Historia
When the great red star Calamity appeared in the sky, some believed the end had come. They were right. Calamity created the Epics: humans with incredible powers they didn't deserve. They could have saved mankind. They could have lifted us into harmony and prosperity. Instead they burned. They slaughtered. They conquered. And then they ruled. Jax has learned all of this the hard way. Orphaned at an early age, he's spent most of his childhood training to be a Reckoner - determined to find the Epics' weaknesses, unlock their secrets, and protect those of us who are still left.

A fun story, but…
Revisado: 12-23-24
I’m a huge Brandon Sanderson fan, but this book felt a bit predictable in the way the story progressed. Still a fun adventure!

Sam and Sadie—two college friends, often in love, but never lovers—become creative partners in a dazzling and intricately imagined world of video game design, where success brings them fame, joy, tragedy, duplicity, and, ultimately, a kind of immortality. It is a love story, but not one you have heard before.

Moving!

What an excellent performance for a wonderful book about human relationships. I was struck by the beauty and messy characters and how well they felt real.

Tim Curry does this classic justice!
Revisado: 09-22-24
I read this book for a fantasy bingo, and I’m so glad I revisited a classic that I missed years ago! A captivating story with magic, necromancy, and interesting world building makes for an excellent story.

Historia
Looking at real estate isn’t usually a life-or-death situation, but an apartment open house becomes just that when a failed bank robber bursts in and takes a group of strangers hostage. The captives include a recently retired couple who relentlessly hunt down fixer-uppers to avoid the painful truth that they can’t fix their own marriage. There’s a wealthy bank director who has been too busy to care about anyone else and a young couple who are about to have their first child but can’t seem to agree on anything.

A heartfelt story of loss, community, and family
Revisado: 04-05-24
I had heard great things about this book and I’m glad I listened to it! I thought the use of the hostage situation to showcase relationships was very clever, and the entire journey was fun to listen to!

Eerie vision of a future…
Revisado: 12-04-23
When I talked about this book with a friend, we both agreed that this book is written with a literary style of the ellipsis, in that so much is unsaid but assumed or left for the reader to fill in. Even with that style though, the book works to paint a poignant picture of what it means to be human.

Historia
Parking, quite literally, has a death grip on America: each year a handful of Americans are tragically killed by their fellow citizens over parking spots. But even when we don’t resort to violence, we routinely do ridiculous things for parking, contorting our professional, social, and financial lives to get a spot. Indeed, in the century since the advent of the car, we have deformed—and in some cases demolished—our homes and our cities in a Sisyphean quest for cheap and convenient car storage.

Imagine a radically different world
Revisado: 08-27-23
This book does an excellent job of breaking down the many different rules about parking and obstacles city planners face when trying to make cities for the people and not for the cars. Europe does this surprisingly well, will America radically change its approach to cities and give them back to the people? Grabar makes the argument that it’s possible but that the intervening years between the current reality and the imagined reality will be challenging

I was very impressed with this full cast production! The story was really good and the voice acting/sound effects felt very immersive. I hope they make a sequel, because the world they made was great.

Historia
When Dr. Louis Creed takes a new job and moves his family to the idyllic, rural town of Ludlow, Maine, this new beginning seems too good to be true. Yet despite Ludlow's tranquility, there's an undercurrent of danger that lingers...like the graveyard in the woods near the Creeds' home, where generations of children have buried their beloved pets.

A fun sequel but…
Revisado: 09-23-21
I found the 4th installment of the Stormlight Archive to be fun, but not as good as the last three. I do think the next one though will bring this arc to a wonderful conclusion! I felt Rhythm was more of a setup novel and suffered a little bit from middle book syndrome.

Revisado: 08-24-21
Weir does it again! This science fiction novel is fantastic in all ways. The story is compelling and a lot of the science is real. We get into relativistic travel, morals, and an overall fantastic story.
