Zachary Ezra Rawlins is a graduate student in Vermont when he discovers a mysterious book hidden in the stacks. As he turns the pages, entranced by tales of lovelorn prisoners, key collectors, and nameless acolytes, he reads something strange: a story from his own childhood. Bewildered by this inexplicable book and desperate to make sense of how his own life came to be recorded, Zachary uncovers a series of clues - a bee, a key, and a sword.

too slow and meandering
Revisado: 04-07-20
I may have enjoyed this more in print, but the audiobook format for this particular title was incredibly challenging for me. I liked most of the narrators, but Dominic Hoffman as the "main part" was my least favorite, and it really hampered my enjoyment. I agree with other reviews that the story itself could have used some serious editing.
I enjoyed The Night Circus quite a bit, and was anticipating Morgenstern's next novel ever since, so to say I was let down would be an understatement.

Great novel and excellent narration
Revisado: 07-01-19
I'm here because I wanted to get the second book and it doesn't appear to be available on Audible yet, but having just finished Aching God I am very excited to read / listen to further entries in this series. Here in Aching God, Shel sets up relatable and likeable characters and an intriguing world. Shel hints here at some expansive world-building, but doesn't bore the reader with details; instead we get glimpses into theology and magic, a few interesting societies, and some colorful nobility such as the Queen of Hanifax (long may she reign.)
Altogether I enjoyed the story, and the pacing and narration were top-notch. Highly recommend for any and all fantasy audiobook fans.

Historia
Ten years after the collapse, Huxley has built a good life again. He has a loving wife, a farm with fields of golden barley, and a daughter with a strange and wonderful gift. Then the slavers come. Working out in the fields during the attack, Huxley returns too late. His daughter has been taken, and his wife is bleeding out, her last whispered words about a man with a scorpion tattoo on his neck. Where do the slavers go? Huxley has no idea. He knows only that they head east, and so will he, setting out on foot across the desert of the Wastelands.

Great narrator can't save mediocre story
Revisado: 09-21-16
What did you like best about Wolves? What did you like least?
The narration was spot on; Christian Rummel does a fantastic job.
My least favorite thing was the story itself; it is grit and testosterone and pain-porn nearly 100% of the time. Some people may like that but I found it tiresome.
What could D. J. Molles have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Self-torment to an extent is fine, but we don't want to wallow in it. Give us something else to work with besides desperation and grit and pain.
Which character – as performed by Christian Rummel – was your favorite?
Since we spent the most time with Huxley I'll go with that. Even then, Christian did a great job alternating between Huxley's inner monologue and spoken dialog: an impressive feat.
Could you see Wolves being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
Certainly, it could even be quite good. I'd cast Norman Reedus as Huxley.
Any additional comments?
I made it all the way through, but it was a struggle. If you're looking for a fairly one-dimensional story that runs on pain, desperation, blood, and testosterone, you might enjoy this. I did not.

Historia
Critically acclaimed author Alastair Reynolds holds a well-deserved place “among the leaders of the hard-science space opera renaissance." ( Publishers Weekly). In Blue Remembered Earth, Geoffrey Akinya wants nothing more than to study the elephants of the Amboseli basin. But when his space-explorer grandmother dies, secrets come to light and Geoffrey is dispatched to the Moon to protect the family name - and prevent an impending catastrophe.

Kobna never disappoints!
Revisado: 07-05-16
If you could sum up Blue Remembered Earth in three words, what would they be?
Thoughtful, interesting, and speculative.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Eunice, I suppose, in all her iterations. She gets and keeps our protagonists moving.
Which character – as performed by Kobna Holdbrook-Smith – was your favorite?
Eunice, I think, though I really enjoyed his characterization of the cousins as well, Lucas and Hector.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Taking breaks was nice, mainly because of the length of the book and amount of detail. I never got bored with it, though.
Any additional comments?
This is the first time I bought an audiobook because of the narrator, primarily. After Kobna's work on the Peter Grant series, I thought I would check out some other stories he had narrated, but there aren't many. Blue Remembered Earth sounded up my alley, though, so I took a shot and really enjoyed it. Unfortunately Kobna doesn't narrate the sequels so I am unsure if I will continue; thankfully the book was satisfying as a stand-alone, even if I do want to find out what happens next.
