Historia
We've come a long way in the forty years since the Shongairi attacked Earth, killed half its people, and then were driven away by an alliance of humans with the other sentient bipeds who inhabit our planet. We took the technology they left behind, and rapidly built ourselves into a starfaring civilization. Because we haven't got a moment to lose. Because it's clear that there are even more powerful, more hostile aliens out there, and Earth needs allies. But it also transpires that the Shongairi expedition that nearly destroyed our home planet ... wasn't an official one.

I like the series but I think he was running out of steam
Revisado: 10-21-24
I like the series but this was by far the weakest book. I was already skeptical when the length was so much shorter than the others, but then over the last hour is filled with padding filled with a glossary of terms, and charts and other notes about star systems rather than story. There were times when the book dragged hard, but others that the book was quite engaging. I’ll still buy the nex book because I liked the first two so much but if it’s another disappointment it could mean a sad death for this otherwise inventive series. I really wish the author would get back to the vampires. Why have them be this big reveal in book one and the reason for humanity’s survival id they aren’t actually going to do anything in subsequent novels? 3 stars is the best I can give in spite of the enjoyable moments. The cut in length on top of filler on top of sections were things just dragged and some extremely stilted dialogue at moments pulled everything down.

Historia
Everyone expected Violet Sorrengail to die during her first year at Basgiath War College-Violet included. But Threshing was only the first impossible test meant to weed out the weak-willed, the unworthy, and the unlucky. Now the real training begins, and Violet’s already wondering how she’ll get through. It’s not just that it’s grueling and maliciously brutal, or even that it’s designed to stretch the riders’ capacity for pain beyond endurance. It’s the new vice commandant, who’s made it his personal mission to teach Violet exactly how powerless she is–unless she betrays the man she loves.

Too Much Porn
Revisado: 01-16-24
If you took out the porn and whining about trust this book would be at least 12 hours shorter. This book can't decide if it wants to be fantasy or erotica. It holds up for fantasy, the randomly inserted sex scenes that don't really advance the story make me question whether I want to continue reading or not.

8 Hours Left - Very Close to DNF
Revisado: 12-17-23
The story started out okay but I’m very close to giving up. The protagonist is just.. such an idiot that I don’t like following her. The world the author created is okay but I just can’t get over how the main character takes every chance she gets to do the stupidest thing possible for her situation. She has no common sense, and frankly the her defiant “mouthy” personality doesn’t make sense for her isolated upbringing.
There’s also a glaring plot hole that ties into the characters’ stupidity. Supposedly she’s supposed to kill the god of death to save her kingdom, but based on everything presented they don’t explain how doing that would fix her kingdom’s problems at all. On top of that she learns that killing a deity of this power would have cataclysmic results for the entire wild and afterlife (including the kingdom she wants to save) and she still works toward following through the plan when there’s a far more obvious solution: make nice with the guy who made her kingdom healthy before so he can do it again… I mean he’s already drooling all over her so… why not? Again the he character is too dumb to see it.
Finally, the author doesn’t write realistic emotional responses for characters. This again ties into protagonist stupidity… The character is dropped into a strange foreign world with dangerous creatures she didn’t know existed and is surrounded by gods and immortals when she herself is human… and she decides to go every place that even gods say is dangerous for them on the first mention of them? The character has no sense of self preservation. No sense of unease at being in an alien environment and completely oblivious to her current surroundings.
How am I supposed to believe that this is a person that has trained to be an expert assassin while only talking to like 3 people her entire life up until the start of the book? The story and character make no sense.
Also the porn scenes are annoying but easy to skip. They aren’t very enticing thankfully there have only been 2 so far.

I Love the Series, but This Book is Weak
Revisado: 09-23-23
This story is very disjointed compared to other books. The first part about Ryoka is good but sadly it ended after a few hours and the rest of the events to follow don’t really connect to it. Why name a book after a PoV segment that is barely even featured?
I feel like nothing important or exciting has really happened.
The section in Doctorville did cover important events but it just dragged on and on and became boring. Not much excitement in this volume.
Erin gets depressed then gets better and goes shopping. Where’s the fun?
I like the expanded characterization of the King of Destruction’s part of the world but again… nothing so important is happening or presented in an exciting way… yay the king has a sword made for him… okay… and?
The story just stops at the end without any resolution. I could have told you this would happen 70% of the way through because there was no conflict to produce a resolution. I feel like this book was 36 hours of filler... I would be more okay with this if there was actually a conclusion and plot points that were hit along the way.
The most interesting stuff in the story happens in the first few chapters with Ryoka, but all of those story lines and plot points get abandoned in favor of everyone twiddling their thumbs around the world. I guess the stuff with numbtongue was kind of interesting but it's not satisfying because none of his memory stuff was used for any purpose.
This whole book is just a bunch of "and this happened and this happened and this happened and this happened" without any real reasoning behind it. If this was the first book in a series I wouldn't read the second, but I'm sticking with it because I know this author can write good stuff.... it's just not in this particular volume.

