Historia
The Barnes family is in trouble. Dickie’s once-lucrative car business is going under—but Dickie is spending his days in the woods, building an apocalypse-proof bunker with a renegade handyman. His wife, Imelda, is selling off her jewelry on eBay and half-heartedly dodging the attention of fast-talking cattle farmer Big Mike, while their teenage daughter, Cass, formerly top of her class, seems determined to binge drink her way through her final exams. As for twelve-year-old PJ, he’s on the brink of running away.

mid way thru it it got dark. Darker than I like with no resolution. Is author setting it up for a series? Not worth the investment if time.

Historia
Olivia McAfee knows what it feels like to start over. Her picture-perfect life—living in Boston, married to a brilliant cardiothoracic surgeon, raising their beautiful son, Asher—was upended when her husband revealed a darker side. She never imagined that she would end up back in her sleepy New Hampshire hometown, living in the house she grew up in and taking over her father’s beekeeping business. Lily Campanello is familiar with do-overs, too. When she and her mom relocate to Adams, New Hampshire, for her final year of high school, they both hope it will be a fresh start.

A New Perspective.
Revisado: 01-31-23
I read/listen to be entertained, not educated. That’s just my honest truth. Why is that important? It’s not, really, it’s just how I personally approach a book. This book was a surprise, it both entertained and educated me, it made me think. This line sticks with me:
“How similar does a person have to be to you, before you remember to see them first as a human”.

Entertained by Book 1 and 2, Book 3, not so much..
Revisado: 07-23-19
Dull and unfortunate. Why the author elected to narrate Book 3 is beyond me - truly, I am easily entertained, however when an author elects to narrate their own work, in most cases, the life of the story gets lost.

Historia
When a teenage boy dies suspiciously on Halloween night, Salem's chief of police, John Rafferty, now married to gifted lace reader Towner Whitney, wonders if there is a connection between his death and Salem's most notorious cold case, a triple homicide dubbed The Goddess Murders, in which three young women, all descended from accused Salem witches, were slashed on Halloween night in 1989. He finds unexpected help in Callie Cahill, the daughter of one of the victims newly returned to town.

Revisado: 04-11-18
What would have made The Fifth Petal better?
While I enjoyed the Lace Reader and looked forward to the sequel - I was disappointed from the start. I made it through the first hour before I unplugged and am returning the book. The narrator is different from her other two books and droned on - I have no idea if the story was any good because I was comatosed by the performance.
What do you think your next listen will be?
Jodi Picoult - Leaving Time.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
Absolutley

Historia
Mrs. Sookie Poole of Point Clear, Alabama, has just married off the last of her daughters and is looking forward to relaxing and perhaps traveling with her husband, Earle. The only thing left to contend with is her mother, the formidable Lenore Simmons Krackenberry. Lenore may be a lot of fun for other people, but is, for the most part, an overbearing presence for her daughter. Then one day, quite by accident, Sookie discovers a secret about her mother's past that knocks her for a loop and suddenly calls into question everything she ever thought she knew about herself, her family, and her future.

A Just Miss
Revisado: 09-08-14
The story was entertaining though I had a hard time getting past the author/narrators voice. The narration might have lent its self to a shorter-stronger written book however I found it grating. The story seemed 'forced', was not as funny as it tried to be and I found myself irritated at several points wishing she'd just get-on-with-it. I read/listen purely for entertainments sake and am typically not terribly critical, I am sorry to rate this book so low - it could have been a great story. My recommendation? Skip this one and beware of authors who narrate their own work.

In this follow-up to her acclaimed 2007 novel The Bastard of Istanbul, Turkish author Elif Shafak unfolds two tantalizing parallel narratives---one contemporary and the other set in the 13th century, when Rumi encountered his spiritual mentor, the whirling dervish known as Shams of Tabriz---that together incarnate the poet's timeless message of love.

Spent a good amount of time rolling my eyes. Could have been good, I suppose... I found the execution lacking and the inconsistent narration did not help.
