Historia
Senator Jim MacVeagh is proud to serve his country - and his president, Mark Hollenbach, who has a near-spotless reputation as the vibrant, charismatic leader of MacVeagh’s party and the nation. When Hollenbach begins taking MacVeagh into his confidence, the young senator knows his star is on the rise. But then Hollenbach starts summoning MacVeagh in the middle of the night to Camp David. There, the president sits in the dark and rants about his enemies, unfurling insane theories about all the people he says are conspiring against him.

Too soon
Revisado: 04-18-25
Excellent story of a president gone insane. A bit too close to home and a bit too soon after the Biden administration.

Historia
As a Japanese-American fisherman stands trial for murder on an island in Puget Sound, snow blankets the countryside. The whiteness covers the courthouse, but it cannot conceal the memories at work inside: the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II, an unrequited love, and the ghosts of racism that still haunt the islanders. First novels rarely attract as much attention as Snow Falling on Cedars. Remaining on best seller lists for months, it has cast a spell on listeners across the country.

Perfect cozy winter read
Revisado: 03-23-25
This book is the perfect balance of irony tension, and slowly pulled out poetic reflection. Absolutely beautiful. George Guidelle is the perfect narrator for this book.

Decent little detective story - for a misogynist
Revisado: 12-12-22
Fun little detective story though the author continuously judges all female characters’ “worth” by how attractive they look. His description of what they are wearing demonstrates a complete lack of taste and understanding of what constitutes a classy or sexy outfit (tight red turtleneck and short leather mini skirt? A white cashmere sweater under a navy blue suit when going out to eat at a $500 a plate restaurant?) All females are potential people to sleep with but he doesn’t want to love or commit to anyone. They are just there to serve his physical and emotional needs and he prefers women who don’t need anything emotionally from him - only sexually and are there at his sexual beck and call at any given moment. There isn’t really and descriptions of sex or lustful moments leading me to believe the author has never had a relationship with a women and is just describing his ideal situation. Apart from that the storyline is entertaining thought the narrator was dreadful and didn’t take the time to learn how to pronounce the names of alcohol and fashion designers listed for the wealthy characters which lent to an underlying feeling that the narrator and author both are trying to tell a story they know nothing about.

Historia
The drought - or the Tap-Out, as everyone calls it - has been going on for a while now. Everyone’s lives have become an endless list of don’ts: don’t water the lawn, don’t fill up your pool, don’t take long showers. Until the taps run dry. Suddenly, Alyssa’s quiet suburban street spirals into a warzone of desperation; neighbors and families turned against each other on the hunt for water. And when her parents don’t return and her life - and the life of her brother - is threatened, Alyssa has to make impossible choices if she’s going to survive.

Such a riveting story
Revisado: 12-07-22
I swear I drank more water while listening to this story than I have in a long time! I also might have started shopping for rain barrels. It’s a fun story that keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole way through! All the voice actors did a great job keeping it interesting.

Fun sci-fi read
Revisado: 09-19-21
If you loved The Martian this book is “The Martian plus one”. Same troubleshoot and problem solving that I enjoyed so much, same dry and sarcastic sense of humor, completely different “mission”. Ray Porter is an excellent narrator for Any Weir’s books. He captures the characters perfectly.

Historia
On Winston Churchill’s first day as prime minister, Adolf Hitler invaded Holland and Belgium. Poland and Czechoslovakia had already fallen, and the Dunkirk evacuation was just two weeks away. For the next 12 months, Hitler would wage a relentless bombing campaign, killing 45,000 Britons. It was up to Churchill to hold his country together and persuade President Franklin Roosevelt that Britain was a worthy ally - and willing to fight to the end. In The Splendid and the Vile, Erik Larson shows how Churchill taught the British people "the art of being fearless."

Fantastic intimate perspective of the Blitz
Revisado: 10-01-20
First, you should know that all 17 listening hours of this book only cover the first year of WW2 starting with the first day of Winston Churchill’s Prime Ministry. The author uses diaries from the key players of the war as well as diary snippets from everyday citizens that kept a diary at the time. It feels like history straight from so many oral historians and is the best most accurate way to understand what was going on and how normal people felt about it. Winston Churchill is portrayed just as he would have wanted -“warts and all”. What an amazing and inspiring man! True leadership brings out the best and most noble characteristics in everyone it leads. Winston Churchill never failed to tell the truth but still manage to inspire courage and the noble desire to put one’s own best foot forward for the sake of others. Truly an inspiring read.

Historia
At the end of the Second World War, Cyril Conroy combines luck and a single canny investment to begin an enormous real estate empire, propelling his family from poverty to enormous wealth. His first order of business is to buy the Dutch House, a lavish estate in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia. Meant as a surprise for his wife, the house sets in motion the undoing of everyone he loves. The story is told by Cyril’s son Danny, as he and his older sister, the brilliantly acerbic and self-assured Maeve, are exiled from the house where they grew up by their stepmother.

A melancholy journey
Revisado: 04-13-20
This story of injustice and tragedy somehow seems more melancholy than sad. There’s a longing for the way things were throughout the book - so much so that you never ask where the book is going. It’s like a train ride that is completely enjoyable in and of itself. There is no destination. Tom Hanks does a wonderful job of taking the sadness and loneliness and making it somehow comforting and safe.

Historia
Reporter Sam Kean reveals the periodic table as it’s never been seen before. Not only is it one of man's crowning scientific achievements, it's also a treasure trove of stories of passion, adventure, betrayal, and obsession. The infectious tales and astounding details in The Disappearing Spoon follow carbon, neon, silicon, and gold as they play out their parts in human history, finance, mythology, war, the arts, poison, and the lives of the (frequently) mad scientists who discovered them.

So freaking coooollllll!!!
Revisado: 02-04-20
I love this! I seriously have enjoyed getting my mind blown at every turn of the page, pancake atoms? Anti- bubbles? The alpha constant?! Why didn’t I learn this in school? The periodic table, physics and chemistry would all have been so much more fun! A great read even if you don’t care one iota about chemistry or even science in general.
