What if they hadn't gone? That's the question Clementine can't stop asking herself. It was just a backyard barbeque. They didn't know their hosts that well. They were friends of friends. They could so easily have said no. But she and her husband, Sam, said yes, and now they can never change what they did and didn't do that beautiful winter's day. Six responsible adults. Three cute kids. One yapping dog. It's a normal weekend in the suburbs. What could possibly go wrong?

Incredible attention to intention & consequences
Revisado: 03-23-25
Once I got used to the accent, I relaxed into the subtle voices the narrator applied. The story is nuanced & layered & very clever. The characters relatable yet challenging, which made me look for the challenges I may present to my loved ones. A laugh, a tear, a nod, a grimace - expect to experience them.

Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water is set in Kerala, on South India’s Malabar Coast, and follows three generations of a family that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning—and in Kerala, water is everywhere. At the turn of the century, a twelve-year-old girl from Kerala’s long-existing Christian community, grieving the death of her father, is sent by boat to her wedding, where she will meet her forty-year-old husband for the first time.

A major "best book" contender
Revisado: 03-13-25
The story, the immersion into a part of Indian history, the culture, food, characters; especially strong female characters & enduring friendships, mutual support & big loves. I even loved the medical mysteries entwined and the artistic soul expressions. The themes, the thoughts, the exquisite writing. Just wonderful.

This booked answered two important questions for me about my own life, and I am so grateful. I have new hope of breaking through patterns I thought I'd be stuck with despite decades of self-work. And, practically, who knew me getting grumpy was my (not maybe the best) way to meet my desperate need for silence? I thought I was just hopelessly prone to being unpleasant! Now I can start conversations with myself and those close to me about how I'll meet my needs in more productive ways. Thank you.

Historia
Emerging science is showing that cholesterol levels are a poor predictor of heart disease and that standard prescriptions for lowering it, such as ineffective low-fat/high-carb diets and serious, side-effect-causing statin drugs, obscure the real causes of heart disease. Even doctors at leading institutions have been misled for years based on creative reporting of research results from pharmaceutical companies intent on supporting the $31-billion-a-year cholesterol-lowering drug industry.
