The level of expertise, depth and thoughtfulness that this writer put into his forensic evaluations is inspiring.
Revisado: 01-01-25
I've read a lot of forensic reports throughout my career, both in a clinical setting, and in an emergency room crisis capacity. This book made me realize how lacking many of those evaluations were. I found the level of expertise, depth and thoughtfulness that this writer put into his reports so inspiring. i also appreciated his ability to acknowledge and explore his own possible biases when evaluating a person. I feel like I learned a lot from reading this book.

Historia
On February 17, 2022, Brittney Griner arrived in Moscow ready to spend the WNBA offseason playing for the Russian women’s basketball team where she had been the centerpiece of previous championship seasons. Instead, a security checkpoint became her gateway to hell when she was arrested for mistakenly carrying under one gram of medically prescribed hash oil. Brittney’s world was violently upended in a crisis she has never spoken in detail about publicly—until now.

Unflinching honest
Revisado: 05-11-24
I really loved this book. I didn't know much about Brittney Griner until she was taken hostage. She's an amazing person who's been through hardships even before her incarceration. She's unflinchingly honest about her growing up years and the bullying she endured during that time and throughout her adult life. Even during her incarceration, both here and in Russian. She's not a person who feels sorry for herself, and is deeply introspective. She just seems like a beautiful, honest soul.

Patric Gagne realized she made others uncomfortable before she started kindergarten. Something about her caused people to react in a way she didn’t understand. She suspected it was because she didn’t feel things the way other kids did. Emotions like fear, guilt, and empathy eluded her. For the most part, she felt nothing. And she didn’t like the way that “nothing” felt.

Historia
Vain and charismatic Walter Sickert made a name for himself as a painter in Victorian London. But the ghoulish nature of his art - as well as extensive evidence - points to another name, one that's left its bloody mark on the pages of history: Jack the Ripper. Cornwell has collected never-before-seen archival material - including a rare mortuary photo, personal correspondence and a will with a mysterious autopsy clause - and applied cutting-edge forensic science to open an old crime to new scrutiny.

In my book, you will meet a little girl named Viola who ran from her past until she made a life-changing decision to stop running forever. This is my story, from a crumbling apartment in Central Falls, Rhode Island, to the stage in New York City, and beyond. This is the path I took to finding my purpose but also my voice in a world that didn’t always see me.

Brilliant. Beautiful. Searingly truthful.
Revisado: 08-05-23
Wow. It's been a while since I was so moved by a book and a reader. Viola is one of those souls who has been brave enough to face her entire childhood and accept and embrace every piece of it.... both the good, the terrible and everything in between.
I couldn't imagine how this book could end. I wanted it to keep going. But the last few minutes were so beautiful and honest that it felt just right. She is brilliant at crafting both her work as an actor and her soul as a human.

I always love Harry Bosch books. The only problem I had with this one was the music score in the background. it was too much! I felt like it sometimes overpowered the story . however, otherwise, the reader and story we're good.

It truly captures the multi faceted parts of terrible crimes. It gives a human face to everyone who comes to the table in a situation like this, both victims and perpetrators. Sometimes the face of humanity is full of love and grace and sometimes its just evil.

During André Leon Talley’s first magazine job, alongside Andy Warhol at Interview, a fateful meeting with Karl Lagerfeld began a decades-long friendship with the enigmatic, often caustic designer. Propelled into the upper echelons by his knowledge and adoration of fashion, André moved to Paris as bureau chief of John Fairchild’s Women’s Wear Daily, befriending fashion's most important designers (Halston, Yves Saint Laurent, Oscar de la Renta). But as André made friends, he also made enemies.

Fashion history, memoir and grace....
Revisado: 05-23-20
The combination of fashion history, personal memoir and spiritual grace really resonated with me. I enjoyed this book immensely. Having the author read the book made it even better. Having that distinct voice tell his own story added to the experience for me.
I am just an ordinary person wth a creative bent who's always enjoyed reading about fashion and following fashion trends. I've had immense respect for Andre Leon Talley and Grace Coddington for many years and I've been wondering what happened to them. Where was the celebration of all they have contributed over the years? I've missed them. Sadly, now I understand.
There's an measure of honest self-reflection that runs through this memoir that really resonated with me. There are aspects of this honesty that I don't see often in an autobiography or memoir. Although my life experience has been unlike the author's; I will never be able to relate to being able to live an opulent lifestyle that his career afforded him. But what is familiar is grace and the desire for love and kindness in the world, especially in these times. Additionally, the clear presentation of what it's like to be "other" also rang true.
I'll likely listen to this book again at some other point in my life.

One of the best true crime books I've ever read.
Revisado: 08-24-18
This book is more than a true crime book. It's also a book about a writer with a talent for real detective work and also the heart of a compassionate therapist, neither of which she is by trade. She should receive a posthumous honorary PhD for he breathtaking research she did on this case. Even the work that was put into the book after she died was excellent. Her book was hard to put down. I'm heartbroken that we won't hear more from Michelle McNamara.
