Really, that's it. If you haven't already read it, read it. If you're not sure, find an adaptation to watch. Any of them will give you a decent idea of the story. Don't worry, it's worth it. But if you want the the best listening experience of it, you couldn't do better.

I am only just now discovering Shirley Jackson. I loved the movie with Julie Christie and Claire Bloom and finally decided to understand the source material and was not disappointed. Now with this unknown to me story, I find more to love from this extraordinary writer. It's not loud or splashy. Just a thoughtful little story. But gripping and emersive. I had no expectations. Maybe that's the best way to approach her books. Just let them wash over you and let them happen.

Any fan of the 1960 film Village of the Damned will enjoy this book. The film is an excellent adaptation but of course could only skim the surface of the philosophical, political and sociological exposition and discussions given full voice in its source material. A cracking good story that also makes you think. A true treat! And as always, Stephen Fry's reading is flawless.

If you love these stories, or just good stories. If you've read them an hundred times, or only seen the films. This collection of tales and the voices who bring them to life is well worth it. Is it perfect? What is? I'll leave it the listener to decide when it isn't. Some reviews are critical of elements that didn't bother me at all, and I fully agree with others. But I don't think you'll find a better whole of this collection anywhere.

Oh woe thy name is Silkstone

Firstly let me say that so far, this series is excellent, with a wonderful narrator. My only true criticism is the unrelenting woe. Dr. Silkstone makes a sympathetic, likeable and worthy protagonist. However he is afforded only the very briefest moments of triumph and the merest glimpse of future potential happiness before he is, once again, plunged into the depths of trials and suffering and the machinations of evil doers. I think I will have to intersperse more lighthearted stories between the final books of this series to rest my weary heart. There better be an unequivocally happy ending for the good doctor.

Performances of many are ridiculously overwrought, even if one excuses those not using English accents.
