through with minor injuries. And if he’s really hurt, he doesn’t beat 4 guys in hand to hand. Gray man just is willing to take the punishment. That’s it. I saw numerous more clever options that he didn’t take. He’s NOT a great assassin from what this book shows. Just a very tough guy. I am tired of the supermen like Bourn who fall 30 feet to the ground and don’t get hurt. Or take a stab wound and still manage to fight and run. Sorry, even Mitch Rap would be sidelined with a deep stab wound and no medical attention. And btw writers. While a clean through shot from a pistol might not be life threatening, anything from a rifle is WAY more serious because of the hydrostatic shock. The entry hole could be small on for example a 223, but even if the bullet doesn’t deform, the shock wave turns a cone shaped path to mush and the damage is massive. Any bullet over 2000 fps is massively destructive even in the calf. It would blow the calf practically off. You don’t walk around after that. Just sayin.

Well I have just finished my THIRD time through the entire series (the one benefit of a failing memory) and this is my first review, ( or at least that I can remember.)
I have read a lot of reviews 99% good and even the bads and they are all right. Yes it’s a bit silly at times, yes Skippies insults can get a bit old, But these are the most interesting, fully developed, literally addictive characters of any of the top 10 series all of which I have read. And sadly, with each one I am deep inside hoping it will be as good as this one. But they never are. As a physicist I can say that while Craig conjure up some pretty fantastic science, he manages with amazing skill to never do something that we know 100% is bullshit. It’s always on the edge of our understanding or beyond so it isn’t just plain bullshit. That shows either knowledge or research. Either way he’s managed to tell a fantastic story full of fantastic science stuff without driving me crazy. With one exception:. Craig ( and all you SF authors who ALL get this wrong) lasers, masers, ANY coherent energy weapon DOES NOT inherently lose effectiveness over distance in space. Coherence can’t be perfect so any beam will diverge or converge slowly if left alone over long distances. But if a ship can control a beams with the speed and accuracy needed to blow up missies accelerating at 100 Gs, they would be capable of FOCUSING the beam. The simple act of focusing a beam makes it’s effective distance INFINITE in space if it doesn’t hit anything. And the kinds of power you mention-on the order of terrawatts would have to be focused because no transducer device could channel that kind of energy density. But regardless, if the beam is focused it will be unchanged in its effectiveness over light years. And it can focus that terrawatt in a square inch with no problem and that would vaporize anything. All the way through a ship almost instantly. Maybe this doesn’t help the story but it’s such basic physics, I don’t understand why ALL the authors get this wrong. Anyway this is a marvelous book series and I will likely read it every couple years fir the rest of my life. It’s that much fun. And PLEASE Craig, don’t leave us with so much unfinished business in the galaxy!! We NEED about another dozen books or so!! Please!!! I’ll clean your garage!!!

He clearly doesn’t want to engage a bigger story. The time wars series has been thin but this one was vapid. Not sure I’ll invest in another. I just so love the Ryan character that it’s hard to let go. Please don’t milk that loyalty. Write something good with jeopardy and twists and all that good plot stuff.

How many times can they know they are coming but get surprised? How many times can the nice idiot get taken and have to be rescued. It’s just the sane stuff over and over. The premise is brilliant if weak scientifically. Characters are ok but stereotyped. It’s really weak writing that has a premise that keeps you coming back hoping maybe it will get a little better. But after 3 SHORT books. I had to say goodbye. The first two really should have been one book. Then I nights have stuck it out a while longer. But at 8-10 hours you get 2 hours of story and the rest redundant, highly predictable battle scenes. I do NOT understand the excellent ratings unless these are all teenagers. But RC Bray can make ANYTHING listenable.

Too much battle snd not enough story. But he characters were fun so I am going to give the next one a try. RC is of course wonderful as usual. At least they didn’t say something about lasers I. Space having a limited range if some other bogus science. Hallelujah! Authors, please note: lasers are focusable and that makes their range IN SPACE (you know the place where there is literally nothing out there to get in the way of the light) UNLIMITED. As long as they don’t hit some MATTER. Like a spaceship. Please make a note for future reference. Frankly, the same goes for projectiles like rail gun slugs etc. even missives having run out if fuel. Also, velocity and acceleration are not the same thing. And a craft can’t approach the speed of light, even fractions of it unless the plasma propellant is leaving the nozzle heat fast, which I suspect is impossible. Best wishes! Eric
