An old fashioned Western

This is a jewel of a book! It has all the right parts, a Western flavor, a coming of age pathos, a satisfying ending. And to think it was a true story (at least, I hope that wasn't just part of the author's clever wording). A thoroughly satisfying read which would make a more than decent movie. Thank you!

I do understand that Mr. Gresham uses this narrator for all of his books but I really wish he would get someone new. This man's fake southern accent is a travesty. Having lived in the South, I find his portrayal of Southern dialects hokey and insulting. He sounds like what everyone in the rest of the country THINKS Southerners sound like.

In listening to this book, I realized that our country has ALWAYS had messy, crude, contentious and even dirty politics, from its earliest days until our present strident situation. Loyal, patriotic Americans have always disagreed.....even to the point of violence ....and yet America still stands, a beautiful if somewhat bruised example of Freedom just as the Lady in the harbor continues to hold her torch high to light the world.

don't know when I've met such a stupid protagonist! she made the WRONG decisions at every turn. and in the end.. ...she's indebted to a ruthless mob boss for the rest of her life and supposes she's found a father figure. brilliant writing but I dont know when I've had such disregard for a main character since meeting Scarlett O'Hara when I was 12 years old.

having been to Paris, Arkansas, I can say the town is nothing like this. I found the crude attempt to mimic a northern assumption of southern drawl tiresome. sorry I wasted a credit on this book.

The surprise ending was too far out in left field....didnt fit with the characterizations built throughout the story. Felt contived and out of sync.
