Historia
Jason Watkins, the award-winning stage and screen actor best-known for his roles in The Lost Honour and A Very English Scandal, masterfully performs this brand-new recording of Barnaby Rudge; first published in 1841, it was Dickens’ fifth title and his first historical novel. Set against the backdrop of the Gordon Riots of 1780, Barnaby Rudge reflects back on a time of revolt against the British parliament, following the Catholic Relief Act of 1778.

Brilliant but dark
Revisado: 01-17-20
Barnaby Rudge is a great classic and brilliant portrayal of society at that time. It would be great for a college essay. I didn't enjoy it though as there were only one or two characters to enjoy and admire. It's primarily a dark and depressing story. I was glad when I finally got to the end.

light hearted
Revisado: 10-01-19
I had just finished Oliver Twist which is a long and unhappy story. I needed something lighthearted and this was just right. I would prefer a stronger female voice. The character is not nearly as wonderful as Mrs. Pollifax but I've ordered the second book in the series.

good story, awful narrator
Revisado: 08-22-17
What did you like best about The Seventh Sinner? What did you like least?
Best - the story
Least - the narrator
What didn’t you like about Grace Conlin’s performance?
she reads whole sentences with very little inflection and no pauses.
I had to really concentrate to keep my mind from wandering.
She did try to distinguish the various character voices but was not skilled or successful in her effort.
Did The Seventh Sinner inspire you to do anything?
I am planning to get the second book in the series. I like Elizabeth Peters.
Any additional comments?
The end of the story was a bit tedious as the details were revealed.

Historia
Here is the story of two families, branches of the Solomons, transported to an alien land. Both branches eventually grow rich and powerful. But through three generations, the families never, for one moment, relinquish their hatred for each other. This novel is also the story of Australia, from its beginnings to its coming of age as a nation.

What did you like best about this story?
All about Ben and the ANAZACS. A wonderful tribute to the young men who gave and lost their lives during WWI.
Any additional comments?
A very good conclusion to the trilogy and a wonderful tribute to the history of Australia and New Zealand.

Historia
The year is 1861. The American Civil War has just begun, and London arms dealer Daniel Alberton is becoming a very wealthy man. His quiet dinner party seems remote indeed from the passions rending America. Yet investigator William Monk and his bride, Hester, sense growing tensions and barely concealed violence.

Monk - Slaves of Obsession
Revisado: 09-30-14
Any additional comments?
I love the Monk series. This one seemed to have a few plot holes and Monk seemed to jump to conclusions early on as if the story was put together quickly. However, the story develops well later on. I enjoyed it and would listen to it again.

Historia
The year is 1793, the eve of the Napoleonic Wars, and Horatio Hornblower, a 17-year-old boy unschooled in seafaring and the ways of seamen, is ordered to board a French merchant ship and take command of crew and cargo for the glory of England. Though not an unqualified success, this first naval adventure teaches the young midshipman enough to launch him on a series of increasingly glorious exploits.

Disappointed
Revisado: 06-13-14
Any additional comments?
Very disappointed. I had heard this series was very good. There is action but the character is not developed to any depth and no relationships are developed. There also seemed to be a jump from Hornblower being an inexperienced young man to an "in-charge" kind of guy. I like the Maturin-Aubry series so much better!

Historia
William Monk knows London's streets like the back of his hand; after all, they are where he earns his living. But the river Thames and its teeming docks - where towering schooners and clipper ships unload their fabulous cargoes and wharf rats and night plunderers ply their trades - is unknown territory.

My favorite!
Revisado: 09-26-12
Any additional comments?
This is my favorite Monk book so far. (I've listened to alot but not all of them up to this one.) It has wonderful word pictures of life on and around the river at that time period and draws you more intimately into the lives of Monk, Hester, and Oliver Rathbone. It would make a great movie.
