Haunting, harrowing, and downright horrifying, this classic collection from the modern master of the fantastic features: "The Small Assassin": a fine, healthy baby boy was the new mother's dream come true - or her nightmare.... "The Emissary": the faithful dog was the sick boy's only connection with the world outside - and beyond.... "The Wonderful Death of Dudley Stone": a most remarkable case of murder - the deceased was delighted! And more!

I wasn't enjoying the stories enough to finish them. I'm glad it was free. Also, one story ran into another without warning.

Romance novel pretending to be a Fantasy story

Good fantasy story diminished
by too much romance. The performance helped save my overall score. I’m sure some like that mix, but it wasn’t for me.

Historia
Set against the turbulent backdrop of the near future, The Ruins of Mars opens on the discovery of an ancient city buried under the sands of the red planet. Images captured by twin sentient satellites show massive domes, imposing walls, and a grid work of buildings situated directly on the rim of Mars' Grand Canyon, the Valles Marineris. With the resources of Earth draining away under the weight of human expansion, a plan is hatched to reclaim Mars from the cold grasp of death.

Good story, but it needed a science editor
Revisado: 04-13-22
Great premise for a Sci-fi story. Great performance. But the writing could have used a good editor. The dialog was unnecessarily wordy for my taste. Science teams would have been much more to the point. The dialog here seems to have been stretched out to fill out 3 books when 2 could have been the sweet spot for this story. To me the greatest error was in the context of science and technology terms. A high school science nerd could have improved the accurate usage of the science and technology jargon in this book. It was cringeworthy at times. That said, I bought all 3 books because it was an interesting story. Had the book been edited by a person with a science background, it could have been a 5 star story too.
The performance was virtually flawless. The only nit-picking I could do was 2 or 3 mispronounced words. The characters were easy to distinguish and it was easy to forget it was one person doing the reading. For my next book, I'll search out something by this actor.

The Holy Land, 1260. Josseran Sarrazini is chosen to escort the Pope's emissary on an embassy to the all-conquering Mongol horde in an effort to save all Christendom from destruction. But although he serves as a Templar warrior, Josseran is not all that he appears to be. Now they have to spend nine months in each other's company on the most dangerous and most inhospitable journey on the earth - across the legendary deserts of Persia, through the horrific black hurricanes of the Taklimakan, along the entire spider's web of the Silk Road to Khubilai Khan's legendary capital at Xanadu.

Could be better
Revisado: 02-11-20
It is a good story with the exception of a rushed ending that leaves you hanging. The main characters elicit strong feelings in the reader. Just as it should be. My biggest complaint with this book was the audio quality. Emily Woo Zeller has a beautiful voice when doing the narrative. However, her vocal characterizations of male characters are terrible. Some are mildly believable and others are oafish charicatures of humans. But, by far, the greatest flaw in this recording is the audio levels. The narrarive is beautifully done, but barely a whisper. If you turn it up to hear that clearly, most dialog is a relative shouting match, even when not justified by the story. As in, so loud it hurts, sending you to the volume control. This book could be made much better by remastering the original recording with much more audio level compression.

Historia
The most thorough statement of one of Emerson's recurrent themes, the need for each individual to avoid conformity and false consistency, and follow his or her own instincts and ideas. It is the source of one of Emerson's most famous quotations, "A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds." This essay is a considered a watershed moment in which transcendentalism became a major cultural movement. An American classic.

A difficult book to listen to.
Revisado: 11-09-19
It’s an old book, well worth listening to. But you really have to work for it. The phrasing is nonstandard by today’s language. I have no problem with that because I listen to a lot of oldies. The biggest problem is the narrator. Imagine listening to Captain Kirk or Christopher Walken reading for you. Very difficult to complete listening to the performance. Elocution is also a bit muddled at times.

I had hoped for more
Revisado: 06-21-17
What would have made Great Minds of the Western Intellectual Tradition, 3rd Edition better?
The great minds reduced to a spreadsheet. Examples and categorizations are given for these people and the subjects they wrote about. No mention is made of why they thought like they did or why it was a great idea. Finally, this series of courses seems to be viewed from a theocentric Christian standpoint. I got two thirds of the way through it and had to give up. It just wasn't worth listening to anymore. The only reason I did not request a refund was that the early chapters were OK.
Has Great Minds of the Western Intellectual Tradition, 3rd Edition turned you off from other books in this genre?
Somewhat
What didn’t you like about the narrators’s performance?
I found myself allergic to Alan Charles Kors' voice and cadence. I had to turn the playback speed up to 1.25x just to continue. The rest of the narrators performances were fine.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
It provided a list of philosophers from which to pursue further study
