I Waited To Buy This Until it Went On Sale . . .
Revisado: 06-19-23
And I'm glad I did. Richard Armitage is always worth listening to. And I was curious. And him being reunited with Nicola Walker again was . . . "fun" isn't the right word, but it was nice. But, from the very beginning, deep in my bones, I was afraid this book would not be my cup of tea.
I must say I wanted more suspense, action, mystery, etc, and fewer sappy characters. Unfortunately, I went into this book assuming that "Daniel" was going to be the hero. What a letdown. So, I had to totally re-frame my thinking fairly early on. And there weren't any heroes to speak of, unless you count the survivors.
I would much rather have listened to a story along the lines of "Strike Back" or "MI-6", but that genre is probably not Richard's favorite. I would even be glad to take a traditional British mystery.
But, congratulations to Richard Armitage for having the ability and the discipline to write a novel! More power to him!

Disappointing . . .
Revisado: 09-22-22
The story line was okay, but just barely. I was hoping for a story of the wild outdoors, or a story about rescue dogs and their partners. But, most of the action was over in the first five minutes.
The narration was distracting. The narrator deliberately pronounced every single letter and every single syllable, making for a very staccato-like performance, and stressing the wrong syllables or words.
At least it was on sale.

They're Back!
Revisado: 09-04-22
Yes, the narration of the social media texts is tedious, especially as it has no vocal inflection, as do the characters' voices. But, if Audible and/or the author deleted those parts, they would have had to label the book as "Abridged". And who wants that?
The social media texts also added to the length of this book, and I found myself zoning out during some of these parts.
But, overall, what a story! Very interesting on-line characters and their stories. The relationship between Strike and Robin moves forward, at a snail's pace. I'm ready for something to happen here. And Strike continues to abuse his leg.

Almost Perfect
Revisado: 07-31-22
I was enjoying listening to this book, thinking, "This is sure my kind of book!", when the storyline took a turn for the worse. I would have preferred a different ending. But it was certainly action-packed and kept me on board, so to speak. Narration was good, too.

Too Didactic for me
Revisado: 05-31-22
The storyline is good and suspenseful, but it loses some of that suspense while the author explains every little detail about the military machinations and ammo.
I am just looking for something suspenseful and tightly written. I am willing to believe the author knows what he is talking about.
The narrator is quite good.

Poppy Fields has a movie-star mother, 84 million Instagram followers, paparazzi following her every move, and a problem. Her Mexican vacation just went sideways (abducted-by-a-drug-lord sideways). Suddenly her life resembles one of her mother's movies, except the bullets are real, people are dying, and there's no guarantee of a happy ending. Surrounded by trained killers and unsure who she can trust, only one thing is certain - if Poppy doesn't escape, this vacation will be her last.

A little disappointing . . .
Revisado: 02-11-22
The cuteness this book starts out with becomes tedious pretty quickly, but the protagonist is only 23. The plot sounded like it could be good, but never lived up to its promise. At the end, she seems to magically mature, so there could be hope for the series.

Reacher goes where he wants, when he wants. That morning he was heading west, walking under the merciless desert sun — until he comes upon a curious scene. A Jeep has crashed into the only tree for miles around. A woman is slumped over the wheel. Dead? No, nothing is what it seems. The woman is Michaela Fenton, an army veteran turned FBI agent trying to find her twin brother, who might be mixed up with some dangerous people. Most of them would rather die than betray their terrifying leader.

It's Reacher, but not Reacher, you know? And, I found the narration of the female protagonist to be distracting. Still, this was better than the last book. At least there were a few moments of suspense and danger here and there.

Ex-Special Forces operator Tom Keeler is a rambling man. He’s just passing through the town of Alencourt, France, and in less than an hour, someone tries to kill him. Nice place, nice try. But it’s a case of mistaken identity, and they picked the wrong guy. The French police can’t be trusted, except for the beautiful Cecile Nazari. She finds out fast that keeping up with Keeler is a dangerous occupation. Because someone’s preying on the weak and unprotected. Someone murderous. But they never counted on coming up against a guy like Keeler.

A Jack Reacher look-a-like
Revisado: 10-17-21
This reminds me so much of the first JR novel, "Killing Floor". There are many similar plot and character points. It's not bad, it just doesn't develop the characters as fully as Lee Child did. The narrator falls into a sing-song pattern occasionally; perhaps due to the short sentences and terse narrative of the book. He does well with the women's voices, and, not knowing otherwise, his French pronunciation sounded good to me.
And, really, you know, we can't have too many Jack Reacher-type books.

Surprisingly good!
Revisado: 06-10-21
I say that because this story is over 14 hours long. And I've noticed with Audible that their prices are largely based on the length of time it takes to read the book, And, if the book is written by a woman, there will be lots of tedious emotions and back-history that do nothing for the story and only take up time.
But this book did hold my interest all the way through. I liked the rural setting and the characters. I'm glad the narrator was male. I think, generally speaking, their voices are lower and less clangy on my ears. His accent was good enough for my American ears. At least, nothing made me grit my teeth.
The ending did surprise me. It was not what I expected. I will look for other books by this author.
