Historia
Here is a gripping, behind-the-scenes look inside the classic suspense shocker Psycho - and the creative genius who revolutionized filmmaking. First released in 1960, Psycho altered the landscape of horror films forever. But just as compelling as the movie itself is the story behind it. Stephen Rebello brings to life the creation of one of Hollywood’s most iconic films, from the story of Wisconsin murderer Ed Gein, the real-life inspiration for the character of Norman Bates, to Hitchcock’s groundbreaking achievements in cinematography, sound, editing, and promotion.

Terrific tale of the making of Psycho
Revisado: 09-29-21
They made a movie based on this book. It was not that good. This book, however, goes into minute detail about how Hitchcock's film got made. It also traces the history of the novel and the novelist and the real story that influenced Bloch to write Psycho. Really terrific stuff. Loved it!

An outstanding look at an important film
Revisado: 09-29-21
I saw this film when I was 19, and it was very upsetting. Really rattled my brain. I saw it recently, and it felt dated. Didn't seem as remarkable as it had in 1969. This book, however, makes me examine the story, the novel, the film, and the director in a whole new light. It's a terrific tale. I learned so much.

Historia
It was the best of times and the worst of times for Hollywood before the war. The box office was booming, and the studios’ control of talent and distribution was as airtight as could be hoped. But the industry’s relationship with Washington was decidedly uneasy - hearings and investigations into allegations of corruption and racketeering were multiplying, and hanging in the air was the insinuation that the business was too foreign, too Jewish, too "un-American" in its values and causes. Could an industry this powerful in shaping America’s mind-set really be left in the hands of this crew?

A great book about film directors of World War II
Revisado: 09-29-21
This book is absolutely riveting. Loved everything about it. Learned so much! The connections the author draws between these five directors is quite remarkable. Makes me want to see a lot of these movies again.

Historia
Saul Bellow evokes all the rich colors and exotic customs of a highly imaginary Africa in this acclaimed comic novel about a middle-aged American millionaire who, seeking a new, more rewarding life, descends upon an African tribe. Henderson's awesome feats of strength and his unbridled passion for life win him the admiration of the tribe - but it is his gift for making rain that turns him from mere hero into messiah. A hilarious, often ribald story, Henderson the Rain King is also a profound look at the forces that drive a man through life.

Bellow's Fictional Africa
Revisado: 09-29-21
I had a copy of this paperback novel since I was a child, and for some reason, I carried it with me from apartment to house to house for nearly six decades. Why? I have no idea, but now in my old age, I decided to tackle it, by listening to the audible and following along in my torn, yellowed paperback version, and it's quite a book. Lots of things wrong with it, of course. Bellow creates his own version of Africa, complete with pigmies and stereotype Africans and ---yes, I read reviews, and I know this 1959 novel is reviled for its portrayals of Tarzan-movie like dark continent 'types.'. But, there's something quite mesmerizing about this tale. Bellow invented nearly everything in it, including a wonderful lion. So a white millionaire goes to Africa and undergoes a change, influenced by an African King who encompasses all these values Henderson doesn't have: A sense of self-worth, a love for nature, and a down-to-earth understanding of humanity. This is a coming of age novel, except Henderson is not 13. He's 56. He grows up and comes back to America, a changed man. I loved the performance and really enjoyed the lessons he learns. This is my first introduction to Bellow and it made me want, want, want more. (That's a word Henderson uses quite often.)

Historia
Twelve-year-old Jessie finds out that a young teen girl was found murdered at a lumber mill log pond less than a mile from where she and her mother just moved. She sets her sights on finding the killer, not realizing that she might become the killer's next victim. It's the summer of 1956 in the outskirts of Portland, Oregon, a place and time where kids were free to ride their bikes into adventure and danger. Prejudice was rampant, and everyone had secrets.

Very engrossing and suspenseful
Revisado: 08-22-20
Though I'm not much of a mystery reader, I loved this novel. I listened to it on Audible, and the narrator is terrific. Animated. Dramatic. Takes on male and female voices effortlessly. What makes this novel unique and special is that the tale is
set in the 1950s and the protagonist has two moms. That sets up this very interesting coming of age plot, and as the novel progresses, suspense grows intense. Excellent writing and a wonderful heroine.
