Historia
From the summer of 1870 to the spring of 1871, famously dubbed the "Terrible Year" by Victor Hugo, Paris and its people were besieged, starved, and forced into surrender by Germans-then imperiled again as radical republicans established a breakaway Commune, ultimately crushed by the French Army after bloody street battles and the burning of central Paris.

Stunningly great narrator!
Revisado: 12-26-24
This is the story of the beginnings of French Impressionism set against the siege of Paris in 1870. It showcases the painters Manet and Morisot. I learned so much, and am very enriched by the author’s approach and research. I thoroughly enjoyed the excellent French pronounciations of the narrator- so, so good!

Historia
Dean Jocelin has a vision: that God has chosen him to erect a great spire on his cathedral. His mason anxiously advises against it, for the old cathedral was built without foundations. Nevertheless, the spire rises octagon upon octagon, pinnacle by pinnacle, until the stone pillars shriek and the ground beneath it swims. Its shadow falls ever darker on the world below, and on Dean Jocelin in particular. From the author of Lord of the Flies, The Spire is a dark and powerful portrait of one man's will, and the folly that he creates.

This ruined my experience with Audible
Revisado: 07-29-24
About this title: The narration by Benedict Cumberbatch is incredibly good, except for the parts where he speaks so fast or so low that it's not understandable. That doesn't happen very often. Other than that, he is a superb voice actor,
Also about this title: it is written in stream of consciousness, and the main character goes crazy. That's an old cliche, and I grew tired of it in high school. If I had known this beforehand, I would not have selected this title. It makes me feel like I myself am going crazy along with the character, and I don't enjoy that experience. I had to rewind many sections to figure out why I wasn't understanding the plot, until I realized that there really is no plot and it's just a slow descent to madness. Feh. Enough of that.
I love everything about cathedrals and seek out books about them, so this was not an unusual selection for me. However, it was extremely disappointing.
It was even more disappointing when Audible refused to let me return the title, which I had purchased with a credit, so I should have been able to return it according to their TOS. The refusal was arbitrary, since I'd only had the purchase for a few days and since I haven't made any returns this year. This has ruined the Audible experience for me and I will cancel my membership.

Historia
In 2017, President Obama, in his final Oval Office interview, was asked who gave him hope for the future of the country, and Jason Kander was the first name he mentioned. Suddenly, Jason was a national figure. As observers assumed he was preparing a run for the presidency, Jason announced a bid for mayor of Kansas City instead and was headed for a landslide victory. But after eleven years battling PTSD from his service in Afghanistan, Jason was seized by depression and suicidal thoughts. He dropped out of the mayor’s race and out of public life. And finally, he sought help.

Really well done
Revisado: 11-10-22
Beautifully read by the author and his wife. Tightly edited so that there's nothing extra, so that the pace keeps moving, and so that the storyline is well preserved. Very important and humane information. This book is a treasure.

Historia
The late 19th century was a period of explosive technological creativity, but arguably the most important invention of all was Thomas Edison’s incandescent light bulb. Unveiled in his Menlo Park, New Jersey, laboratory in 1879, the light bulb overwhelmed the American public with the sense of the birth of a new age. More than any other invention, the electric light marked the arrival of modernity.

Not about Edison himself, but about the times
Revisado: 05-10-22
This book is not about Edison himself, but about the age he lived in. It was fascinating to learn about those times, and how different their world was from now, and to imagine how my great grandparents must have experienced the changes from candlelight to kerosene to gas to electric light. They were immigrant farmers, so they would have seen the lighting in the big cities that they traveled through, like New York. Must have been amazing to them.

Historia
In this effortlessly erudite account, Russell Shorto traces the idiosyncratic evolution of Amsterdam, showing how such disparate elements as herring anatomy, naked Anabaptists parading through the streets, and an intimate gathering in a 16th-century wine-tasting room had a profound effect on Dutch - and world - history. Weaving in his own experiences of his adopted home, Shorto provides an ever-surprising, intellectually engaging story of Amsterdam from its golden age to the present.

Quiara Alegría Hudes was the sharp-eyed girl on the stairs while her family danced their defiance in a tight North Philly kitchen. She was awed by her mother and aunts and cousins, but haunted by the unspoken, untold stories of the barrio — even as she tried to find her own voice in the sea of language around her, written and spoken, English and Spanish, bodies and books, Western art and sacred altars.

Historia
From 1337 to 1453 England repeatedly invaded France on the pretext that her kings had a right to the French throne. Though it was a small, poor country, England for most of those "100 years" won the battles, sacked the towns and castles, and dominated the war. Desmond Seward's critically acclaimed account of the Hundred Years War brings to life all of the intrigue, beauty, and royal to-the-death-fighting of that legendary century-long conflict.

Superb narrator and fascintating history
Revisado: 05-30-21
Mr Patterson is a superb narrator with a lovely British accent yet flawless French pronunciation. This is a wonderful book to listen to before travel to Normandy and Brittany and the Loire regions of France, so that you can learn a bit of the horrible tug of wars that went on in the regions in the late 1300s and early 1400s, only to be followed by further wars of religion, the Huegenot persecutions, iconoclasms, the French revolution, and WW1 and 2. Mon Dieu! Quell histoire. Well done.

Historia
Two men, each handsome and unusually adept at his chosen work, embodied an element of the great dynamic that characterized America’s rush toward the twentieth century. The architect was Daniel Hudson Burnham, the fair’s brilliant director of works and the builder of many of the country’s most important structures, including the Flatiron Building in New York and Union Station in Washington, D.C. The murderer was Henry H. Holmes, a young doctor who, in a malign parody of the White City, built his “World’s Fair Hotel” just west of the fairgrounds.

Revisado: 05-26-20
I loved this book because it helped me learn more about the late 1800's. The year of the Chicago World's Fair is the same year that my grandparents were born, so while they did not attend, it's eye-opening to learn details of the world they were born into. I've enjoyed Mr Larson's other books, he is an excellent writer. I'm gonna buy the print book so that I can savor it again!

Historia
What happens when the President of the United States governs one Tweet at a time? When the elected leader of the free world may not have a firm grasp on the names of government agencies, much less an understanding of their intricate inner-workings? In the days following the 2016 inauguration, government personnel searched for answers that didn’t exist, while White House staff scoured halls for employees who would never be appointed.

Historia
One of the most admired nonfiction writers of our time retells the story of one truly fabulous year in the life of his native country - a fascinating and gripping narrative featuring such outsized American heroes as Charles Lindbergh, Babe Ruth, and yes Herbert Hoover, and a gallery of criminals (Al Capone), eccentrics (Shipwreck Kelly), and close-mouthed politicians (Calvin Coolidge). It was the year Americans attempted and accomplished outsized things and came of age in a big, brawling manner. What a country. What a summer. And what a writer to bring it all so vividly alive.
