The story feels too contrived perhaps because there are so many characters across time there is no real development and they seem very 1 or 2 dimensional.

I’m not sure why this is so highly rated. I found the character of Emilia and the situations to feel so contrived. I just couldn’t finish it at all. And was disappointed I couldn’t return it.

I got this book because the Nytimes said it was one of the best fiction books of the year. The author does an amazing job of chronicling the pain of a breakup and when I was seven hours in I started to like the main character. Yeah seven hours. There are two readers and the end of the book is the woman’s point of view on the breakup which seemed to be making more of a cultural point than really anything else. Well, to be fair, it did complete the picture but was that a story I needed to listen to? No it was not. I do listen and read for pleasure not cultural statements so possibly that was my issue. The writing is really great and she has created two extremely distinct and believable characters.

An incredible story of the truth of relationships

I purchased this based on past Sally Rooney books and at first I was not that excited about this (there are some uneven parts to the recording in the first third or so that are annoying - where the narrator obviously had to redo a phrase or sentence) but as the story unfolded, I experienced moments of complete awe at Rooney's ability to capture interactions between two very different people. She has created real people in her characters and they have real conversations about their relationships and just like in real life, people say things they don't actually mean and they regret it later. Unlike in some books where that misconception is the plot - these characters recognize their own failings and in the end own up to them. The character of Ivan is incredibly loveable. I want to read about what happens to him - so wise in this story. I will be re-listening to this book or purchasing the written copy to experience this book again. It's a story of relationships of all kinds, parent - child, siblings, lovers and friendships. It's complex and beautiful.

I loved this book. It talks about how people
With extreme grief are able to find themselves and beauty again. All wrapped in a fun story with magical elements.

It’s like hunger games but not. Definitely a strong statement about our messed up justice system and society but not really a good listen.

This is a very fun story. Though I was expecting more of a mystery than the way that it unfolded. I really enjoyed it but I felt like it couldn’t totally decide what type of book it was. And maybe that’s for the better.

I was excited to listen to this book but it was so loaded with cliches and see through plot lines that I just couldn't bring myself to finish it. I wanted to return it but apparently not possible. I really love books about this time period but not this one.

Halsey street like the author’s other books brims with complex deeply imperfect characters. The issue I had in this one is that the main character is so unlikeable. She is mean to people who are nice, she can’t forgive or make allowances for how other people walk through life and that makes it hard to understand why anyone would like her. I loved what’s mine and yours which has the same complex characters but manages to make some of them a little more approachable and thus people you feel compassion for unlike Penelope in this story.
