Hella financial privilege
Revisado: 02-15-24
I've read this book many times over the years, and time was I would have called it a favorite... but after reading again (6th time or so) it's distracting how unrealistic this would be for characters less well off. Almost as if it is saying that this type of life is more important and worthy of examination. hmm. A lot of the story is still enjoyable, just this thought is in the background.

Historia
For years, rumors of the "Marsh Girl" have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand.

insufferable
Revisado: 01-12-24
I am tired of hearing about the plight of poor whites during the time of more overt racism. the reader is expected to sympathize with the young white protagonist as grown black people call her Miss and she them by first name. A regretful purchase

Overwhelmingly white
Revisado: 09-20-23
My goodness... the characters in this story are so white, almost painfully so. There is only one person of color involved ever, peripherally. He is "the black man".
Besides that, goodness the main character and her daughter are whiny as all get out, and I don't care for the way this reader performs children-- it's creepy.
Glad I got this on sale.

An Important Story, Yes...
Revisado: 09-15-23
I kind of wish the author had had a more experienced writer help to write this story. Yes, this is an important story for the LGBTQ+ community as well as the black community, but I think too much jargon/ slang is used.

Historia
In this valuable and revealing anthology, cultural critic and best-selling author Roxane Gay collects original and previously published pieces that address what it means to live in a world where women have to measure the harassment, violence, and aggression they face, and where they are "routinely second-guessed, blown off, discredited, denigrated, besmirched, belittled, patronized, mocked, shamed, gaslit, insulted, bullied" for speaking out. Contributions include essays from established and up-and-coming writers, performers, and critics.

Not bad
Revisado: 08-28-23
I guess these characters are realistic, but their conservatism is sometimes as jarring to listen to as the narrator's voice for the lead character's husband.
Glad I got this one on sale, though I would recommend listening to it. It's a pleasant enough narrative, and I genuinely got hooked. I don't think it's transcendent, but this was certainly worth my time.

Historia
David Quammen's book, The Song of the Dodo, is a brilliant, stirring work, breathtaking in its scope, far-reaching in its message - a crucial book in precarious times, which radically alters the way in which we understand the natural world and our place in that world. It's also a book full of entertainment and wonders. In The Song of the Dodo, we follow Quammen's keen intellect through the ideas, theories, and experiments of prominent naturalists of the last two centuries.

An incredible book
Revisado: 04-29-23
The scope of this book was breathtakingly vast, and I'm very pleased to have bought it and listened. It's true that the literal answer of why the dodo is gone is quite short, and if that's all you wanted in a book you'll be disappointed. But this book is about more than the extinction of one animal. I hope things like this are widely read/ experienced