Don't Buy If You Want a Completed Story
Revisado: 01-15-23
It's been 3 years since this was released. It seems unlikely that we will see book 3. This story is NOT COMPLETE. It just stops in the middle of the story with no resolution or clear outcome to the characters' many problems. On top of it, they ramp things up in the last few paragraphs to deliver an unnecessary cliffhanger. This is 20 hours of my life I will never have again.
Authors should respect their readers time. Clearly this guy doesn't care about his customers enough to finish telling the story they paid for when they bought the book.

Disappointing
Revisado: 10-12-22
I bought this book because I got excited by the AI that was introduced at the end of the omnibus in a semi-cliffhanger fashion... Imagine my disappointment then to discover that Bastian is only in one scene, and has all of 2 lines in the entire novel. This isn't the first time Cooper has lead up to a cliffhanger-like ending, just to abandon the storyline in the next book.
This isn't the book I thought I would get when I bought it.

Less Enjoyable Than Previous Books
Revisado: 09-27-22
I got bored in this installment. I was really excited to see how the people from Earth would get along in the new world, but very little of the story touched on this. I feel like nothing really interesting or exciting happened in this novel compared to the other books. I'll keep listening to the series, but I hope this isn't a sign of things to come.

Historia
While on duty, Trig had received an Automated AEthereal Message from the OCSS Bone Wracker: a Call-To-Arms, an extremely rare type of message that was only issued when a ship encountered a situation that was beyond the capabilities of a single OCSS. Of course, the truly exciting news was that his superior, Thargus, was temporarily incapacitated, making Trig the acting First Shaman, giving him a front row seat to the investigation as part of the First Away Team. It appeared that, at long last, his on-duty life would get exciting enough to distract him from his off-duty life.

Bait and Switch
Revisado: 09-27-22
Bought this because the listing says it's part of the demons series, but really there's almost no connection. The characters are different, the setting is different, and the author seems to have forgotten what he said in other books about orcs, causing this scifi story to contradict the fantasy series this book is supposedly a part of.

Going Downhill
Revisado: 09-27-22
I'm about half way through now, and I keep finding myself thinking, "Do I really want to sit through 15 more hours of this?" I enjoyed the first book enough to give the rest of the series a shot. Book 2 was okay... but this? Ugh... The plot just seems to drag on forever. What little action there is fails to pop, and sometimes the story just seems to take a vacation into stonerville where everything is about getting high and looking for marijuana. I'm sure it's cute to potheads, but for people who aren't it's very annoying. Also the grammar goes out the window as soon as they start talking about "Unlife." It grates on the ears to the point that I felt compelled an early review.

It turns out, the "Demon Weed" actually is a gateway drug! Who knew? Tom Perkinje certainly didn't. He had never smoked anything in his life, but as the new kid in town trying to make friends, he foolishly let his new buddy Reggie talk him into trying a joint that he'd picked up from a new dealer. Before he knew it, Tom was having a seriously bad trip; a total out-of-body experience where the world had dissolved around him.

Good Story, OK Narration, Poor Ending
Revisado: 09-17-22
This story is pretty good, but the narration takes a while to get used to. At first I really didn't like the speaker's voice, and the production came across as low budget, but eventually I got used to it. I like the overall theme of the story, the conflict, the action, etc, but the ending was very unsatisfying because the story just sort of stops without any real sense of accomplishment or resolution.
Yes, a foe is defeated, but we only just heard about the guy a few hours before he was defeated, and he wasn't connected to any of the major players revealed to us throughout the book. It seemed like kind of a pointless way to end the novel because it came at a time where there was no real growth or resolution for the character or the plot in terms of accomplishing the protagonists' goals. In fact the final conflict came down to the protagonist just sort of coming up with stuff on the spot without any forethought or planning. As such the end result, feels hollow in terms of accomplishment.
As a general rule I don't like buying novels that fail to deliver a complete story arc, and would not normally rate above a 3 for a book that ends like this, however the rest of the story was interesting enough that I'll give it 4 stars. I would have given everything 5 stars with more polished narration/recording, and a proper ending to the story.
